but the real thing. He's ideal. He's still in high school, but that's only because he plays football and they are keeping him in school because the team needs his playing so badly. Imagine, me, with a football quarterback! December 1940: Dear Diary, Mark me down as the original man hater! Went up to Howard's school today to watch the team play. I was going to surprise him by attending the game. He's not even on the team . . . they never heard of him . . . not even the water boy knows him!! Am I mortified! When I think of all those stories he told me . . . and I believed them. Oh, these men, I guess they are all alike! From now on, I am going to devote all of my time to school. At least school books tell the truth! Q I hopelj February 1941: Dear Diary, My, goodness! I have arrived-I am a Senior! That is to say I'm in the seventh term. I really canit tell why they call seventh-termers 'LSeniors. The only privileges they have with the eighth-termers is the privilege of the zero period class-not to forget the ten-thirty lunch period! By the way, have met a new fellow! This time I'm sure it's the real thing-no more pseudo-football quarterback for me! Now, it's college men or hands off! He's tall, dark and has the cutest nose I have ever seen. Though I can think of several girls including myself who would appreciate such a blessing more than he does. October 1941 : Dear Diary, This business of being a senior is wonder- ful! I never realized how much school meant to me until now. Why, look at all of the friends I've made-Ann, Elayne, Mildred, and Shirlee, just by working with them all day long. When I was a newcomer to Julia Richman I thought I would never come to know any of the teachers, moreover like any of them. I think some of the best friends and advisers I have are the teachers who have taught me for the past three years. You know, it's funny the way your ideas can change over a period of time. My, goodness! Aren't young children silly? December 1941: Dear Diary, The time is getting nearer and nearer to graduation, and I'm scared, and more than a wee bit sorry to leave the dear old school. I've gotten my service award pin. The Stuyvesant-Julia Richman dance has been held, and Red Letter Day is coming upon us rather quickly. My days are filled with events, each one carrying their special message, letting me know in their own way my days are numbered. Soon, I will be one of the Class of January 1942. Q, I IIEAII IIIAIIY January 1939: Dear Diary, Today was my first day in High School. !: -p It's such a big school and nothing like Junior High. I have so many teachers ig I don't think I'll be able to remember any of their names and they certainly ' won't be able to know me very well with so many girls in all of their classes. I Can't find my way around the school too well and all of those ultra-sophisti- cated seniors seem to take a special delight in misdirecting me. I wonder how they can tell I'm new in the school-just because I don't wear lipstick! When I'm a senior I shall be much nicer to the new girls. That is if I ever get to be a senior! June 1939: Dear Diary, My first term of high school is finished. I am now a full-fledged Richmanite.', It's a wonderful feeling to know that I belong. The only trouble is that it seems so long until I become an upper ' classman. Just think-five more terms of taking mid-terms, gym, and , ' passing Regents. Vlfhy, I'll be ancient when I get out of school! I wish the f f 'Y time would hurry up and come, but there is nothing I can do about it. A11 I 'I things come to those who wait! Il' November 1939: Dear Diary, Two more months and I shall be a .X junior. Not that the time passed very quickly. It didn't! It seems that the If 1 routine is the same every single day. No wonder the seniors look so worn, A and have rings under their eyes all the time. At first I thought it was from f dissipation, but it's probably because they have been in high school for so many years. I ,I June 1940: Dear Diary, What a busy month! First, the journalism f j. I banquet. Not that I like to boast or anything, I was made a columnist on the 4'News right off the hatf' Fresh out of the journalism class and already ' i I'm a member of the fourth estate. It must be in my blood! But, with the A good comes the bad. I took my first regents this month-in geometry. The 1 QNX subject should speak for itself! I passed the regents, of course, but the I! mf mark! I always said it was a silly subject, and I certainly don't imagine j 5:5 editors of papers use geometry to dummy the paper-so it really doesn't I matter any way. October 1940: Dear Diary, I met Howard today. For the first time in my life, I'm in love. Not any of these silly school girl crushes this time- it 11:1 1 4, I 1 5 - , T r x .i - - ,. February 1942: Dear Diary, It's all over! I am now a graduate of high school in accordance with all the laws of the Board of Education. I graduated from a school that taught me how to work and play, how to make friends, how to take the bitter with the sweet, how to be socially-minded, and charming and how to become the modern girl graduate. My high school days are over, and I am to begin a new life, a life I am afraid that won't hold as many pleasant hours for me as my high school days did. So dear diary, this ends another chapter in the life of one of the class of January 1942.
