My Dear Girls, The Spotlight of Tomorrow will be turned, inevitably, upon your gener- ation because the girls and boys of your age are the ones who will have to make the major contributions in talent, in hard work, and in sacrifice, to build the better world for which your brothers and sweethearts on the military front, and you on the home front, are now fighting. I think that the greatest task that faces you is the acceptance of your obligation to be well informed on the problems of reconstruction following the war, which we know now will tax the best efforts of the most able and conscientious statesmeng to make that information function in developing your judgment, your power of discrimination and your ability to evaluate events and human beings, to help through constructive organizations- political, social and economic-to mould a public opinion that will make cooperation with other nations the cornerstone of national policy, that will test all proposed solutions of world problems by the standards of justice and humanity, recognizing that such standards, applied to international affairs, will ultimately serve also desirable national interests, community interests and personal interests. Laughter and good times, creative work and play, friendship and affec- tion, spiritual growth and intellectual development, are your American heritage. May you have them in full measure.
