They are the editors, the copy, and the theme. Why then has another focal point been chosen? Stop for a moment and consider. You and you and you are seniors. That's fine but you can't be put in a pigeon-hole and left there. Each one of you is an individual personality. Each one of you has some tal- ent, some special ability to do one thing particularly well. It is this talent that makes you different from the next senior and makes the next senior different from you. Talent then has to be an intrinsic part of the Yearbook. c'But I have no talentf' you are saying. True you may not be talented in art, or music, or Writing, but there are other talents. Some are far greater and more useful than these. For instance, look about your house when you go home tonight. See if the rooms are in order and notice the dinner. Doesn7t someone in your family have a talent for making a home? ls it your mother, perhaps? Then again your talent may not as yet be discovered. Thomas Hardy was nearly fifty before he started writing. Just the other day I read of an old Woman, the operator of a news stand in Wall Street for ten years, who has recently tried her hand at sculpture. This old woman,s work has been seen by experts and is called excellent. She, at last, has discovered her talent. But for all our talents, discovered or not, there should be one rule. They should be used and developed. There is no more pitiful sight than that of a great talent Wasted or permitted to lie fallow and decay. Whether you have special ability in science or Writing, in languages or dancing, put it into practice. Remember, only you have been given this special power to do this one thing Well. Above everything else, put your talent to work and use it for some good purpose. Wfar and rumors of war! That seems to be the keynote of the busy world in which many of you are about to take an active part. However, in this country of ours the daily life of men, women and children goes on much the same as yesterday. Most of us will not be called onto play heroic, spectacular roles, but rather the quieter ones of routine duty. VVe here in Julia Richman greet you, the members of our family who are leaving us, and hope that the ideals of living which all of you have been taught and the skills of earning a living which those of you who are about to seek work have labored to acquire, may make your lives happier, more gracious and more useful. I A 1 Principal A Weary cobbler runs his hands lovingly over his work-a sigh of satisfaction escapes his lips. A slight sculptor gazes appraisingly at his marble statue-a warm glow lightens his sensitive features. A sturdy gardener wipes his brow and straight- ens his back-his fingers caress a colored petal. lnto the lives of all these people came the desire to create, to look upon something completed and feel that they, not a helper nor a friend, have made something of value-be it boots, statues or-a flower. Realizing that many girls of Julia Richman High School possess this creative ability, the Art Department stands ever ready to offer its courses in such engrossing fields as Art Appreciation which gives one the opportunity to develop different forms of expression, General Design which enables one to gain a rigid foundation, and Elective Art composed of a variety of branches such as Commercial Illustration, and Costume Design which furnish one with the adequate means in which to specialize. Just as all the years of training that a doctor puts in at medical school would be wasted if he never performed an operation, so all the talent that one possesses would be undiscovered or might even degenerate if one did not actually sit down and work on that talent. Thus the only method conducive to finding, improving and mellowing one's talent is hard work and perseverance. To come to the important question that is on the lips of every youth talented in art who is graduating from high school. That is, How can art Kas a talentj be utilized in the outside business world? Probably art has more branches than any other field today. Interior decorating, photography, window display, lighting, stage setting, and the more familiar designing of clothes and commercial illustration are just a few of the many occupations in which a knowledge of art would be essential. No special training is necessary-that is, no definite training, for if one is desirous of getting ahead one will gain all the knowledge the world has to offer and carve a niche for oneself that is secure and deserved. , . ufiic There is music in our ears! All around us the tuneful art is heard, swing-classics-sentimental5 the Julia Richman horizon is swarming with musical bugs-the kind that listen-the kind that whistle-hum-as well as the kind that play instruments or sing. Just look in some- day on room one fifty-one, and you're bound to see a species of the latter group- the virtuosi. You'll see the orchestra, struggling through their daily dozen-the glee club7s glib faces, straining their faces much more than their voices to create a sym- phony