Your roommate, whom the alarm has also slapped awake, begins to pull you out of bed, or even worse, turns on the lights and makes all kinds of vain attempts to be quiet. Next door, some incons iderate being isn't answering his alarm. With a sigh, you let your legs fall over the side of the bed, and gather all the energy you have left to pull yourself together and stand up. You did itl You really did it! The Heart ofthe Campus Chapel Ever since the gymnasium was built, memories of chapel consist of crunchy sheets of plastic on the floor, broken metal chairs, hastily put up curtains and a see-through stage. But the chapel curriculum boasted something extra this year - a new building. With a Spire tower- ing above the trees, the chapel was given as a gift by Mr. Ray Herrick of Tecumseh, Michigan before he died last year. We remain ever grateful to Mr. Herrick, and the gratitude is felt over and over again as we worship amid the beauty of the new building. Dr. Ryder and Dave Brown were the Faculty! Student Chapel Co- ordinators. 'bw ?, F Homecoming 1973 - A Songfor You Mus ic appeared all over campus on October 12 and 13 as A Song For You set the theme for homecoming weekend. Alumni returned and helped spread the sense of excitement for judson's llth homecoming. Classes and dorm residents decorated the campus which Queen Bev Calendar was soon to reign over. The highlight of the weekend was judson's 3-2 soccer victory over Trinity and the first annual Judson Invi- e tational for cross country, which Judson took third place against six opponents. The internationally famous Dundee Scots band, from nearby Dundee High School, led the halftime Q show during the soccer game before a overflowing audience. October 24 -27 hosted the fall play: Robert Bolt's A Man For All Seasons, a. play in which Bolt sought to find a man who represented the universal ideal of what man should or could become. He found this ideal in Sir Thomas More, who sought to be God's man, no matter what the storm or season. The play was excellently produced. The college community was proud of the talents of the cast. Steve johnson designed the set for his senior project and deserves recog- nition. Paul Beyer, too, deserves Worthy mention for his superb portrayal of Sir Thomas More. Cast: The Common Man . . When Mrs. Noye didn't want to go, they just picked her up and carried her on. The winter opera was indeed a community effort as several neighboring churches lent their Voices and their children to tell the amusing Version of Noah and the Flood. Written by Ben- jamin Britten and taken from the Chester My- stery Cycle Cwritten about 17455 the opera puts the story to music. Children of the staff and faculty and the surrounding area became the birds and animals and Elgin musicians lent their talent for the Orchestra. And then the animals came on and on. . . 24 if t. Many firsts took place in soccer this year as Coach Woody Smith led the mighty Eagles to the Co-championship of the NHC. Finishing with a 7-3-2 record C3-l-2 in NIICJ, the Eagles Went to the district playoffs for the first time ever to face Quincy College, a tough team who went on become NAIA National champs. It was the first time any Judson players have made All-District as Mike Glickert made the first team and Gashaw Abebe made the second team. Not only were Glickert and Abebe co-captains, but both re- ceived the co-Most Valuable Player award. Rich Ludwigson became the Most Improved Player, and Glickert was nominated to All-Conference. This year, Abehe also set Judson records for most goals per game 465, most goals per season Q75 and most points per season 1303. Experience helped this year as Heinz, I-Ierington, I-Ioffmire, Kassaye, Maffy, Thompson, and Winans, be- side Glickert and Abebe, were all in their last season. We were all proud of this great team as it was the first time in any sport that the Eagles have won the championship. 28 Soccer . . the Time Is Now Coach Woody Smith made a splendid debut as soccer coach as he took over the team this fall. A 1973 Judson graduate, Woody played soccer for four years at Judson, being All- Conference three times and Most Valuable Player three times. Coach Smith also holds Judson's record for leading scorer with 49 goals and 74 over- all points. A Year of Victory 444 From the top are Tom Laxton, Larry Crane, Tim Etter- nick, Duane Young, Jim Fay, Randy Moore and Coach Kraus. Setting the Pace 1974 Cross Country .ff 1973 was a good year for Cross Country as they won seven out of ten dual meets, and placed fourth in the conference. Coached by Don Kraus and led by Captain Randy Moore, the Judson run- ners raced to the second straight winning season in Cross Country at Judson. All of the men received letters in the sport and fortunately none of them are graduating and all will be able to participate next year. This was also the first time ever that a Judson student has participated in national competition as Duane Young Went to Kansas to place 277th out of over 400 in the N.A. I.A. national meet. Duane also received the Most Valuable Player award for the team. 292524 In his fourth season as Cross Country coach, Don Kruas believes in victory. Never say goodbye to a friend, rather smile and part slowly certain of a future reunion. Never say goodbye to a friend for the bitter finality of goodbye shatters the billowy sunshine of dreams. Never say goodbye to a friend, true friends part only for a time and then meet again in some new dream. Afterwards, she asked me how I enjoyed it g and I re- plied: I really wasn't paying attention: the yearbook kept going through my mind. And did it ever! Hardly an hour ever passed without thoughts of the plans in- terfering with those of classes, friends, work, and especially sleep. Putting out this book was kind of like expecting a baby. The first three months we planned and planned and the second three months were spent preparing those plans and getting things ready. And then in the last months, all we could do was wait and wait and wait for that blessed event to arrive when we could show off our finished product. It was hard and took lots of work, and made me so nervous that on those rare occasions when I found myself with nothing to do, Iwas frustrated. But my relationship with God, the Supreme Editor, grew as I had to learn to depend on Him to meet the next deadline, make the right decision, or just to find the time to do the endless things that needed to be done. I stumbled on Philippians 4:13 early in the fall and I repeated it countless times before our final dead- line: I can do everything with the help of Christ who gives me strength and power. So with the ever-present help of my Lord and the excellent efforts of a great staff, I proudly present the 1974 LAN- TERN to the judson community. the editor 4. av ' if We km wmv.,- if .
