Student partisans attempted to sway the votes of their undecided fellow classmates. The focus was on the Democratic and Republican candidates. Ford displayed his abilities to many as a stable leader as President. To others he appeared monotonous. Carter's 'down home, breath of fresh air' style attracted much of America, but by some he was ridiculed as a backwoods nobody. The pre-convention campaign kept both men seeking verse, votes and victory. After nomination, the virtual two man fight captured attention via television debates, handshakes, volunteers, Walter Cronkite, pamphlets, and practically every other source of Americana offered. The election and its surroundings may have appeared as folksy as apple pie, but its effects penetrated to all the world. And when it was all over, they called Jimmy Carter Mister President. On August 6, Judson held memorial services for its 83 year old founder. In memory of what this man had done for all of us, a Beniamin P. Browne Memorial Scholarship Fund was started. Yet life goes on. We sought to grow closer to Christ through prayer study of God's word, loving eoch other until the doy we too would loin Christ for eternity. QQ-ff J I 5 5' in . J .blk-..4L.f ..-.... X xx k I 8 ln the fall of i976 we converged here, over 422 students. We came from Ethiopia, Greece, Mexico, El Salvador, California, Minnesota, Arizona, New York, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, Michigan, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Maine, Kansas, Colorado, Arkansas, New Jersey, and Alabama. Within this broad geographical representation there was a further breakdown between large families and small families, urban, small town, and farm, American Baptists, General Baptists, Southern Baptists, Catholics, and several other Protestant denominations. Even with all of this diversity most came as Christians seeking a liberal arts degree in a Christian atmosphere. After arriving on campus, the overall impression seemed to be that everybody was alike. However, it took only a few weeks for a discerning observer to realize that there truly were differences among us, not drastic crippling differences, but healthy ones which allowed room for new ideas and growth. We were disciplined but still free to grow, to be an individual, to express ourselves, and hopefully to improve. This did not take place without some tension as a result of the diversity and occasional conflict over rules. Jesus said in John 8:31-32, lf you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of mine, and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Verse 36 continues the thought, If therefore the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed. For most, the Judson experience resulted in a greater knowledge of Christ and the discipline and demands Christianity places upon us. Discipline did not style our individuality and growth but gave it a direction and purpose. We could say, ln Christ I am feelin' free indeed. in the best way I can. Z J! F51 . 'z' . Downstate Illinois and Keokuck, Iowa were the destinations for winter tour. The choir set out with high hopes for spring tour toward the western United States. Many concerts were given in Kansas and Colorado Springs without any mishaps. But unfortunately at Denver the climate changed and they were snowed in for a day. Yet time was taken for a short visit to Dr. Amos Barton, ex- president of Judson. The rest of the tour wound back through Nebraska, Iowa, and home to Illinois. STUDENT SENATE The l 976-77 Student Senate made many changes in Judson's policies, problems, and even publications. They took action toward many common problems such as dorm fines and traffic fines. Also the food committee was activated and the total atmosphere of student forums changed. The fountain which was installed in the lagoon was also part of Student Senate's activities. WJUD was removed from the iurisdiction of the Senate and given to the CA department along with a revised system for publications which, will go into effect in the I977-78 school year.
