The Senator made the Judson cafeteria one of his final stops in a heated campaign battle that resulted in his victory over challenger Alex Seith. Accompanied by a press entourage that included an NBC television unit, Percy's November first appearance centered on the importance of voter turnout. The Senator gained the attention of a sizeable and noisy cafe- teria crowd with a shill finger-in-mouthn Whistle that left his aids open-mouthed and Judson students smiling. He then expressed his concern over the projected 3376 voter turnout, encouraged the students to vote, and opened the floor to questions from the student body. Questions ranged from the inevitable inquiries about the con- troversial campaign to the Senatorls views on government funding for Christian higher education. Senator Percy took time to talk to individuals as well, after which the entire group of students responded with a long round of applause. Senator Percy talks with students during lunch. The Boor The second play presented in the theatre departments fall produc- tion was The Boorf' lt utilized an over-bearing character in the person of Dale Slaton who commanded the stage with a great deal of yelling and breaking of furniture. Despite his violent character, the play was very humorous due to his equally independent oppo- site, played by Crystal Weirich. They were played by Jay Miner, Bradley Stephens, Carolyn Maystead, and Dave Bowman. lt followed the same basic theme as A Marriage Proposal. You bunch of yellow bellied rugrats-Get out of my sight! Elgin received a record snowfall and that, com- bined with the melting snow caused two floods during the spring. Tyler Creek and the lagoon became one while the base- ment of Volkman Hall received 2 to 3 inches of water. The point was under wat- er most of spring tri . . . . . . '79 was also a big year for engage- ments. Director of Student Life, Sally Ackemann became engaged to Bill Bos- co Boscaljon. Lee Gowin and Eileen Gammell also made the big step. Engage- ments during the month of May were Rodger Fiorito and Mary Imhoff, Frank White and Pam Martin, Peter Borzeka and Marcia Hardy . . . . . . Two new events during the year that will hopefully become annual was Little Sib Weekend and the Male Beauty Con- test. Little Sib Weekend was held for all the brothers and sisters of Judson students to come and visit the school. Everyone en- joyed a pizza party, a basketball game and a Friends of Jesusl' concert. Ruth Neely was chairman of the event. Approximately twelve Judson males participated in a beauty contest during winter tri. They appeared in evening dress and sports wear and were judged on poise, looks and personality. Dave John- son won the contest . . . The final record for Judson was 7-7-2, a con- siderable improvement over last year. Coach William Forlow cited Freshman Ken Barger for his contributions to the team's successes. Ken was given honorable mention for NIIC All-Confer- ence and All-State besides being voted to the NCCAA All-District team along with John Van Wynen and Dana Eddy. Top awards were given as well as Most Valuable Player QMVPD, Most Improved Player QMIPJ and Coach's award in each of the eight sports Judson offers. During the year, two students were named All- Americans. Dan Westlund received the honor in cross country and Jim Orrick received the award in track and field for the high jump. Frank White served as Spiritual Life Chairman and Brenda Ritter held the position of Social Activities Chairperson. Three people served as chairmen of Academic Life during the year. They were Noemi Alvarez, Ruth Fay and John Kennedy. Non-voting Cabinet officers were Jacqui Larimore-Elections, Mark Powless-Athletics and Wanda Fowler-Publicity. Chairmen of special committees were Ron Colson-Food Service, Melissa Allen-Special Projects and Kevin Noe and Ron Colson-Blood Drive. The tightly knit group of ambitious workers helped lead the Sen- ate to make many beneficial and practical decisions. As the young iff team worked hard to be sensitive to the needs of the students, they never neglected to realize each decision was to be kept in tune with J udson's philosophy of raising up young people to be well rounded individuals able to react with the quickly changing world. Kraig Kleeman expressed his joy in working as a liaison for the students with the administration and felt he had grown exception ally wiser being in such a position. Executive officers also ex- pressed their enlightenment as they saw the Judson administra- tion work together in a unique manner to be servants of the stu- dent body. The 78-79 Student Senate was very productive and a success in being a representative body for the Judson students. A- ' 'H' R. V -fl: fl xx ...up , , r A Wm 'Yi 1. WW sb 'W Q f ' K . .,' ,.
