The motive that prompted the construction of the present high school building was the feeling the community expressed for the needs of higher educational development. The members of the Board of Directors at that time were: Mr. Will Love, Mr, James Shingledecker, and Mr. Alex Carnahan. The site was purchased from Mr. Wentworth Holmes. The building was con- structed by Harney Brothers, Contractors. The original two of which were grade roomsg two high school room later was used became the office building contained four rooms, on the first floor and used as on the second, one used as the and the other as bell room. It as a class room and still ,later The first year, the faculty consisted of one other member besides Mr. Amlong, the principal. Mrs. Alex Carnahan taught the lower grades, and he instructed the high school. The subjects taught here in the high school for the first year were: General Historyg Algebra I and II, Plane Geometry, English I, Il, and IIIg Physics, Zoologyg Botany, and Bookkeeping. No choice was given the students in their course. They carried on no extra curricular activities. In May l89Q was held the first Commencement exercises. There were four graduates: Myrtle Holmes Bradford, Mable Kiddoo Sherer, Lena Swanson Love, and Lena Snyder Shoppa. Each member of the class gave an essay of his own composition. Myrtle Holmes Bradford gave the Salutatorian address and Mable Kiddoo Sherer, Valedictorian, State Superin- tendent of Schools Bayliss gave the address of the evening. In 1920 the Joy Com unity voted to make theirs a consolidated school. This necessitated the acquisition of more roomg therefore several small buildings were moved to the campus to accom- modate the lower grades. This arrangement never having proved satisfac- decided to build a new building might have the same facilities the adjoining towns. Thus, Joy are proudly watching the new school building which is place on which an old frame tory, the Community that their children as the children in again the people of erection of another located at the same school house once stood. Though lacking the beau- tiful shade trees that are in the old school yard, the new grounds and athletic field provide a larger play ground for the children. Everyone interested in basketball and dramat- ics is elated over the new auditorium which will be seventy-eight by fifty-eight feet. This may bring to realization the hope that Joy in the near future may be host to the county basketball tour- nament and the music and literary contests. A stage, twenty feet deep, will be sufficiently equipped for producing better and more difficult plays than have been given before. On the first floor there will be six rooms for the grades. The upper floor is for high school. Rooms have been provided for new subjects that will be added during the next few years. Aside from these, there will be lockers for all high school students, adequate lighting, and equal heat- ing in every room. 349,000 of the Sl09,000 used was granted by the Governmentf Mr. Howard S. Muesse, the archi- tect has shown great skill designing the building. According to the contractor the entire project will be completed by August 1, l957. All honor and love to the old building which has served us these many years, and while proud of our grand new building, we cannot help feeling a pang of regret at leaving the old where we have spent many happy and useful hours. During the next seven years Pauline Walgren and Robert Gates were absent from the group, but joined again before Eighth Grade Graduation. W ' -August 2l,flf33! A group of verdant freshmen assemtici in rwom five to begin a nine months' siege with Ancient History, English, Algebra, .and Physiology. However, after completing a portion of the last two years in the standing army, we didn't feel so much like raw recruits as some of the upper class-men seemed to think us. Gordon McNielly was chosen president, and Betty Marie Kiddoo, sec- retary treasurer. Mr. Hultgren did much to make our two parties successful: one was in December at the hall and the other in Burns's yard in the spring. While we were pursuing this part of our education Maurice Johnson, Harold Swanson, Clyde Anderson, and Lytle Welch saw fields more 'attrac- tive than ours and departed from the group. We re- gretted hafing Gordon McNiel1y move from this dis- trict. When, after a three months' vacation, we again met, our path divided, the majority preferring the land of biology and those remaining visiting an- cient Rome. Mr. Ingalsbe, this year and the two remaining, very competently guided us. Earl Mc Daniel presided at the class meetings with Robert Gates as vice president. Betty Marie Kiddoo was re-eloctcd secretary-treasurer. There were two parties, one at McKown's and the other at the skat- ing rink with the freshmen. This year Bob Gates made the team in baseball, Russell Crawford, Bob