ldikilftd C214 664 LOVK If, by chance, you should wander into our modest menage, you would find the object of this story. Katie is the maid-of-all work in our home. For fifteen years she has reigned supreme in the kitchen and, as my mother declares at the mention of her name, a better worker will never be found. She rarely takes days off, and when she does, it is to take a ride in the sub- way, which is the only thing in the world that holds any fascination for her. Although any hour of the day would find Katie looking neat as a pin, her appearance has never failed to startle me. She is so pathetically homely! Her hair gives the appearance of an upside-down mop. Her face is always the color of ripe tomatoes, whether from the heat of summer, or the frost- bite of winter. Because of the unbelievable size of her feet, shoes are the only wear- ing apparel Katie buys. For the rest of her wardrobe she is content to remake, as best she can, my mother's cast-offs. Katie always saves her money. To her, each pay day means a walk to the bank and another entry in her little blue pass book. All these years Katie has kept our apartment spic and span, never com- plaining of the lack of companionship that she suffers. But recently, there has been a strange difference in her attitude. It is no small wonder, for of all things, Katie has fallen in love!! As far as I know he is a little bald man many years Katie's senior. The object of her affections is the man who has stood day after day behind the bank teller's window where Katie has so diligently deposited her money. Here is Katie's story: After having deposited her money one aftemoon, Katie seemed to have difficulty in picking up the packages she had bought before entering the bank. As it was almost closing time, little Henry offered to help Katie carry the bundles home. Thus, a romance began that was to have a great effect on all concerned. Of course, I need not say what disastrous results this romance had on our household. It was a different Katie who cared for us then. Katie began to use cosmetics! The first day I noticed was when I went to her room and there on the dresser lay such feminine apparatus as you would find on the dressing table of a glamour girl. I need not go into any details about the disastrous attempt on the part of Katie to look glamour- ous. On another day, I found her cuddled up in the easy chair in our library reading a book. On closer inspection I saw that the book was The Collected Works of the World's Most Famous Love Letters. Need I say more? who had won the Pulitzer prize for her poem Television at Dusk. While I worried on about the message I knew was bound to come, I noticed two heads close together, a blonde one and a darker one. The blonde was LOUISE DUBIN, New York social worker, whose efforts had created a new school for delinquent children. The black-haired girl was GLORIA LANDSMAN whose sparkling voice had made the new song, Beat Me Grandpa with My Baby Brother, first on the Hit Parade. I was just about to walk overito LOIS HIRTENSTEIN, whose famous defense of her last client had made her the most well-known woman lawyer in America, when I heard a shriek and an arm thrown around my neck. It was MILDRED HARRIS who had just discovered vitamin Q, which was sup- posed to prevent gray hair, insure big muscles, and to cure every illness from A to Z. The same old Millie who had laughed while, shivering with cold, I had paraded down Second Avenue in a gym suit during a fire drill. We were further reminiscing when the waiter told me I was wanted on the phone. I knew what it wasg Jonathan had the measles. Oh, I forgot to tell you, Jon is my two-year-old son, and about the only famous thing I've accomplished. I noticed that Katrina wasn't her usual self. Her hair was unkempt, she no longer took pride in her neat appearance and the house . . . well! What had happened? A lover's quarrel? Then one day, I gathered my courage and asked her what had happened. It seemed that due to her love interest Katie had begun to make herself as attractive as she could with the result that the handyman in the building sat up and took notice, and even was so bold as to ask her for a date. Katie, overwhelmed by this sudden attention on the part of the male species was so unwise as to inform Henry that another man sought her hand. One day he decided to take matters into his own hand and he waited patiently at the servants' entrance of the building for the handyman. Seeing a tall, husky piece of manhood stroll leisurely out of the house, Henry proceeded to hit this man in the stomach for trifling with the affections of his girl. After receiving a nasty black eye and a hit on the head, Henry found out that this was not the handyman. Henry, thoroughly disgusted with himself, took his revenge on Katie and told her that he never wanted to see her again! To make matters worse, the handyman, after leaming the reason for the attack upon him, informed Katie that he was not in the habit of courting other men's girls! Katie was left without a beau. wr 4- Pk Katrina closed the door of the apartment quietly and pulled her coat about her. She felt very strange. She had never wom a red dress before. She had bought this dress because it was for a special occasion that she would never be able to tell anyone about. Katrina put the nickel in the slot and passed through the turnstile. She walked quickly to the far end of the platform where there were few people. She drew the coat about her once more. How fitting, she thought, that she should end her life in the subway, the only thing in the world that fasci- nated her. Hadn't she bought the dress and shoes just for that reason? Suddenly she heard the rumble of the train as it sped on to the station. Now was her chance .... Just jump in front of the train. It was easy. Look at the gleam of the tracks! Look at the gleam of the tracks! Katrina was still. Her hands no longer held the coat. What!! Kill herself for a man? Never! There were other ways of regaining a lost love. Why, she had her entire life before her! Quickly, Katrina fled out of the station, just a red streak in the wind. wk nr wk As I write this, Katrina is contemplating her next move in making Henry get down to facts. Everyone in my family feels that he had better hurry so that Katie can settle down once more to the same sensible person that she was before she lost her heart. SHIRLEE STICH 22
