ln the fall of i976 we converged here, over 422 students. We came from Ethiopia, Greece, Mexico, El Salvador, California, Minnesota, Arizona, New York, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, Michigan, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Maine, Kansas, Colorado, Arkansas, New Jersey, and Alabama. Within this broad geographical representation there was a further breakdown between large families and small families, urban, small town, and farm, American Baptists, General Baptists, Southern Baptists, Catholics, and several other Protestant denominations. Even with all of this diversity most came as Christians seeking a liberal arts degree in a Christian atmosphere. After arriving on campus, the overall impression seemed to be that everybody was alike. However, it took only a few weeks for a discerning observer to realize that there truly were differences among us, not drastic crippling differences, but healthy ones which allowed room for new ideas and growth. We were disciplined but still free to grow, to be an individual, to express ourselves, and hopefully to improve. This did not take place without some tension as a result of the diversity and occasional conflict over rules. Jesus said in John 8:31-32, lf you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of mine, and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Verse 36 continues the thought, If therefore the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed. For most, the Judson experience resulted in a greater knowledge of Christ and the discipline and demands Christianity places upon us. Discipline did not style our individuality and growth but gave it a direction and purpose. We could say, ln Christ I am feelin' free indeed.
