PILOT TIGHT EPAULET ’85 Joseph Kershaw-Montessori Springdale Schools 50 Springdale Drive _ Camden, S.C. 29020 4 Although we are not many, neither may we be called few. We work together, learn together, grow together, relax together. We share triumphs and defeats, frustra- tions and understanding, laughters and tears. We know the meaning of Compas- sion , Love , Faith and Friends . We strive for unity but not at the expense of our individuality. We believe in the whole as well as in the singular, and through our efforts we make others believe in us, too. We are as one synchronized mass func- tioning smoothly and harmoniously. But each of us is also unique and special in his own way. 2 DEDICATION For their enthusiasm ... for their sense of humor... for their love... for their devo- tion ... for their never ending efforts to make the Camden Center for Compren- sive Education (Springdale School, Joseph Kershaw, Camden Montessori School) a possibility and reality for the 1984-1985 school year . . . We, the Epaulet Staff, dedicate this yearbook to ALL THE PAR- ENTS. For with their guidance and con- cern the Impossible Dream of a School this Year has been accomplished. There are better times ahead . .. Parents ... Staff... Students ... are daring to say next year ... dreams ... reality ... Nestl'd mid the pine trees . . . Neath a sky of blue ... Stands our Alma Mater... So noble and true.” It's all working and coming together! THANK YOU PARENTS! THE EDGE OF NIGHT . . . Once again, the entire school participated in the traditional Halloween Carnival which includes the Pumpkin Carving Con- test and the Which Witch? contest. Thanks to the High School and the PTO, children young and old enjoyed every- thing from apple-bobbing to the haunted house. Thanksgiving The Joseph Kershaw and Montessori Schools donated food to make one fam- ily's Thanksgiving holiday season a cheer- ful one. During the Thanksgiving Assem- bly, students presented their food and sang cherished hymns. The Thanksgiving devotional was given by Dr. McManus (Lee's father) who is the minister at the First Baptist Church in Kershaw. 5 Christmas Much hard work went into making this year's Christmas program a success. In keeping with tradition, the high school students played the Nativity Scene. The Montessori and middle school students sang Christmas carols. Special recognition should be given to Mrs. Martineau and Ms. Barnhart for organizing the pageant and to the P.T.O.,who provided the re- freshments. 6 7 DAYS OF OUR LIVES Students at JKS and Springdale did not let small numbers keep them from enjoying their school year. Whether it was partici- pating in basketball, playing football, or building pine straw forts, the students were always having fun. 8 Dorm Life The Joseph Kershaw-Springdale dormi- tory moved back to the country residence this year. There were students not only from the Continental U.S. but from Cen- tral America and the Caribbean Islands. Despite many miles separating their home, there was true unity and friendship among them all. 10 11 Every morning before classes, students gathered under the flagpole, or when it was raining in Mrs. Kniffen's room, for morning assembly. Each day began with a salute to the flag and the pledge of alle- giance followed by a prayer read by one of the students. It was a wonderful way to start the day. Assemblies Different Strokes Riding horses, hunting, fishing, skiing, roller skating, dancing, going to the beach, and out-of-school parties were ac- tivities that kept students amused this year. They were living proof that even with far too much homework, they still knew how to have a good time. 1} Days of Our Lives Besides keeping up with their studies, stu- dents filled their spare time with meaning- ful activities of all sorts. Montessori chil- dren learned how a farm works by visiting one. The second and third grade visited a plantation to see cotton ginned. They also entertained students and parents with a wonderful theater production. Middle school students baked their way through the second semester and sold their pro- ducts to raise money for the school. The High School went on many trips related to classroom work. 14 Cheers! The basketball team worked hard this year though the game was new to some of the players. Murray Craft, the team's coach, held basketball practice three times a week in order to prepare each player for his position in the game. All in all, the team improved as each game was played, and each player, if nothing else, learned how to play a good game of basketball. From row: Patrick May. Warren Elliot. Vickie Warner. Frank Boot. Back Row: Murry Craft (coach). Bill Woodward. William Arthur. Tyler Cash. Brain Walker. Willum Sowell. Fernando Lloveras. Shaw Tailey (score board keeper). 16 17 School Board The Epaulet staff would like to give thanks to the School Board for all its extra hard work. Although each member has done more than his or her share, Alan Burkhart deserves special recognition for his endless time, knowledge and energy which he has put into the many unknown areas to keep our school alive. To every family whose husband or wife has served, we thank you! Parent Teacher Organization The P.T.O. was the backbone of the school this year. They met frequently to discuss matters concerning the future activi- ties of the Camden Center for Comprensive Education. The P.T.O. sponsored three major fund raising projects this year. They were The Patchwork Players Dinner Theater, the sale of fruit cakes, and the Auction. French Club The French Club is a group of five unique, dedicated, intelligent, individuals who have the unfortunate pleasure of having General Martineau as their commanding officer. During the course of the year, it was not uncommon to hear the clicking of someone's heels and shouts of Hail Mar- tineau'' coming from the French room. Despite this drawback, the French Club has managed to express itself by sponsor- ing two dances, and is planning a ski trip. The French Club is one example of how, despite a loving tyrant like General Mar- tineau, democracy will survive to the end. Stephanie Burkhart, Amanda Stahl, Tracey Thomas. Though it seemed hopeless for awhile, the Epaulet Staff, with the help of Steve Kare- litz and Gloria Martineau. managed to complete the yearbook in time. Long days, hard work, much preparation, selling ads, cropping, and taking pictures took place before the Epaulet 1985 was com- pleted. 19 GUIDING LIGHTS Joseph Kershaw. Springdale and the Mon- tessori schools are fortunate in having a qualified and able faculty. Because of their time devoted to the students and school, the year got off to a great start. The teach- ers added to campus life by dedicating their time, sense of humor, and hard work, all of which the students appreciate. In the Montessori School the adults strive to light candles. The Camden Montessori School is: Loving, caring, sharing and Learning, going, growing while Thinking, working, playing by creating, building, cooking and Listening, observing, Pretending Discovering, experimenting Concluding while Becoming. It was quite a transition, but with a little encouragement, all the students have adapted well. This active group of stu- dents loves to have fun and joke around, but they have also made many contribu- tions to the school. During the summer, for example, some members of the high school helped to paint classrooms, bath- rooms, and do other odd jobs to improve the school's appearance. It Takes Two If ever two were one, then surely they. As co-editors of the Annual Staff, they managed to coordinate the 1985 year- book. Cricket and Tracey share many common interests which include horses, veterinary science, and The Thornbirds. After school, both take on a large respon- sibility by working at the Montessori School. Even though the two are insepara- ble, they each find time to express their own individuality. Wherever they go, whatever they do, they do it together. Tracey Thomas Cricket Thompson Double Trouble Will Betchman is one of our two seniors. When he is not studying for classes, he loves to hunt. After graduation. Will plans to attend Spartanburg Methodist College where he plans to major in Forestry with the intention of becoming a game warden. Tony Hayes is the other senior. He likes to hunt and Fish. Most of his fellow students will remember him for his three most used statements: Is it time for break.' . Can we go? , and after a test, when asked how he did. I tore it up. After graduation, he plans to attend college. 29 30 31 32 AAA MOVIE CLUB, VIDEO, T.V. APPLIANCES Your Magnavox Home Entertainment Center 2610 N. Broad St. (Dusty Bend) Camden. S.C. 29020 REMEMBER!
