There are new faces, strange ports to visit, adverse weather and seas to contend with, and always in the air. knowledge that current events can quickly involve us in crises of national and international significance. MED 5-82 was no different. . . H When JULIUS A FURER left Charleston on 8 June, we were as well-prepared as a ship can De. ana ,t paid off as we were challenged again and again to apply our skill, professionalism and determination. Within days of leaving home, we were sent at high speed to the waters off Lebanon in response to a developing crisis there. We saw the first of innumerable schedule changes which enabled you. as part of the U S Sixth Fleet to support the Multinational Force in Beirut, escort the evacuation of the PLO from Lebanon and participate in two major NATO exercises - DAILY DOUBLE and DISPLAY DETERMINATION. Operating first as part of the FORRESTAL carrier battle group and then with the INDEPENDENCE, high tempo operations, day and night underway replenishments, high weapons alert states and constant drills became a way of life for us. Despite a list of cancelled port visits longer than the list of those we did see, you were able to experience a variety of countries from one end of the Mediterranean to the other. Your performance ashore as ambassadors of your ship, the Navy and your country was flawless and was recognized numerous times by higher authority. rABrM « , nr Throughout a cruise characterized by long periods at sea. you maintained high morale, a respect tor one another and your enthusiasm for every task. It is the hallmark of this crew and it marks you as part of a ship with ' class ' . I have watched you grow as individuals and as a team. Your professional skills, personal accomplishments and ability to meet every challenge with enthusiasm, confidence and humor are a source of constant pride to me, as I ' m sure they are to you. As the deployment ends. I want to express on behalf of your friends, family and country, our thanks for a job well done. You are a superb group of men. and I feel privileged to have commanded you.
