DANIEL THE MAN In his lifetime, JOSEPHUS DANIELS was a noted American newspaperman, a.n-,ambassador to Mexico, and Secretary of the Navy. During his eight year span, 1913-1921, as Secretary of the Navy, JOSEPHUS DANIELS is most remembered for his banning of alcohol on board ships, but this was just a minor job in his major overhaul of naval policies. Many of us are familiar with anti-military sentiment prevalent during the late sixties due to the Vietnam War, however, prior to JOSEPHUS DANIELS becoming Secretary of the Navy, the prejeducial feelings towards the men in uniform was even more severe and more intense. Men in uniform were barred from public premises and navy sailors in particular were considered low scum. Obviously, enlistment and retention were negligible. JOSEPHUS DANIELS, through his reforms and new conepts, brought respectability and honor to the American Sailor. JOSEPHUS DANIELS organized an effort to boost enlistment and improve retention. Many of the old traditional recruiting posters seen today were introduced under his leadership. He provided steam laundry serviceslonboard ships, thus eliminating the need for sailors to hand wash their own laundry. In addition, JOSEPHUS DANIELS allowed crews overseas more liberty and organized tours for them, to places of artistic or historical interest. He also established training both onboard the ships and ashore at schools. This training proved valuable to the sailor and to the navy as it increased interest in the men and increased the overall quality of the navy. Other achievements of JOSEPHUS DANIELS included initiating the switch from burning coal to oil on ships, and saving the navy and taxpayers countless dollars by vigorously fighting against collusive bidding on navy contracts. During his years as Secretary of the Navy, JOSEPHUS DANIELS identified problem areas within the navy, sought ideas to improved them, and then fought to incorporate these changes. His accomplishments were beneficial to the navy and will long be remembered. , . v ,, ,...v.....,.4......1.v......-.g4...L..-.....4..-sx4-1-f3-f- u' l '- ' ' H C PTAI O. C. From arranging i transportation for emergency leaves to keeping each and every service record correct, the Yeomen and Personnelmen perform a very necessary job. As their job requires, Corpsmen administer shots, fill prescriptions, order pairs of glasses, and give medical and PQS lectures. Mail call is the most popular word passed over the 1MC, and the Postal Clerks insure the rapid sorting of letters and packages. Journalists run the show in CCTV and moniter ships accomplishments for possible news releases. X-Division's tasks are quite diverse, and its contributions to the safety, health, and moral of all hands is unquestioned. l t W. Kelley YNC D. Tate W. Burns SN YNSA P. Richmond SN O. All along the Way, castles and cities filled the landscape. One of the most impressive sights was the city of Istanbul, with all of her mosques and palaces, highlighted by the Sultanahmet Camii CThe Blue Mosquel. The Bosphorus is one of the more beautiful views to behold. The Bosphorus wound around the tree clad hills of both Asian and European sides. The climax ofthe trip occurred when We passed under the bridge that spans the two continents of Europe and Asia. The suspension bridge is the newest sight along the Bosphorus, is the largest in Europe and one of the longest in the World. STUREKEEPER The storekeepers are the ship's bookeepers and are responsible for supplying each work center with repair parts and consumable items. They are the managers of an inventory of over 50,000 line items. They order, stock, issue, and maintain records on each and every one of these items. Theirs is a complicated job, requiring meticulous attention to detail, for their inventory is not neatly stocked in a Warehouse, but stored in numerous storerooms deep in the holds of the ship. Thus, unless close attention is paid to where each and every repair part is stored, it could be lost for years. However, the SK's are able to perform their job in a most admirable Way. On the last Annual Supply Inspection their inventory checked out with a validity of 9571, much higher than the rest of the fleet. It is through their dedication to service that JOSEPHUS DANIELS receives the quality of service it deserves. B, P3105 J. BaI'I'i0S SKCS SK3 P. Camba I. Connally E D.
