X X j DDC' DD: ... ... M OCKIE li Ockie is all I have in the way of little brothers. However, if the next commodity to be rationed were little brothers, my available supply would more than suffice me for the duration of my life. All the ingredients that go into the production of a well-baked little brother are definitely to he found in Ockie. His recipe reads as follows: Take two black cherries, place them in a small white face, cover liberally with soot-black hair, throw in a chuckle that,s a cross between a high-pitched harmonica and a gurgle, allow to stand for twelve years, and you have Ockie. That is, you have the super- ficial covering of the baddest little hoy, the gladdest little gangster, or the maddest little mischief to he found between Battery Park and the Bronx. You haven't lived until youave traveled on the subway with the little menace. Other people sit quietly awaiting their destination, but not Ockie. Upon entering the car, he takes complete command. He marches to the first train and proceeds to take over an imaginary steering wheel. ln a clear piping voice, oblivious of my embarrassment and the passengers' amused snickers, he calls out stations and blazes trails to 42nd Street that no self-respecting motorman ever thought of attempting. We climb moun- tains, cross rivers, and then breathlessly at Times Square, he reins the iron monster in. Inevitably, I become so engrossed in his game that we often ride past our station wildly whistling and calling HAH aboard. Another facet of Ockieis personality is his clothes closet. He is ex- tremely neat, and row upon row of junk stands in shining array upon his 6

The First Four Years The first four years are the hardest! Four years ago, we arrived breathless with a minimum knowledge of the uThree Us -Cosmetics, Clothing, and Cutting. However, after a strenuous curriculum, we have mastered these rudiments of education only to be confronted with a weekly schedule of some consequence, no steam-Heatless Mondayg no steak- Meatless Tuesdayg no shoes--Feetless Wednesdayg no bus-Seatless Thurs- day, no homework-Featless Friday. Heatless Monday, the weak end of the week-end, gives the seniors the long-awaited opportunity to saunter boldly into the North School Office with coats on. This is done notwithstanding the Persevering Pioneer and the Keeper of the Pass, who sit shivering f'neath the icy blasts of the Arctic Officej. Meatless Tuesday presents a problem of another kind. Biological dis- cussion of animal structure must be momentarily relinquished in behalf of binary fishin,. The cafeteria has a plentiful supply of frozen fish left over from the previous day. The Traffic Squad, ever resourceful, has evolved a revolutionary system whereby marshals examine lunches as they accom- panv the girls through the doors. Difficulties have been encountered and the Black Market is quite profitable, the most illicit agent of which may be reached by tacking a note to the waste paper basket under Mrs. Denson's desk. The password is c'Mary is a grand old name. Feetless Wednesday has given vent to new styles. One girl appeared with a Richman News strapped to one foot, and a Bluebird to the other to avoid partialitv. Seatless Thursday also offers complications to the daily routine. Now, even the girls don,t get seats. Staunchly they stand beside their teachers, who are quite used to standing up against the pungent odor of gasoline and gossip. Featless Friday applies only to lack of scholastic achievement and not to the dizzy developments which follow on this day. On this day, home- work is neglected because the best students of all sleep in the study hall. Yes, the .... shelf. Bits of tinfoil, string, a monopoly game, and other materials neces- sary to my brother's existence are lined up lovingly. His jeep hat, which has to teem with germs before we are allowed to wash it, sits reverently in the place of honor on the tip of the shelf. Ockie's ambitions are, to say the least, unique. Last year his ultimate hope in life was to be a collector of garbageg today, he has succumbed to the charms of the radio announcer, and our ears have suifered accordingly. To put all of Ockie on paper is to pinion an illusive cloud or to cap- ture a butterfly. He is the key to scienceis quest for the secret of perpetual motion. He is an animated Alka Seltzer with a permanent fizz. NATALIE GETTINGER SPOTLIGHT SERENADE There Are Such Things ..rr.r,. . ...................
