ft e pmatl to tfoa 7k 963CfUefc EdtlM . . . 'Betty 'Bourn iit. Edl yi . . . tm Ron %cdock, It is with sincere gratitude and warmest regards that the staff of the 1963 CHIEF dedicates this publication to Mr. William J. Brown-- It is not what he has, or what he does, but rather what he is that makes this man our friend. 'Jowood The time has come to pause-- To turn and take a backward glance. We behold a profusion of Memories and images, imposed one upon another; Some are somber, some are brilliant. This record has been written, and we are proud, for the passing of time cannot fade these forms. We present to you-- the 1963 Chief, with the hope that in its pages you will find warmth as you recall school life at J.H.S. How could we ever forget the nights we spent in Excitement! ! Our football team aroused a great deal of enthusiasm, and the spirit ofJ.H.S. lingered even after the Pep Rallies and Bonfires were over. After the games, our throats raw, we looked forward to..... Relaxation!!....with our favorite date, steady beau, or best friend. Sometimes the joy of these fun- filled hours was dimmed as we thought of. Studies!!... .those long hours spent cramming for exams or relaxed studying with friends. Even the volumes of note- books we filled in Biology class will be re- membered warmly as a part of this great High School Life. The Campus! !............How well we shall recall the way- worn short-cuts, the mesquite trees that shaded us from the Texas sun, and the buildings echoing with once familiar voices, and remembered footsteps. We come to J. H. S., and we depart. And t as we depart, we realize how great a part this campus and this phase of life have played in our struggle to develop from the students into the leaders of to- morrow . We are glad that our fortunes let us walk this way................................... Jk Votm 'Jok 7 SvJpwtfMhti - %i. Akwjp flcmon, To a Man----- The time has come to pause--to turn and take a backward glance. We behold a profusion of memories and images, imposed one upon another ;”------ We remember a lunchroom crowded with scurrying Juniors, arms loaded with crepe paper--purple crepe paper; and on a ladder, towering above them, and working just as diligently, we recall seeing a man. We have visions of a Hawaiian supper--Seniorsseated on the ground, munching contentedly on chunks of bar-b-cue. and sporting leis--and in the midst of the students, we recall seeing a man. We can quickly call to mind the gaiety and laughter, and also the finality marked by the Senior Trip--May. 1963. The pool table, the shuffle board, the archery range, the dance floor, and the lake--we remember all of these, and in the midst of them, we recall seeing a man. A man--a friend. For making our High School Days ones which will glow in our memories all our lives, and for being a part of those memories, the Senior Class of Jourdanton High School. 1963, would like to thank you, Mr. Harmon. So we have paused, and taken a backward glance, and found a profusion of memories of which you are a part. Betty Bowen Senior, 1963 8 MR. WILLIAM J. BROWN. B. JANITORS BUS DRIVERS To the Staff: Well, can you believe that we are actually reading this conglomer ation of sweat, pictures, words, and time, rather than working on it? I can’t! It took a great deal of determination, planning, and prodding to get the show on the road, and the deadlines met, but now that it’s finished, aren't you proud! I guess that now would be the best time for me to tell each of you Thanks --I wish there were something bigger and better to say, but that about covers it! My special gratitude and couldn't-have-done-it-without-you 's, go to Mrs. Ulcak. Wasn’t she a great sponsor! I hope that in the years to come, some other editor is as lucky as I have been, and gits her agin ! Another big vote of thanks goes to Walter Vickers. You know, he isn’t even a member of the staff, but he shoulda been; when you look through this book, glance around at the art work--it took lotsa blobs of India ink, many turns of the hands of the clock, and. I imagine, many shady epithets, to do the job, but Walter did it! So now the work is o-ver, the deadlines have been met, and the time ha-s come to reap the harvest--sit back, relax, and enjoy the CHIEF--1963 style! THE STAFF Betty Bowen . . . Butch and Danny are the ready, willing, and able JHS Senior linemen. The annual bon-fire is a good example of good ole JHS team spirit. Leslie was our quarter- back. He too played his last year of high school football. This group of bright-eyed and bushy-tailed young ladies are the Crystal City majorettes and the Jourdanton majorettes before the football game, BELIEVE IT OR NOT. What could be a better way of winding up a footbajl season than receiving the well-earned awards? Five of these lads