Civilization has progressed from age to age until 1958, the International Geophysical Year and the beginning of the Space Era. Now, man is finally able to lift his thoughts from the familiar world around him and con- centrate upon the vast universe. In this fast moving period which brings with it new discoveries and dangers never before evident, none of us is sure of what lies ahead. However, through the hopes and the efforts of many, we have the opportunity to solve the mysteries of science and life. This new age presents a mo.re united mankind and a shared desire that peace may soon reign over our world, too long stained by material differences and scarred by war. In Julia Richman, we the class of 1958 are contemplating entrance into a new environment. No longer will we be protected, sheltered, and guided. We must take on our own individual responsibilities as we embark on new and unforeseen adventures in college, the business world, and marriage. We are self confident though, because we have been preparing for this time ever since we entered Julia Richman several years ago. We are now able to appreciate our high school training in the humanities, the arts, and sciences. This knowledge of the past has given us a better understanding of the present and the ability to cope with the problems of the future. Our hearts are filled with gratitude toward our teachers and parents who have opened the door to our brave new world. 4 5. My dear Girls: rf 5'-f hh! M, A K st LKLL I '- In the opera HLohengrin one of the lovely arias is the farewell song, wllhe Swan Song . This message to you is my 'LSwan Songn, and in it I wish I could express adequately how privileged I feel to have had seventeen years of association with Julia Richman High School--a school whose stand- ards and ideals have remained high during the forty-five years of its existence, whose faculty has been devoted and progressive, and whose student body has come to respect, to understand and to support the lofty principles of the founders of the school - Dr. Wolfson and Dr. Lucey. To be alive means constant change and growth-physically, mentally, spiritually and socially. One may die in the last three areas long before physical death occurs. You are living in the most challenging and the most dangerous era that the world has ever known. lVlan's conquest of the secrets of the universe is only dimly understood by most of us. We do know that we have it in our power to destroy all the nations of the earth and all the civilization devel- oped slowly and with infinite pains during the past six thousand years. Therefore, we have tried to develop and to harden the determination of each one of you to inform yourself thoroughly, to interpret wisely, and to apply with moral and social purpose the information and the knowledge that your intellectual capacity has enabled you to acquire. My heartfelt wish for each one of you is that you may help to bring about the better world for which we yearn-a world in which our efforts are directed not to destruction, but to construction, a world of peace of which it may be said: Bliss was it that dawn to be alive And to be young was very heaven. Affectionately and sincerely, Marion D. Jewell Principal 1941-1958 My dear Girls: It is now the year 1958. Each one of you is barely eighteen years of age. According to the authorities who have made a study of the in- creasing longevity of each genera- tion, each of you should have fifty, sixty, or even more years of life before you. You may see the years 2008-2018 come into being. What are you going to do with these many years, years which will bring you into the Twenty-first Century? How are you planning to live them? How will you make them happy, fruitful years? What will the world of the Twenty-first Century be like, the world which your generation will do much to shape? Will it be a world of Peace, of Love of onels Fellow-Man, of Plenty and Freedom for all? Or will it be a world of War, of Hatreds, of Slavery and Diminished Resources? L We fervently hope that it will be a better world. It can be if, in the next fifty years, you and all young people like you dedicate yourselves to this challenging task. But I am only one personf, you may say. ul-low can l do anything to change the world? You would be surprised to know how very strong the influence of individuals can be if enough individuals are deter- mined to see ideals become realities. Your influence as a thinker, as an unselfish member of society, or as a considerate person will be felt. Every kind word you utter and every noble deed you do will reach out to others. What we do and what we say may be compared, in effect, to what happens when we throw a stone into a river. We see the first strong impulses, and radiating from it are countless, ever-widening circles. So it is with everything we do. We generate countless, ever-widening influences daily. The Twentieth Century will reflect these in toto. May your contributions be such that the new century will see the dawn of Peace, Understanding and genuine Brotherly Love among all Mankind. Sincerely yours, Mrs. Mary C. Buda Principal fix -.. ,175 peg. Ls' -QIIQ' ,lf I ,fi-5' x . Maman r.f.us1'f.n-I F e M uh 5 I N EE. 52. S H' -TUNE Mmm. N Cr QEDICA T I UN The year 1958 is of great historic importance nationally, internationally, and universally. Therefore, the yearbook staff has turned its thoughts to the world around us. lt is for this reason that we dedicate our 1958 6'Spotlight to Lee Han Chul, Julia Richmarfs adopted orphan. This small boy was chosen above all the important political and scientific per- sonalities of our time. We feel about him as we do because, to us, he symbolizes the hope and faith in mankind that has been all but erased from the earth in recent years. During the first years of his life, Lee Han Chul lived with a war that uprooted him from his home, took his parents, and left him alone in a world of hate and vio- lence. He had the strength to continue to live as a normal boy who is well liked by his classmates and participates wholeheartedly in activities from school to sports. We feel that Lee Han Chul is the fitting symbol for our dedication because after all the sorrow and pain he was exposed to, he has no resentment. Instead, he wishes to become a physician, a healer of the sick, prolonger of life, helper of humanity. Though Lee Han Chul is still very young, he possesses a courage of which few can boast. We in this land of opportunity should take this chance to look critically at ourselves. In the midst of our peace and prosperity how many of us have ever mani- fested such love of fellow man? In all probability, no one in this graduating class will meet Lee Han Chul or remember his name in five years. However, today the entire '6Spotlight staff sends sincere hopes that he will attain his goal and that the rest of his life will compensate, in some small way, for the years of suffering he has endured and the happiness of which he has been deprived. They had a personal interest in each and every girl. They felt miserable when We failed a subject, or elated when we achieved high grades. They have seen us mature from the shyness of freshmen to the sureness of seniors. They have pushed and prodded us so that we are able to prepare ourselves for the vast change that lies ahead. It is therefore, with deep gratitude and fondness, that we, the graduating class of 1958, say farewell to our senior section teachers. fi xg .y oc o M , 5 It If X J! ' t fiff! We shall also take with us memories, friends, and a better understanding of people which are just as valuable as the lessons we've learned from books. We have made friends here who have seen us grow up from bewildered Freshmen to sophisticated Seniors-friends with whom welve shared disappointments and failures, and many friends with whom we've shared happiness and success. Many of these girls we may never see again. Others we may meet in college or the business world. We'll remember how the same girl who wore bobby socks and a crew-neck sweater was a picture of elegance in her formal at the Prom. The excitement of Red Letter Day, the tears at graduation are just some of the fond remembrances We shall have of our days at Julia Richman. Besides these memories we shall have the great honor of being the first class to be gaduated with our new principal, Mrs. Buda. We would like to remain and see Julia Richman undergo the changes Mrs. Buda has in mind for it. But l,m sure sheall understand that the world is awaiting our arrival. As president of our class l'd like to wish you luck and happiness in whatever you undertake. Here's hoping our paths often cross. We have been so well protected, Cloistered, pampered, and subjected To a gossamer dream of life, which, Now as graduates, we've outgrown, So that now, beneath the happy smile We're all wearing, as we file Through the doors that formed our haven During these four happy years, We wonder just how much we'll give This tempest world in which we live, This changing World of satellites And war with words, and nations' fears. And now, before this world we stand Holding Youth in steady hand, Looking hack, yet marching forward To an unknown, brave, new world.