of sound. You,ll see an attentive harmony class here and there-and some- times youill hear whiffs of sounds being emitted from the massive machine in the mahogany case. Drifting around in the musical circle of Julia Richman, youlll find Miss Gould, Miss Burr, and Miss Hackett who supervise and conduct the various activities. Once in a while you'll hear an up and coming girl in assembly: ,lust as there are lots who are coming to the real stage of success, so there are some who have come. Perhaps you have heard of Evelyn Klien, Millicent Chandler, Philomena Aphetalny, Adela Kaplan, Anna'Daube, Gertrude Burke, Maritza Lesovar, Bernice Kossoif, Caroline Schreuber, Ellen Arclenesky, Virginia Prieto, Ruth Vozab, and others. ' But we not only offer you success in music--that is the claim of few-but to the very many Julia Richmanites we present the enjoyment of music. Yes, these are the talented ones, but they need you--they need your enjoyment of their art to make it Worthwhile. And We know that every one of you enjoys some type of music. Perhaps vides the swing-but they also dust you over with a bit of the other to broaden your view. And some of the hummers and mumblers Whose puckered faces might seem incongruous at times play their part too. Music is a possession of everyone-of any one who cares to listen. swing appeals more readily to you than the classics-so the music department pro- W 4 xx P, Be it French, German, Italian, Latin, or Spanish, we have all taken up at least one language in high school. And after plowing through a translation or trying to learn grammar and irregular verbs, many of us have doubted the values of anything but our own English. Yes, one may have to have a special talent to learn languages CI don't possess itj but once learned, languages can be of tremendous value. Let us first take up the sad case of Latin. It seems that no one likes Latin these days. They tell us that it won,t be of any use later onf, Well, in the dim realm of in- finity called later onv we may not have to challenge John Kieran,s latin quotations but the language can be of use to us in other ways. While there is no necessity for talking in the ancient Roman tongue, there is a need for organizing logically even what we say in English. Therein lies the Worth of having studied Latin. No student could have put together a Latin prose sentence or taken apart a bit of translation without being aware of the organization and planning behind it. The ability to organize and plan can help us not only to speak and write logically, but best of all to live logically. The other languages aforementioned have a more direct value. Of course in traveling and in contact with foreign people they come into play. One of the greatest joys of traveling is to be able to speak to the ordinary people you meet in their native tongues. Spanish has a Very close relationship to us. Many students feel that more so-called Americans should learn the tongue of their southern neighbors. Spanish and Portuguese are intrinsic elements in the movement for Pan-Americanism. Compulsory Spanish in high school is even visualized by some. In living logically, in enjoyment of travel, and in contact with people, lan- guages are of tremendous importance. Anyone who has not had a secret yearning to explore unknown con- tinents and brave great dangers? Who has not complained that she was born too late and everything worth doing has been done? Take heart, all you doleful ones! Remember Alexander the Great who bemoaned his fate for the same reason? History is being made all the time! A history that is just as important as that of olden times because it effects the lives of millions of people. Miss Garret, the head of the social science department, has graciously agreed to answer some of our questions on why history is important to us and of what value a special aptitude in the social sciences can be. She says that the purpose of our social studies is to develop an inquiring mind in the realm of human relations and to realize problems that the world faces, to develop a realization that we live in a changing world in which the individual, organized society, and social institutions have to adapt themselves, to develop a tolerant attitude toward the points of View and problems of other people, to develop an understanding of the American heri- tage of democracy and a determination to maintain that heritage in the face of other systems which are a threat to democracy, and to develop social mindedness so that we may work cooperatively in a group and may assume a position of leadership in community activities. We have among us girls who are especially talented in the subjects of history and economics, and they wonder what field of work they may enter in which they will be able to use this aptitude. There are 'many jobs which should be filled only by those 'who are especially interested in the social sciences. First of all there is the teaching of social studies, a field which is open to women, largely. Another grow- ing field which is