But to us, sheis as a living being, almost human in our minds. We thinklof her in feminine terms and this is not just by coincidence. As a mother protects her unborn child. so 'she protects and provides for us since most of our days are spent sheltered within. the confines of her massive ribs. Deep in her bosom we can feel the life that is hers. Standing, sitting, or lying, the pulsating throb of her turbine-driven heart is evident. Her life blood ,in the forms of steam and electricity givesus life. Our ears become saturated with the muffled roar of her comfort-bringing exhaust and intake fans. Our nostrils become attuned with a multitude of fumes - - paint, oil, humanity, food and countless other odors - - all blend to give her own distinctive one. These are all comforting sensations to us, for once we have known the deafening silence, the frigid darkness, and the stgmach-twisting fear that comes with her being dead in the' water - - allayed only by our faith that she will live again - - we surely know she lives! But there is more to it than this - she has character, the character of those mythical women warriors - the Amazons. For while she may shelter and protect us, to an enemy she isas deadly and ferocious as she-wolf. Her clean, grey lines bespeak her ability to run long and hard -'to rip and slash her enemy with all the terrifying might ofher eight thousand tons. He may hide beneath the waves, skulking through the valleys and canyons of that underworld - - he may slither through the skies peeking from behind mounds of clouds - - or he may lurk beyond the horizon on the rolling plains of the ocean - - but it is to no avail. For her senses are so acute and her stamina so tremendous and the fangs of her missiles, guns, and torpedoes so deadly that he can know no escape. But do not misunderstand - she is no beast, for she has a soul - a soul made of the minds and hearts of each and every man of her crew. This, my friends, is our lady - the fAY DEE.', As the first man of our ship, we would like for you to meet and get to know our Captain ---- CAPTAI Az sea, his is a lonely existence, separated from his fellow officers by the barrier of his position. It is a position so demanding that he isydenied the companionship of a friend to confide in. No longer can he be as other men - he must remain above the fears and frustrations of others giving his entire being to his ship. He is the leader of the leaders and whatever the price, he must maintain that image. If these leaders are strong, he must be stronger - if one is weak, he must bear the added burden of their weakness. His is the ultimate responsibility - thus. responsible for the actions of every man within his command. Should they fail, then he fails, with them. His is an existence of decisions - some minor, many critical, and quite often required instantaneously when awakened from the sleep of extreme fatigue. His body must be superbly conditioned to withstand the rigors of long hours with little or no rest. His mind must be rigidly disciplined to endure the unbelievable pressures of command. He must be many things, but most of all, he must be the Captain.,' H PAUL D. BUTCHER CDR Commanding Officer Huntington, West Virginia Captain Crunch' ' Observing a gunnery exercise. I X Looking for the Soviets Rest and Recreation? Photos: ET1 O'Su11ivan ETR2 Jensen WARDROOM Now we would like to introduce you to the ship,s officers, 'referred to in nautical terms as the wardroom. Traditionally, the wardroom was a cloak room where junior officers met to chat. However, over the years, it has become the lounge, dining room and conference room for shipboard affairs. There are several paths that might take a man to a place in the wardroom - none of which, I might add, are easy. The lay Deen wardroom is comprised of men who have utilized nearly every one of those routes. Some came by way of the Naval Academy, one from the Maritime Academy, some from the Naval Reserve Officers' Training Corps, one from West Point and others from the Officer Candidate School. One third of them came from the enlisted ranks via the Navy Enlisted Scientific Education Program, the Warrant Officer-Limited Duty Officer program and one ancient old salt by the now extinct enlisted-to officer integration program. They have come from every section of the country, their religious beliefs vary, their marital status differ, their likes and dislikes differ, but in one important respect they are all agreed - they are dedicated to the service of their nation. On' the next few pages you can meet each of them. ffl, .. EXEC TI V OFFICER Ahalf We are in luch. This is the Executive Officer. Usually, he is the most difficult person on the sh ip to locate, but not because he hides - itls just that the numerous duties of -being second-in-command keep him forever on the move, The story is that one of his children asked his wife when Daddy was coming home'from the cruise - - and that was two months before we left Norfolk. CLIFFORD L LANING CDR Executwe Offlcer Van Nuys Callforma WEP This distinguished looking man with the iron-grey hair is reportedly the senior member ofthe Mod Squad. Arthur H. Richard W. In the beginning all that was available was a turntable and a microphone. But this didn't stop Cary, who spent many hours trying to make the station the best possible. The crew started to enjoy the station right from the beginning and shortly after WWfD s birth, other disc jockeys started to do shows which A ter it was seen that WWJD was a success Cary started going to meetings 0 'the Welfare and Recreation Committee to try to get more equipment or the station. A ter 'much debate it was decided to let the station have a ew hundred dollars which was used for another turntable, a new microphone, the parts or a control panel used to make the station a one man operation, and an assortment o other incidentals needed to make the station semi-professional. IC3 Bruno Urbaniak took all this equipment and seg up a system comparable to some ofthe smaller, civilian type networks As the months went by many disc jockeys joined the ranks on WWID. And while other skills have become antiquated and the rates dropped from the muster rolls, the Bos'un,' has changed with the times and consequently, even today, holds a high place in the esteem of his shipmates. Extremely skillful in performing his numerous duties, meticulous, in the appearance of his uniform, the Boatswain's Mate retains his status as a measuring rod by which others must be judged. Data Systems T echnician-D These are the brain surgeons of the computer world, their scalpel a soldering iron, their booh of anatomy a tech manual. Secure in their knowledge of the intricate mass of the computer s brain, they pluch out and replace the cancerous cells with a deft touch, and with that same sure hand repair damage to frayed controlling nerves. If the information stored within that huge brain becomes antiquated, they recycle and replace it with that necessary for future uses. Already an important profession, the job of the Data Systems Technician stands to expand as more uses for the computer are found. Larry J. These are the handy-,men of the ship, the fix-it department. They are the plumbers, welders, refrigerator mechanics, carpenters, and you.name-it if it's out of the ordinary. Highly shillful in their crafts, ingenious in their ability to repair, they are in constant demand around the ship. But as important as all of this is to the smooth operation ofthe ship, it is nevertheless secondary to their primary job of saving the ship from danger wrought by fire, collision, storm, and battle damage. Traditionally these inspired men have always been equal to the tash as a history of success in saving ships under impossible conditions attest. ' . Ted A. Amrowski MMI Brighton, Tennessee Richard J.. TAFF FTC West B T3 Walker , ,, ,,,,., I, fw ETI 0,Sullivan ETR2 fensen Photographer QM1 Goins Any cruise hasvits memories and so it is with this one. We hope this book will serve as an aid in remembering this trip to the Mediterranean and telling a little of what it was like. This book was the brainchild of LTJG Dan Edwards who was not able to complete the cruise with us because he was transferred to another ship, so most of the ideas should be credited to him. Thanks go to Chief West for his assistance with sales, ETR2 fensen for his work with lay-out and photographs, ETI 0'Sullivan for his photography work, Coins for help with lay-out, BT3 Walker for his outstanding cartoons, 'LTJG Burson of the USS CLAUDE V. RICKETTS for his photos of our return, and all the people who contributed photographs. Not all was roses with our work and probably the single most disappointing aspect was the photos which did not turn out of people who left during the cruise, so I would like to apologize to all those people: LT Harty, LTJC Brewer, FTMI Bell, FTMI Reeves, DSI Sipes, RD3 Nowling, RD3 Franz, RDSN Allen, BM3 Bogan, BT3 Deal, Midn.
