-r we 35 C9719 Show must Q0 C911 Life with Father was a play which broke all Broadway records for its long rung Life at julia Richman High School is a performance with an even longer record. Each season brings changes in the cast, shifts of scenery, and minor modification of the script, but the drama is the same. The action has included both comedy and tragedy. Perhaps our parents would tell us we don't even know the meaning of the word tragedy, but that time we failed the mid-term test or became involved in a minor altercation with one of our teachers fwho, we now realize, was unbelievably patientj it seemed as if life wasn't worth living any longer. Then would come the pleasures, and no longer would life seem so black. Each of our classes, with its, many humorous incidents, has been a study in human comedy. The Music Festival, the Water Ballet, the Assembly programs, the Country Fair, and, most important of all, Red Letter Day are episodes which have contributed to our enjoyment of school. ' However, though our school days have been pleasant, in many respects our lives until now have been little more than dress rehearsals to get us ready for the future. We are about to make our formal entrances into the world. Some, with Great Expectations, will go on to college. Here are the future teachers, scientists, and authors. There are probably some who have as their goal a life in politics. QPerhaps the first woman President will come from this January, 1949, graduat- ing class.j Not all will continue with their formal education. Many will go on to gain actual experience as career women. These are bud- ding oflice managers, private secretaries, buyers, and maybe some com- pany heads. A few will soon assume the part that most of us hope for eventually-that of homemaker and wife. Until now, we have been guided in all our actions by our parents and teachers. It has been only by their patient efforts, tirelessly leading us on, that we have learned our parts and, we sincerely hope, learned them well. We shall miss the Firm guidance of these competent direc- tors. It may be hard at first to take the initiative and carry on alone. But We shall be able to do it because of the training we have had to help us attain the goal of Julia Richman High School: to become healthy, intelligent, economically able, social minded, charming and idealistic. We hold no illusions as to what the future holds for usp we know that to reach stardom in life will take hard and serious work, and that we must be always willing to accept the promptings of those wiser and more experienced than we. One thing we shall remember, no matter what part we shall play in this drama of life and that is . . . the show must go on. 3

'Ki' 'H cg ear Qtr 5, The concept of life as a stage is one that has always fascinated poets and dramatists. You remember Shakespeare's famous lines: All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts. So, julia Richman, too, is a stage, and all of you are merely players. You, too, have had your entrances and your exits, and during your four years in these halls you have been called upon to play many parts-from the small walk-on part, to bit parts, and finally in your senior year- Shakespeare's seventh age -to the coveted role of leading lady. School is the microcosmic stage-the universal stage in miniature- upon which we teachers try to give you experience and training in the many parts you will be called upon to play on the world stage to which you will be graduated from julia Richman. Trained intelligence that enables you to analyze problems and to bring extensive information in numerous fields and knowledge of the past to their solution, good judgment in selecting from your store of knowledge those materials that are important for solving the particular problems with which you are facedg practice in working with others- parents, neighbors, teachers, classmates-who differ in race, religion, political beliefs and economic status, a sense of justice and fair play that compels you to respect the rights and privileges of others, and to adjust your own desires to the common welfareg above all, integrity in all personal and social relationships .... These are the lessons that an apprentice in the world of the theatre must learn, because only by team- work can the play be presented-only by the work of the director, stage- hands, and minor players, can the leading lady play her part. These are the lessons that we in julia Richman. have tried to teach you, knowing that if we have done our part we can send you forth to the larger stage with the assurance that you will do your part successfully in whatever role you may be cast. Our affectionate good wishes for good parts, and increasingly im- portant ones, go with you. Sincerely yours, E
