February 1942: Dear Diary, It's all over! I am now a graduate of high school in accordance with all the laws of the Board of Education. I graduated from a school that taught me how to work and play, how to make friends, how to take the bitter with the sweet, how to be socially-minded, and charming and how to become the modern girl graduate. My high school days are over, and I am to begin a new life, a life I am afraid that won't hold as many pleasant hours for me as my high school days did. So dear diary, this ends another chapter in the life of one of the class of January 1942. but the real thing. He's ideal. He's still in high school, but that's only because he plays football and they are keeping him in school because the team needs his playing so badly. Imagine, me, with a football quarterback! December 1940: Dear Diary, Mark me down as the original man hater! Went up to Howard's school today to watch the team play. I was going to surprise him by attending the game. He's not even on the team . . . they never heard of him . . . not even the water boy knows him!! Am I mortified! When I think of all those stories he told me . . . and I believed them. Oh, these men, I guess they are all alike! From now on, I am going to devote all of my time to school. At least school books tell the truth! Q I hopelj February 1941: Dear Diary, My, goodness! I have arrived-I am a Senior! That is to say I'm in the seventh term. I really canit tell why they call seventh-termers 'LSeniors. The only privileges they have with the eighth-termers is the privilege of the zero period class-not to forget the ten-thirty lunch period! By the way, have met a new fellow! This time I'm sure it's the real thing-no more pseudo-football quarterback for me! Now, it's college men or hands off! He's tall, dark and has the cutest nose I have ever seen. Though I can think of several girls including myself who would appreciate such a blessing more than he does. October 1941 : Dear Diary, This business of being a senior is wonder- ful! I never realized how much school meant to me until now. Why, look at all of the friends I've made-Ann, Elayne, Mildred, and Shirlee, just by working with them all day long. When I was a newcomer to Julia Richman I thought I would never come to know any of the teachers, moreover like any of them. I think some of the best friends and advisers I have are the teachers who have taught me for the past three years. You know, it's funny the way your ideas can change over a period of time. My, goodness! Aren't young children silly? December 1941: Dear Diary, The time is getting nearer and nearer to graduation, and I'm scared, and more than a wee bit sorry to leave the dear old school. I've gotten my service award pin. The Stuyvesant-Julia Richman dance has been held, and Red Letter Day is coming upon us rather quickly. My days are filled with events, each one carrying their special message, letting me know in their own way my days are numbered. Soon, I will be one of the Class of January 1942. THI HS lll llll To the tinkle of glasses mingled with low, subdued voices and sparkling laughter, I walked into the crowded hotel room. I nervously straightened my hat and silently prayed I wouldn't be called away from this reunion. The memory of all the many other calls that had interrupted me at other times sent chills down my back. I walked over to the large U-shaped table and my mouth opened with amazement. These sleek, sophisticated women couldn't possibly be the same girls who had madly whipped around school, plaid skirts swaying to meet high red socks and hair blowing away from large, bright bows. I felt a light tap on my shoulder and a well-modulated voice said, Hello Ann. I whirled around and the-years rolled back to a busy pub oiiice and this girl arranging a dummy for the News. nono'rHv WEBER, I gasped. Somewhere I remembered seeing a picture of this woman and then I recalled that she was the editor of the new scientific magazine Vita-health. Behind her stood SUE MOSKOWITZ who was now writing for that ultraswank publication Sophisticate. Two women walked in together and I heard a voice gaily saying, Hello Gladys, hello Jean. The short dark woman, GLADYS HARSCH, was now head of Senior Ac- tivities at Julia Richman and JEAN DUKOFF was principal of a new school. A sudden pealing of phone awoke the old feeling of fear inside of me. Here it was at last. This afternoon couldn't be diiferent, but the waiter walked right past me toward a group of three women. When they tumed around I recognized them immediately as the editors of that smart magazine, New York's woman's only guide toward dressing, Glamorous Alluref' They were FRANCINE JACOBY, FAITH RESNIKOFF and SHIRLEE STICH. I also recognized them as the three demons whose remit slips for stories I had sent them decorated my room after I had been graduated from college. Today every woman from sales girl to heiress swore by their magazine. It was they who had created the glass hats everybody was wearing. I picked up the book of poetry I had with me and casually glanced at the picture on the back cover, then I looked up at the girl standing in front of me and I knew she was the same ELEANOR MARTIN who had written the book I had been reading. This was the famous poetess, Miss E. Martin, U s I .f his I 6524345 tj fm it ts L Q TX X0 'u fltb we .9 Qty l SJ EJ