essentially a woman's job is Social Work. Then there is research work and statistics in the Social Studies field with the various government agencies. There are many positions to be found in the economics division of large business en- terprises. Writing in this field is another and important phase of this talent. f-'is ocia! .Siience Q 22531 A ,K fig, lpizgdica jdaining The word, athletics, calls up in our minds the picture of a football or a baseball field. Wre hear again the cheers of the excited crowd and We feel the thrill of excite- ment that is aroused in us by our favorite team. That, however, is not all that ath- letics should mean to us. What sort of a person does the adjective, athletic, call to mind? Why, a healthy, clear-skinned, bright-eyed, handsome person of course! Any athlete that you can think of is healthy and it is mainly for this reason that physical training is taught in the school. Remember girls, you cannot be beautiful if you are not healthy. Posture, another important attribute of beauty,' is stressed in physical training. Exercise, too, for which we have little time during the school year, is given us in gym. Athletics, especially tennis, swimming and golf, are very interesting to girls and afford a means of spending leisure time in the open. Dancing is also stressed in physical training. This is quite important for the de- velopment of grace and ease of movement. There. are many girls among us who have special apttitude for dancing. This is a real talent whether it is in ballet or tap danc- ing. ln musical comedy, there is a demand for tap-dancers. A ballet dancer can find her place in the ballet, on the stage, or perhaps in motion pictures. The physical training department helps to develop many of our talents, but most important of all, it leads to HEALTH, the most valuable of our possessions. lltzs Secretarial Training is a fairly new subject, and it is not offered in many schools. It aims at giving the girls business technique along particular lines teaching them how to cooperate with others in business, and giving them character education. This is accomplished through the means of the Universal Publishing Company fa fictitious namej where every girl is given an office. There are ten departments in all where the girls take care of mail, gather statistics about the books printed, use the telephone, transcribe letters from the dictaphone and ordinary dictation, collect statistical information on the adding machines, operate the switchboard. The most recent office added to the course is that of being secretary to various teachers. Certain girls are assigned each week to act as secretaries, and they may do only secretarial work for the teachers. This gives the girls a little training outside of the classroom. The department feels that this course is a real aid to girls who seek secretarial positions. Of course it is up to all of you potential secretaries to prove it. For girls who intend to be stenographers or secretaries, a four term course of bookkeeping will give a good working knowledge of bookkeeping. However, a six- term course enables a girl to enter the working world with a thorough knowledge of bookkeeping. Many good positions are obtained by girls who started as bookkeepers. Besides regular accounting, the department offers other subjects, there are Commer- cial law, business arithmetic, business laboratory, and also a fairly new course in Salesmanship. This course is a very interesting one. The girls start from the beginning by learning all about various materials. No one can sell anything if they do not know what they are selling. This course is a very good one to take if one is interested in selling. It offers good opportunities. Many of the large department stores offer good opportunities for these girls. Of course, one must start from the bottom up, in the packing department for instance, but by starting there one may end up being a first rate saleswoman or even a buyer. Naturally, a girl must show that she has the ability, initiative, and personality which are the qualifications for a position of this sort .1 ti 1 l oo' das dd fl-if T I4 s ecrefaria jaining unc! .zdccounfing 3-. , WafAemafic5 ff r Textile Arts is a subject which one girl will feel is as good as any to make up part of an elective, and for another, it is of more importance. For the girl with not too much money to usually more inexpensive who is really talented in spend on her clothes, this course is a real aid. It is to make a dress than to buy one. Then we find the girl this art. She'may have a flair for the construction of a Or, perhaps she has a knack for making hats. However, study of Textile Arts has provided her with several basic abilities. They have also been taught the value of charm, personal appearance and good grooming. dress or for its designing. to each of these girls the Each of the girls may use the knowledge to a different advantage. The business girl must always present a neat, well-groomed appearance. If she has taken this course she will be