Gatos, and Wayne Haas in basket-ball, and Russell in track. Earl McDaniel and Pauline Walgren placed in the county literary contest. Marna Jayne Holmes got second in the county music contest: During the year we were sorry to have John Burns move to Galesburg and Glenn Epperly move to Rock Island. Leland Nelson who joined our class last year also left. Dorothy Bailey went to Woodhull. When we started to school as juniors, we had a very interesting year before us. After having elected Pauline Walgren president, Marne Jayne Holmes vice-president, and Betty Marie Kiddoo sec- retary-treasurer, we were ready to proceed. First we enjoyed helping the seniors initiate the freshmen. Next an invitational progressive bunco party was held at the hall. High prizes went to Martha May Seiver and Eddie Munson and consola- tion prizes to Earl McDaniel and Verla Holmes. In the fall Ethel Dewhirst had her credits transfer- red to the Neponset high school and is still there Harold Harroun started in Joy after two years in the Aledo high sehooll Early in the fall the seniors decided they wanted a make-up box and new stage equipment for their play. They persuaded us to help them by pay- ing half after the track meet. It was a great im- provement for the stage, but it made a large dent in our treasury. In the latter part of our sophomore year Mr. Olson from the Josten Company came to our class and convinced us that we should select our class rings and pay a dollar on them so that they would come earlier in the following year. By October 7 everyone ordering a ring had turned his money in and all had received their rings. During the basket-ball season this class sold candy at the home games. Russell Crawford repre- sented our class on the team this year. In March some of the girls in our class were good enough vocalists to get to go to the state contest with Miss Dewhirst and help win first place. Earl McDaniel placed third in the oratori- cal contest in Aledo, and Marna Jayne Holmes won second plice inbthe county piano contest. After the many, various Nvacationsn we finally get together long enough to pick out a play. Prac- tice was delayed because we decided NHeart Trouble didn't have enough action, so we had to wait for information concerning nTiger Housean We added much to the stage faithfully, and the play was a big success. ' Before the play was off our hands we were work ing for the Junior-Senior Banquet. The nautical idea was carried out with a ship as centerpiece and programs in the shape of sail boats. For each senior we had a corsage of a gladiola and sweet- peas, and then pictures were taken to keep as a memory of the pleasant evening. Dancing and card playing followed the banquet. In Eoing all this work Mr. Ingalsbe was our coun- selor and guide. This year rob, Russell, and Earl made the team in baseball, ard Russell also made the track team. Not long after school started last fall we chose Eileen president, Pauline vice-president, and Betty Marie, secretary-treasurer. Then came the task of finding color combinations, flowers, and a motto that the majority of the class would accept. Finally green and gold was decided upon with the violet as class flower. Our motto is: Our aim: Success, Our hope: To Win. At the beginning of the year Wayne Haas, Don Baugh, and Russell Davis started back to school, but they were dissatisfied so they quit, leaving only five boys in the class. As we were badly in need of money, we gave WA Full Housen for our senior play. This play, lacking the mystery and excitement of WTiger Houson, was not so well liked. In accordance with the other classes the sen- iors holped with the all high school party, held December 23rd. We furnished rolls and pop. This year Russell Crawford and Earl McDaniel made the first team in baseball, Bob Gates, Don Walker, and Russell in basket-ball, and Russell in track. Every year the D. A. R. gives a trip to Wash- ington U. C. to one girl from each state. Each high school can select a girl from the senior class for a chance on the trip. Forrest Elene McKown was chosen by our class this year. x 5 , 4 SENIOR CLASSfPOEM At last! Also the Senior Class flowers For which we couldn't pay, And we owed Mr. Ingalsbe Until after the Senior Play? From one thing to another, We hardly had time to breathe, But we were all very sorry Our junior year to leave. And last--Our Senior Year! To tell all would take a day, So to point out a few major points, We'll begin with the Senior Play. WA Full Housen was given Under the direction of Vesta Keach, Who almost became gray-haired, Directing and trying to teach. The classes' reputation became WDoing nothing day after day, Of kihling time and gazing around Just to pass the time away.n Some said we ran around too much, Going some place night after night, And coming droopily to school the next day, We'd invariably get in a fight. Well, we soon get over it, When