Text from Pages 1 - 36 of the 1985 volume:

As Captain W.O. Stubbs Jr. was bonged across the brow one hot afternoon in early July, little did the crew realize he was on his way to meet with fleet commanders to discuss an unexpected assignment for the Daniels. This initial meeting triggered more meetings which sent the operations officer and an entourage of intell specialists dashing about firming up communication and operation orders which were to con trol the Daniel's fate. nRumor Controln had us packing everything from bathing suits, swim fins and suntan lotion for our regularly scheduled commitment in the Caribbean to earmuffs and thermal underwear for a trip North! It was frustrating yet exciting as tne ship prepared for anything. The word came-we were heading North! Some of us had read in the newspapers the story about a huge Soviet Naval Excercise in the North Atlantic-things were adding up. We had two weeks to finish an OPPE and to prepare to get underway to see how the Soviets do business. In and out of the VA Capes OP AREA we sailed, frantically conducting engineering casualty control drills while concurrently planning the logistic nightmare that was to be our last week in port. The Captain set sail with more firepower and mission support cap ability under his command than any other single unit commander of our class had seen before. Embarked were an intelligence detachment, weathermen, photographers, an EOD team and a helicopter detachment. We would also have with us our own oiler, the USNS PAWCATUCK. Helo Det equipment, EOD boats, extreme cold weather gear, as well as a huge stores onload meant the ship was packed, every space utilized. We needed to be autonomous and self sufficient to complete our mission- we were.12JULY-under way. Training, Helo work ups, and Intell briefs occupied our time during the Atlantic crossing. Bergen Norway was our Port of call going in: Portsmouth England was visited on our return. In between ports, the Daniels operated in the Arctic. It proved a rewarding and challenging assignment.