able to do just that because she will have the ability to select a ready-made garment with an eye to such things as fabric, workmanship, cut and finishing touches. For the homemaker the knowledge of the construction process will prove a real saving, and also will provide individuality in personal dress and in the home. And for the talented girl, what? Many fields are open to her-for example the field of merchandising, dressmaking, or designing. Some are good at mathematics. Some are not. Most of us, good or bad, however, have been confronted with the problems of why we learn mathematics and what we can do with it in our future lives. Mr. Arnold, the head of the South School and also the head of the Mathematics Department, has been good enough to answer these questions. First of all, and most important to the majority of us, mathematics is meant to teach us a technique of thinking, that is a way of solving our every day problems by clear, straight-forward thought. Mathematics affects us vitally in our every day lives. It is the very founda- tion of civilization. We have seen the role mathematics plays in our daily lives, and now let us turn towards the future. What can we do with our special aptitude for mathematics? Well, letis see. lt is impossible to enter any field of science, chemistry, physics, etc., without a firm foundation of mathematics. Science and mathematics are closely allied. The field of statistics is open only to those who are especially gifted in mathematics. laid. ,446 cience The Science Department, which includes Biology, General Science, Chemistry, and Physics, is wide enough to interest anyone who has the slightest inclination towards bugs or animals, and a curiosity as to what makes the world go round. Most everyone in the school has at one time taken some course in Science, and never can it be said that there is one of us here who has not had some kind of question to ask about it, even if it were only to know the why and wherefore of personal things that bother us. The world is a mass of scientific problems, and we are constantly endeavoring to find the solutions. Miss Topp, the head of the Science Department, has tried to answer a few ques- tions about why it is taught in the school. 'She believes we should develop a scientific point of view, personal and social tolerance, the ability to self analysis, and to build up sound mental health. Many a girl has a special talent or adaptability for a certain phase of science. For example, she can reprint diagrams, model from life, or formulate problems and see them through in a laboratory. Teaching, medicine, social welfare, laboratory work, research, dietetics, geology, and anthropology, are Helds of endeavor open to women. Mr. Dow believes that the study of science prepares us to live with greater understanding in this scientific world. He thinks that the natural desire of pupils for information shows-the inclination they have towards further interests in this field. Mr. Dorin holds that science'has many rewards-thoroughness, patience, and a sense of personal accomplishment. A good worker possesses courage, alertness, the ability to think independently, honesty, and a love of truth for its own sake. She may become a beautician, with a knowledge of cosmetics chemistry, a journalist for a scientific publication, do museum work, or home economics. In other words, the vocations in which women scientists may engage, are numer- ous and varied. The object of teaching science in the school is to enable us to engage in these positions, and to provide a strong, solid foundation on which we can base our future life. isx nl E, lil E H956 The talent that is the English departments' business to develop is writing. At least that is the more obvious deduction. But in reality, skill in writing is only one result of our training in English. All of us should write correctly. We cannot all have a special talent in writing, however. But there is another great skill to be learned from the study of English that is more important than creative ability. Proficiency in reading is an achievement for which we should all strive. 'GBut, you are saying, UI have known how to read for a long time. There is nothing more than can be taught to me about readingf' Of course at this late date if any of the Seniors did not know how to read, their education would have been a sad failure. But merely calling words off a page is not skill in reading. Have you not often read a sentence over and over again to grasp its meaning? Have you not ever come to the end of a paragraph and found yourself without the slightest knowledge of what it was about? Have you not ever had to read a poem time and time again to understand the thought that was expressed in it? These situations have happened to almost all of us. lt is probably because they miss the meaning of what is on a printed page that some people say they do not like to read. Real reading, real enjoyment of literature is a talent. lt is a talent that can only be developed by living with books and