at ourselves we decided to look, So we snapped out of our drowsy spell, And started to publish a book! The 1956 WJoysterW was the result of Our efforts and time. With thanks to Miss Keach and Mr. Ingalsbe, The book came out just fine. The next important things Showed us what High School had meant. The Junior-Senior Banquet, Baccalaureate, And last--Commencement. And so those years leave memories We will carry all our lives, Thoughts of happy school days, Always to cherish and prize. CLASS PROPHECY Entering the tent of Ohow Nutzey, the magician, we are told the visions the mystic ball holds of members of the class of '37 in 1947. V A The first scene is that of a schoolroom. There are about twenty bookkeeping students working fran- tically to make their Trial Balance balance. seated behind the desk and working, also frantically, to get some economic papers graded is our Miss Eileen Olson who wishes she had taken up housekeeping aft- er all! The next scene is that of the stock exhibit at the State Fair in 1947. we see a beautiful Hereford steer being given a bath and a permanent wave by a little girl in dirty overalls---Betty Marie Kiddoo. We wonder if she learned this art of beauty culture at Knox. We now see an art museum where we find Russell Crawford just finishing the statue of a species of the human race 2,000 years from now. Russell has certainly become far-sighted since he was in school. Now we are taken far across the seas to Naples, Italy, where Miss Marna Jayne Holmes is studying piano under the direction of Leapover Mouskowski, the famed Italian instructor. After a few years of study she expects to return to the Uhited States and join the Metropolitan Opera Company of New York City or go on the radioiif she can find a sponsonl, or she may even resort to Major Bowes. Who knows? Next we see a lonely street in a large city. Walking along with his mouth screwed up trying to whistle, our Nlittle but mightyn cop, Don Walker, whirls his club around and advances toward a car parked in front of a fire plug. The occupants are one or more of the present seniors, but we'll let you guess who. The next scene takes us to a very cold region in Alaska where the Eskimos live. Inside an igloo sits Verla Holmes knitting her fastest. We are given to understand that she is knitting sweaters and pants for polar bears which are marooned on ice bergs. The next vision takes us way down to South Africa where we find Martha May Seiver selling jewelry to the natives. Martha has become quite rich because of the huge profit she makes on her cheap jewelry, which, of course, the natives think is magnificient, Well, that's one way to make money, Martha. -vu--..,....-.-..-..M - - 1 We now see a large building which appears ce be an animal hospital. Upon entering we see a demure little nurse--Letha Morse---swiftly gliding about helping the doctor diagnose a case of small pox which some elephants have contracted. Anyway, it's a gig job, Letha. Nex we see a ship far off somewhere on the Pacific Ocean. As it comes nearer we see a tall, dark, and handsome fellow scrubbing decks with the rest of the dubs. It could be Bob Gates ---- well, it is. He expects to be a Captain someday, but right now-look! We've reached one of the Hawaiian Islands. What'does that big sign over there say? WMade-Rites-lOd.W And the proprietor is none other than Forrest Elene MeKown. Well, I still like mine with onion, Mickey! The next scene is that of the make-up depart- ment of Twentieth--Century Fox Studios in Holly- wood, California. Shirley Temple, who is now making WSweet Sixteenn is being made up by Miss Pauline Walgren. Well, Polly, you made Hollywood, but not as an actress! Next we see awlarge mountain. Standing at the highest point is Harold llarroun. He is pointing to a.holelsix, feet in diameter, which he thinks goes to China. Oh Well! he'll learn, if he lives long enough. The next scene is that of a five and ten cent store. Behind a long counter we find Lucille Lingafelter, who seems to be gliding about very smoothly. Later we find that she is standing on a little car which runs on a track, and by pressing a button with her foot, she can move wherever she pleases. That saves the wear and tear on shoe leather. Now we are at a large circus. The announcer is introducing the most famous trapeze performer of the world ---- Miss Louise Robison ----- who will do a daring act 50 feet in mid-air without a net below. Well, Louise is certainly still sure of herself! The last scene takes place in a large library where Earl McDaniel is receiving awards for his novel,'WTo Marry and Still Love.N We never thought Earl's ardent love of literature and composing a- bility would lead to this! A Happy Future for Class of '57! While they are anxious to occupy the new rooms and use the new equipment, they are just as eager to do their part in making the new building comfort able. To