GLEE CLUB In the fall of the school year, l956, twenty- four girls entered the Glee Club. Seventeen of these were girls who had had experience in the club and the remainder were newcomers. During the year several girls dropped out, Miss Ruth Dowhirst, director of the Glee Club for two years, began im ediate training of the girls so that successful programs could be given during the year. The first program the Gleo Club was asked to appear on was the program for the Teachers' Insti- tute which was held at the Methodist Church in A- ledo. The two songs which were presented were: WBy the Bend of the Rivorn nThe Stars Are Brightly Shiningu The annual Christmas Vesper Service was held at the Joy Presbyterian church with the grades as- sisting the Glee Club. Although the students were greatly handicapped by the illness of Miss Dow- hirst, Marna Jayne Holmes took charge,and the pro- gram was enjoyed by the audience. Nine Glee Club girls sang at the Schoolmas- ters' Meeting which was hold at the Methodist Church, February 10. The songs sung were: WSwect Gonovieven, nSwing Alongn, nDrink to Me Only With Thine Eyes,nI'll Sing You a Thousand Love Songsn , and Wwhen My Dream Boat Comes Home.n A number of girls entered a local music con- test which was held March 5, and a good array of talent was shown, The girls entered were as follows: LOW Marna Jayne Holmes Sleepy Hollow Tune Kashmiri Song Letha Fifield Irish Hills Sunrise and Sunset Marne Jayne won first in the low division and also was ranked as best in all divisions which Ln- abled her to enter the county, March l3, at Aledo whore she placed fourth. In the sub-district which was held in Aledo, April 15, Marne Jayne was ranked nexcollent.N

MEDIUM Verla Holmes Driftin' Spirit of God Verla represented Joy in the sub-district and was ranked, ngoodn. HIGH Bernice Finch At Dawning The Enchanted Glade Grace Emerson The Morning Wind Edith Howlett To a Hill Top In this division Bernice was placed first and ranked Ngoodu in the sub-district. Singing NLullabyn by Cain and nKathryn's Wed- ding Dayn by Luvoos, the entire Glee Club entered the county meet at Aledo, March 15, ranking third. With memories of last year's superior rating in the state Miss Dewhirst and the girls entered the sub-district contest at Aledo, April 3, where once more, superior rating entitled the club to enter the next round of competition, the district con- test at Western State Teachers' College, Macomb, April 13.
