Rumbling bass and drums. Peircing vocals. Whiplash guitar riffs. A musical institution iehose albums are dubbed gold upon release. Their concert tours are con- stantly sold out, and eye ry moyefinds its way to their legions of-fans. THE WHO: Peter Townshend, Keith Moon, Roger Daltry, John Entu'istle. The Who, one of the last ifisible traces ofthe British inrasion ofthe early sixties rock scene. On stage they are dangerous, with Moon smashing his drums, Daltry swinging his mike, and Toienshend ufindmilling his guitar before 'finally smashing it during thelfinale. THE ROLLING STONES: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, additional mem- bers: Mick Taylor, Ron Wood. M iaing mascara with menace, the stones haue taken their hard-hitting brand rock .from the elubs ofLondon to the biggest concert stages ofthe ieorld over a period ofa decade and a half Today they are arguably the biggest rock attraction in existence. ACXDC has come a long u'ay in the lastjeu' years, producing many Artist-mowing, ear-racking tu nes. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: Poet? Street pu nk? Hype? Springs- teen has been accused ofbeing all three. In truth this cha ris- matic singer-songufriter-guitarist is a little bit ofeverything, encampassing the best element of Rock K Rolllfrom the f50's, tilfs and the 7'0's. PINK FLODY: Rick Wright, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, Daifid Gilmore lreplacing Syd Ba rretj. The-first rock group to come on stage armed u'ith a light shou: They ufere also one ofthejirst English groups to play San Francisco-style psy- ehedelie roelf. LYNRD SKYNARD: Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Billy Poieell. Leon Wilkeson, Artim us Pyle, Steve Gaine. They u'ere rough, tough and plenty mean. They ieere one ofAmeriea's all time greatest, hard-hitting rock bands and their songs u'ill be remembered and enjoyed for a long time to come. BOB SEGER: Until recently this long-haired, raspy-voiced man just didn't get the breaks. After a dozen or so years in the music business, he became an overnight sensation. fiull. HEART: The roices of Ann and Nancy are beautiful and their songs meaningful. Seattle's o'u'n Heart, because ofthe talents ofthe sisters and the rest ofthe band became popular all orer the 'u'orld. VAN HALEN: Voted 79'sjastest-moiving new band, Van Ha- len has not disappointed its fans. Wild and exciting they hare captured the attention ofa lot ofyoung-fans. 158
