His advance has been steady and continuous, and we can all gain valuable knowledge and genuine inspiration from the study of his progress. No achievement is comparable, however. to manis discovery of fire. With this discovery he had at last attained what had been considered impossible. Man had finally conquered the darkness and was now able to bring light into the obscure night. In this, the 1957 uSpotlight , we have concerned ourselves with the idea that life is a combination of light moments, dark moments and gray moments. Here at Julia Richman we have experienced all of these. Most important in connection with this theme is the role of our faculty who have helped us to discover the light of knowledge. And, as the man of old who used fire for fuel, heating and lighting, thus conquering the darkness of ignorance, so shall we now use this light of knowledge to conquer the obscure unknown and brighten the world of tomorrow. The light moments of life are many and at Richman our days have been greatly brightened by the various school activities and clubs. However, all our days will not be sunny ones and dark moments will also be in store for us. In the midst of these, though, we will be able to smile optimistically and shrug ofi any fears, for along with what we learned from books, we learned another very important lesson . . . that following the tempestuous storm will be the smile of a radiant sun. Jewell. Miss Jewell has made many innovations during her years as principal of Julia Richman. We are especially proud of the Nursery School that was instituted by her. She has guided our school with kindness, foresight and understanding. For this we will be forever grateful. Like us, Miss Jewell stands on the threshold of a new phase of her life. She will spend the years ahead enjoying her many interests. She is an avid opera enthusiast, and loves to read and play the piano. She has traveled extensively and no doubt the future will find her enjoying many a trip, sailing across the seven seas. As we look back on our life here at Julia Richman, we wish to express our appreciation to Miss Jewell for the privileges that have been ours, especially the privilege of freely and thoughtfully developing the best of ourselves, so that we may be worthy members of society. Our sincerest thanks go to Miss Jewell for her willing cooperation and her readiness to help us all. We wish her Cod speed and many, many years of happiness in her retirement. ' kwin- -! -1:15, My dear Girls, There is a beautiful Italian word, uchiaroscuron, derived from two Latin words-clarus fclearj and obscurus fobscure or coveredj. lt is defined as the distribution or the blending of the lights and shades in a picture , and it is the descriptive term of the 'cart of representing light in shadow and shadow in light so that the parts represented in shadow shall still have the clearness and warmth of those in light, and those in light the depth and soft- ness of those in shadowv. Applied to literature and to literary criticism, it emphasizes the contrasts that point up the values that the writer and the critic desire to emphasize. A sun dial bears the legend, MI count only the sunny hoursn, but in our lives we must count the shadowed hours as well, since everyone of us, inevit- ably, will have both. One of the major objectives of education is to give the individual as wide experience as possible in the innumerable areas for living in which a human being can and must function. These areas include the physical and mental activities, the economic, political and social fields, the spiritual and family relationships-to mention only a few. The purpose of this objective of education is to enable the individual to meet the challenges of his own age and the circumstances he must face. Education, then, does give us the power to evaluate our talents and abilities with reference to the demands made upon them. Education does give us the training to see the clearness and warmth in the parts of our lives that are in light, and the depth and softness of those in shadow. Education does help us to see that the sunny hours are enhanced in value by the contrast with the shadowed ones, and the shadowed and sorrowful hours are lightened by the knowledge that there will be sunny hours, too. '4Sweet are the uses of adversity Which, like a toad, ugly and venomous, Wears yet a precious jewel in his headf, May you have many happy, sunny hours. May you face the dark ones with courage and the certainty that they, too, will add strength and depth to living and increase your understanding and appreciation of the beautiful and the good. At the time, knowledge to me was only precise and classified information gathered from various books and instructions. But now, knowledge signifies much more than this, it is understanding and insight that comes not just from reading books but from experience ,... our own and others. As we depart from Julia Richman, we will take with us not only the knowledge that we have gained here. but also the unforgettable memories of happy events. As we look towards the future we see a world filled with hope, a world of many people, all striving for peace, understanding and knowledge of each others customs and traditions. As we look back over these years we realize that our section teachers have been second mothers to us. They have watched us grow from timid freshmen to the young women we are now. They have tried to guide us out of the shadows and lighten the path which leads to success. It is with much gratitude and love that we, the members of the graduating class of 1957, bid adieu to our senior section teachers. 15 In the beginning there was strangeness, vastness, coldness. We entered the building slowly, Knowing nobody, Wfondering if we ever would know anybody. Then the weeks, the months glided swiftly by, And somehow The strangeness was familiar, The vastness was diminished, The coldness was no more. We became one, All part of this small city within the city. We greeted people in passing. They greeted us. Yve belonged. Years slipped past without our really noticing them, We were too busy growing up. We were occupied with clubs and projects And the serious business of learning. We wound our way upward through those years, And finally we reached the top, the pinnacle. And now we are leaving. Yet, it is not an ending, It is a beginning, the start ofa whole new life. But these feelings soon faded as fear took their place, And I gazed at some old, but many a new face. Never knew a school to exist without a male, If only we could attend Columbia, Harvard or Yale. As a junior I got to know each intricate path, Leading easily to gym -------- regretfully not to math. Learning Palestin without the Mew, and Jewell with a double HIM, Had me in a state of confusion, until I learned to spell. Then in fifty-seven we added Greenwich Village scenery, Down, down, down we filed, to our temporary beanery. Now I go forth no more an uneducated fool, As a graduate, I proudly bear the key of my school. ,Ioni Goldner 90 A.. .., fl ss 7 U ,- 'Y L W' -.A .K 1, ., B 1 Cc- fn i r,1 4 M, I','f',, 52. , ' 1, ,,- I? Much brightness and sparkle have been added to our lives here at Julia Richman through the G.O. and its many activities. In the midst of a busy Week in which a senioris life is drowned in the dark mysterious depths of physics and chemistry. the GO. enables us to enjoy many light moments. The chief function of our G.O. is in supporting the activities of the school. Heads of all the school clubs and societies submit a budget to the GO., which is discussed and perhaps revised at a budget meeting. Lucky charms are held tightly and fingers are kept crossed, for the student leaders realize that financially their clubs are dependent upon the G.O. Also connected with the C.O. is thc C.O. Store, which sells school sup- plies to the students at reduced prices. The C.O. has brought fun and frolic to us by sponsoring these varied activities, which have so greatly brightened our school days. MRS. REBECCA nous The Cooperative School of Julia Richman mourns the loss of our beloved teacher and dear friend, Mrs. Rebecca Polis. We are proud that for almost twenty-five years she chose to teach the Cooperatives, and to give us the benefit of her broad knowledge, her deep understanding, her lively spirit and her warm, loving nature. Mrs. Polis taught us with kindness and humor, by her examples as well as by her words. We will not soon forget the lessons we have learned from her, not only in the facts and interpretation of history, but even more in the meaning of democracy, love of country, sympathy and tolerance for others, and better relations with our fellow men. Her passing is indeed a heavy blow to us. We share the sorrow of her family, for we, too, have been her children. We know, however, that for them, as for us, she will live on in our loving memories, and in the ideals and standards she has set for us. 8XlA, 8X1B, 8X2A, 8X2B Words of Elnlz' btenment I would like to leave all of you, love that binds man to man, joy in all the good and simple things and excitement in discovering something new. May you always have this effect on others. Dr. Maxim Newmark I am sure the Stenography, the 019566 Practice, and the Typewriting that you learned at Julia Richman will bring you a satisfactory job, fortune and perhaps even romance!
