Faces reveal emotions. Emotions reveal inner beliefs and character as they are affected by outside pressures. Inner belief and character reveal a combination of principles learned in our home, school, community, and country. In the faces of the senior class of 1973 we see dignity, pretense, disguise, assurance, confidence, uncertainty, and a multitude of other emotions. These emotions help write a history of our 1973 school year and this history is unfolded through these and other faces. 2 Faces reflect the inner emotions of all people. In a year when the release of the American prisoners of war by North Viet Nam was a reality rather than a dream, when it snowed twice in Jourdanton, and when JHS graduated thirty- four seniors who took their place in the world, happiness was the most important emotion. Happiness of playing in the snow, talking to Santa, being with someone special to you who shares an interest in what you are doing, or just chatting with the boys is as real as the happiness of reunion with a loved one. While the tears and loneliness were there, we chose to remember the happy emotions as reflected in these ... Individual Faces 3 4 In organizations and activities, faces reflect the frustration, concentration, or interest in one's inner thoughts. Whether the individual is working with livestock in FFA, building a bon fire, cheering the home team on, embroid- erying decals on a blue denim shirt during an FHA meeting, or eating a snack during break time, his face is ever- revealing. As we worked individually or in groups, much of ourselves and our emotions were revealed in our... Group Faces 5 Faces reflect emotions, and the height of emotions is seen in sports events, which draw upon both the physical and emotional reserves of a person. While the Miami Dolphins set a professional football record by going through the season undefeated and the UCLA college basketball team won an unprecedented seventh national championship, winning its 75th game in a row, the athletes of Jourdanton High School were struggling through a year of frustration and disappointment. Whether the emotions were stirred by Coach talking to the quarterback, in the heat of a basketball game, momentary elation at a football game, struggling in track, or effort in basketball, various emotions were seen in ... Because of their endless support and tireless efforts on behalf of the youth, the staff proudly dedicates the 1973 CHIEF to these two people, Alonzo and Barbara Gene Peeler. We recognize, first of all, that any success that we have achieved in yearbook publication is due to their assistance in photography. Without their darkroom, equipment, knowledge, and efforts, we would have fallen short of the level of excellence that we were striving for. For their help we are extremely grateful. Not only have Mr. and Mrs. Peeler been a great help to us in publishing our yearbook, but they have also given their support in all areas of school endeavor, from his refereeing at Junior High and B-Team Football games to her active support of the athletic programs. Many of their personal plans have also included the young people of the school and our lives have been enriched by the opportunities that they have made available to us. For their assistance and for their caring about us, we are extremely grateful. We have chosen to say thanks to these two community leaders in this small tribute, by dedicating this yearbook to them. Thanks again, Barbara Gene and Alonzo Peeler, friends to the youth. 12 Barbara Gene receiving Chamber award as Woman-of-the-Year. One-Act Play contest this year was held in the auditorium at Kenedy High School. We were the last to present our play. In very keen competition, our play was judged second only to Three Rivers' play. Tom Bohl was named Best Actor and both Cathy Self and Terri Davidson were named to the All-Star Cast. Both cast and crew felt their efforts were well-rewarded and satisfaction from a job well done was seen in all of our faces. We all had to admit that eating at Barth's was an added incentive that helped to add to the pleasure in our faces. 73 LEFT TO RIGHT: Mark Shows, Debate; Pat Novosad, Spelling; Mark Stroman, Debate; Sheila Vyvlecka, Typing; Cheryl Phillips, Persuasive Speaking; David Pawelek, Slide Rule and Number Sense; Donald Vrana, Debate; Nancy Henry, Slide Rule; Beth Edwards, Slide Rule and Number Sense; Cathy Amador, Typing. Senior Trip We ate again, not always enough, but we ate. We rode horseback, went on the wildest hayride in the history of hayrides, went water skiing, took a float trip down the river, had a party and dance, and played vol- leyball and tennis. Most of the fun we made for ourselves, but we will never forget our trip to Hide- away in the Pines at Bastrop. We sunned by the pool, like Loretta. We showed our Senior attitude like Mary Ann and Drucy, as expressed by Mary Ann's shirt. We played ping pong like Sheryl Phillips and Mr. Herrington. We sat in the shade and watched, like Barbie, Jesse, and Betty. We swam and not always in a suit, like Ninta. We slept very little, like Tom. We watched from some safe place, like Christina.