are receiving their last high school football jackets. All of these boys are to be con- gratulated. They worked hard and had a good season. Meanwhile 35 We were being entertained by LITTLE RED RILEY and HAPPY DAZE. Jourdan- ton was very fortunate in having these very fine gentlemen and entertainers visit our school and share their skills and gifts with us. The FHA installed its new officers, Jane Bender being the new leader. These young, inexperienced, sweet things are the freshman girls who were initiated formally into FHA. They are anticipating with joy the informal initiation. These students are not victims of a hand crippling disease but are the Seniors displaying their latest status-symbols-- their SENIOR RINGS. 36 The students of JHS were of great service to their community when they helped with the administering of the oral polio vaccine. fim l Wcmou THE FIGHTIN INDIAN TEAM-- Of 1962 was produced through the efforts of many--the squad, the coaches, and the managers. The squad supplied the sweat, man-power, com- plaints and cheer, while the coaches provided the patience, determination, and pep-talks! The team was thus kept ready by the managers, R. Ayala and N. Riley, kept willing through their own spirit, and kept able by the prodding of coaches Loeffler and Anderson. The Staff of the Chief says--MHats off to a fine team, with a good record, high spirit, and their share of luck--both kinds!! Leslie Harrison Quarterback Six JHS Indians Selected On District 284 All Stars The Jourdanton Indians, who tied for second in Dis- trict 28-A, won three places on the first all-district foot- ball team and an equal num- ber of spots on the second squad. Named as all-district selec- tions were Jourdanton’s Tac- kle Butch Martin, Halfback Marshall Darby and Full- hoHr Rillv Kaiser. Quarter- ed Ei back Leslie Harrison, ter Pete Schorsch and Leandro Gonzales were ch( en on the second team. Only Three Rivers wd more places in all-district lections than did JHS. T1 Bulldogs landed four gri ders on the first team ar three on the second. Jourdanton’s Butch M tin was one of two 28A sta to repeat as an all-distri first team choice. He w named as an all-district guai last year and chosen as i all-district tackle this ye£ Only other repeater w Three Rivers’ Ronnie Cor who shared first-team cent honors last year in the v ing. These five war-hooping Seniors have led the Indians this season, and have provided a good substantial backbone for the team. West Dorothy Sherrell Marian Gilmore The staff of the CHIEF takes this opportunity to thank the Jourdanton PTA for a job well done! Talk about an active PTA — we have one! A little gal who toured Europe this summer can vouch for that. It was partly due to the efforts of the PTA that the trip was made possible, and the whole student body thinks it was great of them to do it. Not only are they exporting girls from the United States, our PTA is also helping to export disease. They graciously gave of their time and talents in helping administer the Sabin Oral vaccine this year. Their time and talents weren’t all they gave to the community; they organized a TEACHER OF THE YEAR program in which one teacher from our school system is selected as the outstanding edu- cator for the year. Mrs. Vera Hays was selected this year. In the hope of furthering an interest in the language of our country, English, the PTA awards the eighth grade student maintaining the highest average in that course of study an English pin. This year Earl Erwin received the award! 67 say. The Jourdanton Cheerleaders take time out to pose for a press photographer. THEY'RE GOING TO BE IN THE PAPER! The real culprit is Anna who informed on Josefa’s son, her sweetheart, resulting in his execution. The One Act Play won first at the District Meet. Betty Bowen was selected as the best actress and Angela Stumpe and Carol Earley were named on the All-star cast. At the Area Meet Betty Bowen was selected as a member of the All-star cast; however, the play did not win any honors. In this scene Anna tries to make Josefa hate Madame Androya in order to cover up her own guilt. 