this end they have already earned a part of the money necessary to equip the waiting room. Plans for additional purchases of next year are al- ready made. - Last year the subscription fund was used for the purchase of a radio. This made possible a mu- sic appreciation hour over t he radio for this year The course consisted of twelve lessons conducted by Walter Domrosch, on N. B. C. from New York City. Student note books were used during'the class hour which added interest to the lessons. There is an old adage to the effect that the grass on the other side of the fence always looks greenest. How erroneous this is. There is no need to travel farther than the boundaries of our own village to find most any talent deisred, students excelling in music, both instrumental and voice, good speakers or born actors. The eighth graders aspire to be authors. ' At present they are writing their.autebiographies. Grade seven excell as public speakers. Lmny fine talks have been given during the year in geo- graphy, current events, and on several special sub- jects. Several students in Junior High deserve hon- orable mention. Bob Pence, Everett Dodson, Louise Loving in the eighth grade, and Koorene Danner, Lorraine Fisher, Patricia Noble, Rozeta Robison, and Darlene Franson in seventh grade have been per- fect in attendance for the entire year. Bob Pence, Gloria Harney, Shirley Braucht, Do- ris Seiver, Madge Steele in grade eight, and Rozeta Robison and Patricia Noble in grade seven have been on the honor roll every month for the entire year. -This year an especial effort is being put forth to better our attendance record in Junior High. In the past in many specific cases poor Work and failure to Wpassn can be directly attributed to poor attendance. We have decided that sickness is almost the only excuse for absence. Four hundred seventeen library books have been read so far this year in Hunior High. 0ne hundred fofsyvslx vritten book reports have been made and a limi number of oral book reports given. ' Pleria Harney, Don Schneck, Shirley Braucht, Larbha Maas, and Duane Hunsley in grade eight have each read over twenty books. Patricia Noble and Merwon Jognson are our greatest readers in grade seven. Patricia leads all Junior High readers. At the time this book foes to print she has read thirty books. The following students won certificates in penmanship for this year: 7 Darlene Franson Patricia Ioblo Mary Jane Stead Last Year Hola Fifield Clair Hyett Gloria Harney Doris Seivor GRADE EIGHT Robert Boyles Everett Dodson Buster Hudson Clair Hyett Bob Pence Don Schneck Ernest Hodgson Lucille Lilly Verlea NCDOna1d Grace Diehl Shirlev Braucht Hola Fifield ' Juanita Glidden lhrtha Haas Gloria Xarney Betty Knox Louise Loving Don Sciver Madge Steele Martha Jane Scranton Jane Uakeland 8 Juanita Glidden Duane Hunsley Louise Loving Don-Schneck Doris Seiver Martha Haas Madge Steele Bob Pence GRADE SEVEN Richard Adams Harold Coons Junior Fullerton Mbrwon Johnson Richard Johnson Junior Miller Vern Seiver Eleanor Mae Bloomer Moorene Danner Lorraine Fisher Elinore Flaherty Darlene Franson Eleanor McKown Patricia Noble Priscilla Robison Rozeta Robison ' Lmry Fane Stead Hazel'Martin EI GHTH GRADE SEVENTH GRADE 4 -EJ. .W,P5nEi75!'7' 'N' Q, .' BASKET BALL Four letter men returned to the team this year: Russell Crawford , Merle Hyett, Robert Gatgi , and Paul Munson. In choosing a captain for the team, Merle Hyett and Russell Crawford received the same number of votesg therefore they were made oo-cap- tains. In the games before the county tournament they won five games and lost five. The team ranked seventh in the league. The first game of the tourn- ament was played with Matherville in a very hard fought battle for victory the score of which was 29 to 20. Russell Crawford ls deserving of mention in this game because of his remarkable efforts. He act- ed like a freshman with a lot of energy and nothing to do with it. In the second game of the tourn- ament the team was defeated by Aledo 28 to 41. The first ten men: Russell Crawford R. Forward Merle Hyett L. How many of the students in the high school know the names of all the former graduates? Since the nine- teen hundred-thirty seven class is the last class to graduate from the old building, we decided to learn the names of all our predecessors and to put their names in the JOYSTER. Due to the lack of complete records in the school, it required a large amount of research work on the part of the staff. Several of the alumni were very helpful to the class in acquir- ing the information needed for this section of the JOYSTER. The names of the earlier graduates and of the superintendents of each class from 1899 to 1957 will follow, Our best wishes are extended the former stu- dents of the school, as we realize that after we re- cieve our diplomas at the end of Hey, we too, will be Alumni of dear old Joy High.
