SCHOOL BUILDINGS Joy School has made a wonderful advancement since 1896. The motive that prompted the construction of the present high school building was the feeling the community expressed for the needs of higher educational development. The members of the Board of Directors at that time were: Mr. Will Love, Mr, James Shingledecker, and Mr. Alex Carnahan. The site was purchased from Mr. Wentworth Holmes. The building was con- structed by Harney Brothers, Contractors. The original two of which were grade roomsg two high school room later was used became the office building contained four rooms, on the first floor and used as on the second, one used as the and the other as bell room. It as a class room and still ,later The first year, the faculty consisted of one other member besides Mr. Amlong, the principal. Mrs. Alex Carnahan taught the lower grades, and he instructed the high school. The subjects taught here in the high school for the first year were: General Historyg Algebra I and II, Plane Geometry, English I, Il, and IIIg Physics, Zoologyg Botany, and Bookkeeping. No choice was given the students in their course. They carried on no extra curricular activities. In May l89Q was held the first Commencement exercises. There were four graduates: Myrtle Holmes Bradford, Mable Kiddoo Sherer, Lena Swanson Love, and Lena Snyder Shoppa. Each member of the class gave an essay of his own composition. Myrtle Holmes Bradford gave the Salutatorian address and Mable Kiddoo Sherer, Valedictorian, State Superin- tendent of Schools Bayliss gave the address of the evening. In 1920 the Joy Com unity voted to make theirs a consolidated school. This necessitated the acquisition of more roomg therefore several small buildings were moved to the campus to accom- modate the lower grades. This arrangement never having proved satisfac- decided to build a new building might have the same facilities the adjoining towns. Thus, Joy are proudly watching the new school building which is place on which an old frame tory, the Community that their children as the children in again the people of erection of another located at the same school house once stood. Though lacking the beau- tiful shade trees that are in the old school yard, the new grounds and athletic field provide a larger play ground for the children.

Everyone interested in basketball and dramat- ics is elated over the new auditorium which will be seventy-eight by fifty-eight feet. This may bring to realization the hope that Joy in the near future may be host to the county basketball tour- nament and the music and literary contests. A stage, twenty feet deep, will be sufficiently equipped for producing better and more difficult plays than have been given before. On the first floor there will be six rooms for the grades. The upper floor is for high school. Rooms have been provided for new subjects that will be added during the next few years. Aside from these, there will be lockers for all high school students, adequate lighting, and equal heat- ing in every room. 349,000 of the Sl09,000 used was granted by the Governmentf Mr. Howard S. Muesse, the archi- tect has shown great skill designing the building. According to the contractor the entire project will be completed by August 1, l957. All honor and love to the old building which has served us these many years, and while proud of our grand new building, we cannot help feeling a pang of regret at leaving the old where we have spent many happy and useful hours. Note: Louise Robison is grateful to Miss Knox for valuable assistance in the preparation of this historyo