by setting your mind to the task of understanding them. We often have thoughts that cannot be spoken. We often imagine that if we could sit at a desk with a piece of paper in front of us, we could write down those thoughts. But if we ever actually tried it, we would find that writing our thoughts is a talent in itself. It is not easy to convey what we mean by using words. The less of a barrier the paper and pen becomes the greater is the talent. But still greater a talent than the conveyance of thought is the ability to express feeling through words. It is only practice that makes for correct writing. Where our writing is correct, one barrier has been broken down. Clear thinking and sincere feeling will do the rest. MQ V 3 3 I T u , 5 81 1: 7 I ' KY NAN MATE Yes, one can grow to love inanimate things like the rain, or lonesome, black trees, or a violin. What makes me think so? I know because Ilve done it. Listen: I was small, oh very small when it happened. All day it had been dark and wet. Music was all about the house, in the corners of rooms and tumbling up and down the staircase. What kind of music? I forget, but it was played on a violin by my father. It was played by my father, my tall, care-bent father, on a violin. I had been looking at the cold, swift rain. My chin rested on the window sill. There was a lonesome, black tree outside, so near I could almost reach through the rain and touch one of its lean branches. But I dared not open the window for Mother sat in the corner, sewing, and Mother hated drafts. Yes, Mother hated drafts and she hated the rain and friendless trees and 'music and the violin. I can believe now that what happened was best and that the f retful unhappiness of the day was leading up to it. You see Mother had never loved the violin, nor had she ever liked music. Today, she sat here in my room, pretending that the silver lines of melody winding about the house weren't scratching at her heart. What about my father, my tall, care-bent father? I'Ie had lived with the violin as I have with the rain and leafless trees-always. We hadn't had dinner yet. Father had practiced all day and Mother was unhappy and weary over it. You see, there was a Wall between them, a hard impenetrable shaft of music. I had seen it in the dismay in my father's eyes. I had heard it in words that were never spoken. When dinner was ready, Mother took me downstairs. The music stopped. Have you ever noticed how the air vibrates when music stops? In reality it doesn't stop. It never can. I I saw Father put down the violin, so thin and fragile. He layed it on the deep couch in the parlor. The instrument was so light that it hardly sank in the cushions. There was strange, stilted- conversation at dinner. It went like this: 4'Spring is so soon now, do we need more coal? MNO, with Spring so near we can think of shrubs and flowers and a gar- den for Annf, ..- 1 r it - Fl . I I sf v r I If at f' I f v Must Ann have a garden?,7 uOh yes, gardens can be to children like-like music to grown-ups. HAH right, if it won't be too expensive. It won't, I'11 help with itf' 6'Are you ready to go in the other room? 4'Yes. Come Ann dear, comef, We went in the other room, all three of us. Father led me to the window and we looked at the rain together. I cooled my hands on the glass and he whispered words to me about a garden and the springtime that was not too far away. Father asked what melody I would like to hear and I knew I must go to bed soon. We both turned around. Mother stood looking down at the deep couch where she had been sit- titng. She bent forward and picked up the violin. It was crushed to pieces! How had it happened? Later she said she sat on it by mistake. I can never forget her face. It looked so cold, almost frozen. Father, tall and care-bent Father, was life- less for a moment. A tiny part of him must have died with the passing of the music. Father came back to life soon and Mother grew less cold. Words be- came more frequent. Violins are expensive, you see. There was no music for Mother at least. But there were ghosts of melodies from the dead violin for Father and me. In the spring he made me a garden, and the lonesome tree bloomed and before long the rain stopped falling. Yes, one can grow to love inanimate things like the rain, lonesome black trees, or a violin. What makes me think so? I know, because .I've done it. MIGNON HOMER SORROW INTELLIGENCE -5- OR - Flight of laughter Thereas nothing like an I.Q. Some collect stampsg some collect autographs, some collect books, some find scrap-books an interesting pas- timeg others have discovered that collecting humorous sayings and witti- cisms is fascinating. I guess I'm just different. I collect buttons. Buttons? Those ornaments on one's dress, coat, suit, or blouse. They serve their purpose. Some say theyire old-fashioned. It's zippers that are in vogue. But, I like buttons-modernistic cork, old-fashioned pearl, wooden Mexican sombreros, tiny Schiaparellian hands, classic circles on men's suits, sparkling sequin discs on