70 This group of band members competed with other band members and were selected as members of the District Band. These Band members got first place ratings at Solo and Ensemble Contest. Mrs. Bender gives the basketball girls their hard earned rewards. Kay receives her blanket and a trophy and it was later told that Kay was to play in the State All-Star Basketball game. These are the smiling Freshmen who lettered in Basketball. Coach Loeffler honors the All-District Football players. Coach Anderson honors the boys who lettered in Basketball. These charming girls of the Class of ’63 represented us at the District meet and won first place honors in spelling. Congratulations! The band got a second division in marching. The majorettes go to console the de- jected band members. Isn’t that cute! The Seniors have learned a new trick. All they needed was colored chalk, a black- board, and no teacher around. This achievement will certainly go down in the annals of the history of JHS! During the month of December the JHS Band participated in Marching Contest which was held at Pearsall. Here we see the Jourdanton Band lined up for inspection. They got a first division in inspection! The Jourdanton Band is preparing to begin their marching performance. Heads high and hopeful, they present their show. This was the first time this unsponsored activity had been executed at JHS. The talented Seniors outdo themselves in these fabulous Christmas murals. One of the most interesting events of the year is the local stock-show in which many high school students participate. 73 The biggest problem in decorating for the banquet was the parachute The intelligent looking girl with the sucker in her mouth is the president of our FHA. Oh dear! The poor boys are still puzzling over the parachute. Jimmy looks particularly exasper- ated , but from the angle at which Bill is standing, we are unable to uncover any powerful emotion. rl Two old friends meet at the Rodeo on the They lo°k 3 little puny' Perhaps they have been fair grounds. Earlier they attended a meeting of all Junior Historians and heard many of the themes of Junior Historians read. Betty read her term theme which was a family history and received honorable mention and a prize of money. Johnny Lane, famous folk-singer and native of Atascosa County, came to our school and entertained the Junior Historians and the future Junior Historians. He sang songs pertaining to Texas history. Being a Senior, I just had to include this charming picture. Here we see the esteemed Senior Class of 63 receiving graduation gifts. The Junior Historians again. These Junior Historians are also members of the Jourdanton Indian Band and as such will rush to San Antonio from the festivities in Austin to march in the Illuminated Parade. 75 Dr. Carlton B. Downing of Trinity University talked to the students of JHS about the teaching profession. He was also the guest speaker at Graduation. Who scared Chester Gail? One of the guests at our annual Career Day was a hair stylist. Here we see Chester Gail taking on a bit of the new look. Of course the hair style isn't completed yet--is it? Mrs. Hays, our well-liked and very capable history teacher, receives the Outstanding Teacher's Award. Congratulations. A word from the wise? (Below) My Sweet Embraceable You! ’’ Thespians of America! Will success spoil the Juniors of 63? I guess we will never know. JUNIOR-SENIOR BANQUET Each year the Junior class gives the Senior class a Banquet. This year the theme of the Banquet was ,,Holland,,. This is a picture of the head table. As seen in the picture the Juniors and Seniors are really dressed fit to kill . It is a custom of our school to read the Will, written by the Seniors and the Proph- ecy, written by the Juniors. It is in these pieces of literature that all grudges and feuds come to light in sarcasm. Because the Banquet was held in the Gym for the first time, the illustrious Juniors were faced with the difficult problem of concealing the baskets. They solved their problem by making the baskets into giant tulips. This was one of the highlights of the decorations. I would like to take this opportunity as a Senior and in behalf of the Senior Class to thank the Juniors for such a nice Banquet and congratulate them on doing such a nice job preparing the Banquet. We thank you! A windmill served as the entrance with two Dutch children guarding the door. The servers were dressed as Dutchmen. I would like to know just who started this. I don’t like to swim fully-clothed. Bet and Les are full of goofy ideas. THE ’’SENIOR TRIP” Heave ho! and in Patsy goes! One should know better than to walk near a pool fully-clothed while on a Senior Trip. It just is not safe. This healthy looking specimen is a Senior. Vive la Senior! Don't just stand there, Darb, SMILE! The Seniors and Kathy Brown. Kathy isn’t a Senior this year; she’s learning the trade early. 117 Playing cards is a great pastime. Table tennis and shuffle board were enjoyed by the Seniors and their sponsors. This is the opposing team of the top picture. I wonder who’s winning. Another sponsor at the pool table. The Seniors had to set up a curfew for the sponsors on their outing. They were up until all hours of the night recreating. 118 These grim-looking spectators are waiting for the skiers to come back safe and sound. This gentleman is not a member of the underworld but is our Superintendent. He is also a pool shark. Santos Adames, Nora Alaniz, Margaret Amador.