girls, gowns, huge moon-shaped knobs on a manis overcoat, minute delicate specks on babies' undergarments . . . buttons! To me, buttons are not solely, ua fastening to be sewn on an article of dress usually as a catchf' as Mr. Webster terms them. Buttons are people. Individuals with a life of their own. They come into the world shining and glistening in their immaturity. How do they go out? As a child of average intelligence, my parents were ever trying to comprehend my total lack of interest for dolls-those adored objects of girlish devotion. I refused to play with Mary Jane of the flaxen curls and Patsy Lee of ringlets. For hours I would sit in the remotest corner of my father's department store, oblivious to all my surroundings. There Was Johnny Doughboy going off to war, marching in the midst of all the other soldiers. I had hundreds of round brown buttons. And there was Mary Rhine- stone-a dazzling creature. The illumination of her character showed itself so aptly in the brilliancy of her features. Perhaps she was destined to marry George Broderick F itzmaurice Patent Leather-the happy-go-lucky playboy of her dreams. The blackness of his tuxedo always recalls the density of his career to my mind. And Andre Splotched-who was destined to become a great artist. I can visualize the Vermilion, the green, the aquamarine and multi-colors of his palette. They were in readiness for the slightest wim of his brush aspiring towards a great masterpiece. The study of buttons is the study of people. Yes, richman, poorman, beggar man, doctor, lawyer, Indian Chief-theyire all there. Joe is a small, inconspicuous man of about forty-eight. He is the kindest, most sympathetic man, I think I'11 ever know. From six o'clock in the morning until about ten at night, Joe stands patiently behind the little counter, living in a world all his own. He continually scours the silver and marble fixtures. Joeis patience holds us in a sort of awe. He can stand for fully ten minutes fwe timed himj pointing out candy to a dirty-faced little boy. When the speechless customer finally decides what he wants, Joe accepts a copper penny and chuckling softly to himself, watches the little feet run out of the store. When we reprimand Joe for being so patient for a penny, he simply smiles and says, HPatience, my children, costs you nothing and gives you a great dealf, Joe has an 'chonor system. He says he cannot be bothered with writ- ing up accounts for his various customers fand he has manyj. He puts them on their honor, seeming to forget all about their debts until they pay up. We have used this system many times when our allowances were diminished. When we pay him back, Joe simply looks at us a moment and says, '4Yes, yes, that is correct, thank you. I remember asking him why he didn't write down these accounts and he said very kindly, uVVhen I cease to trust my friend, then will I close down my storef' During the cold weather we became aware of ,Ioe's winter costume. Let us start from the bottom up in describing it. First, his summer socks were discarded and in their place we saw heavy-knitted green stockings. We some- times wondered who had the patience to make them. Not wanting to appear inquisitive, however, we did not ask. We laughingly called his trousers uSharpie Pantsy' because they were baggy and the cuffs were turned up. In fact he looked so comical whenever he came out from behind the counter fwhich was very seldomj that we always laughed. Ah! At last we come to ,Iake's sweaters. He wore at least six, some with zippers, some with buttons, and some with hooks. He topped these off with a thick wool scarf, wrapped many times about his neck. Lastly, there was his ever faithful cap. Winter or Summer, rain or shine, Joe is never seen without his little brown cap. We asked him why he ,always wore it. He replied that he was so accustomed to his cap that he sometimes went to bed wearing it. However, I think I have discovered the real reason. I was in the store one torrid day last summer. .Ioe apparently forgetting himself, took off his cap to Wipe the perspiration from his forehead. Lo and behold! Not a single hair was there on the top of his glistening head! With a stare he remembered me, and quickly put his cap back. He turned nonchalantly to see if I were looking. I, of course, became deeply interested in a magazine at that moment. I seemed to sense the relief he felt in thinking that I had not discovered his great secret. Tomorrow when I come in he will great me with a cheery good morning. Wfhen I ask him if any of the girls have come in yet he will say, uNot yet, not yet,', and either go back to his polishing or to showing candy to a greedy little boy. The years are kind to those of us who try, And hold our dreams too high to let them rust. We must gain strength from fighting off our pain Before the world will look at us with trust. The time is near when We will close the door Behind the shelter of the red brick wall, And step into the footsteps placed before And set our pace in answer to our call.
