Making It Click Epaulet 1984 Joseph Kershaw- Springdale Schools 50 Springdale Drive Camden, SC 29020 We’re Clicking In '84 JKS Springdale was clicking, making this year a truly outstanding one. Faculty and students alike worked hard to develop a positive atmosphere. Though exposed to an excessive amount of knowledge, our school managed to stop action and zoom in on instamatic fun. Even though the year went by like a blur, we take with us many highlights and reflections of 1984, a year in the spotlight. 2 3 4 Fran Dedication In keeping with tradition, the 1984 Epaulet Staff has chosen one member of the facul- ty who has gone beyond the call of duty and has willingly devoted much time, pa- tience, and energy to the development of the first Montessori program in the Cam- den area. Because of her generosity, sin- cerity. and devotion we lovingly dedicate the 1984 Epaulet to Mrs. Sherry Sweet. I fr - m 7 8 Holiday Highlights School holidays and activities started with a bang as the entire school participated in our annual Halloween carnival and pumpkin carving contest. The carnival, a tradition, included everything from the Senior spook house to bobbing for apples. Teachers and students alike came to school disguised as ghosts and goblins. As a more serious holiday approached, JKS Springdale took a more serious side. Thanks to the unselfish attitude of our student body, one family’s Thanksgiving was a brighter one. After singing warm, cherished hymns, the Seniors donated a turkey; and the rest of the school, various canned goods to a needy family. Through a genuine celebration of the heart our school was brought together in joy. 9 Christmas Images 1983 This year our school continued the tradition of the Christmas pagent under the watchful eyes of Gloria Martineau and Lansing Brewer. The Montessori and middle school provided music and singing for the program while the Seniors and other high school students protrayed the Nativity. After the program a reception given by the PTO was enjoyed by all. 10 11 Daily Process Nestled ’mid the pine trees,— neath a sky of blue ...” lies the apparently serene campus of JKS Springdale. However life here is seldom serene. Students arrive; laughter is heard; a bell rings; it is the beginning of a new day—a day filled with rushing and cramming and testing. One cannot pass by without feeling the warmth of friendship and the love within the walls of Joseph Kershaw-Springdale School. 12 13 Home Away From Home 1984 marks the first year for the new JKS Springdale dormitory. The move from the country residence to the present town residence was made in August. Housing students from various parts of the U.S. allows for a broad range of interests. In spite of this diversity, the students have united and made dorm life a successful experience for everyone. 14 15 16 Lee Peirson New Exposures This year JKS Springdale was blessed (?) with the addition of seven mid-year arrivals. The students range greatly in age and background. Though they arrived late in the year they have become an integral part of our ever-increasing student body. 17 18 Reflections This year JKS Springdale participated in a vast number of extra-curricular activities. Each student enthusiastically joined together not only to enjoy themselves but to learn something in the process. One favorite program was the Get Smart Program, consisting of reformed C.C.I. prisoners. Other popular events were the Veteran’s Day Assembly and the annual JKS Horse Show. 19 Stop Action For the first time, soccer at JKS- Springdale stretched from early September until mid January. With a schedule that included many tough opponents, the Generals worked hard and competed well. Led all season by Senior Philip Reams and Junior Joe Conder, greatly. The highlight of the season included three matches against cross-town rival Lugoff-Elgin. All matches went into overtime and some ended with dramatic shootouts. All players showed a lot of enthusiasm and were greatly improved over last year’s team. Tip off time!! 22 Aetion Shots Under the leadership of a new coach, Rick Burton, the Generals made great strides in improvement during the 1983-84 season. Led by two Seniors, Philip Reames at guard and Randy Ash at center, and rookie Wally Brown at point, their season record improved over last year’s to 6-9. The General's showed a great amount of hustle and determination against many formidable opponents. The highlight of the season was the student-faculty game with the faculty winning by 3 points in overtime. Philip fights for the ball—and proceeds to make a goal. 23 Student Council The 1984 Student Council has had a very busy year. The sponsor, Mr. Ruckman, has done a wonderful job in the organization of this group. They have been meeting on a weekly basis and have planned many fund raisers such as bake sales and car washes. The money raised probably will be put toward a spring prom dedicated to the Seniors. Hopefully these extremely talented individuals will have set an example for all the students. Members included—Kelly Webb, Janet Smith, Bobby Edmonds, Marie lllingsworth, Patti Rinert, Paul Rogers, Alan Levitz, and Randy Ash. 24 Junior Beta Club Members included—Frank Thompson, Amanda Sthal, and Chris Dixon. Senior Beta Club The Senior Beta Club, directed by Gloria Martineau, is a committee which involves students with a high scholastic average. They meet occassionally to discuss plans for activities and benefits for the school. The group has organized the decoration of the ‘‘all natural” Christmas tree and hopes to complete many new tasks in the future. Front row: Elizabeth Scott, Merri James, Alyssa Sthal. Back row: Tracey Thomas, Julie Anderson. Sharon Young. 25 Epaulet Staff The 1984 Epaulet Staff began work on the annual this summer by attending a yearbook workshop at Converse College and by braving the heat to sell ads. Then it was on to the year with layouts, copy, croppers, cameras, and deadlines—all of which were enough to make these budding journalists wonder why anyone invented the school yearbook. However, once the final result came in, they knew that the joy was greater than the pain in creating the best Epaulet ever. Front row: Randy Ash (photographer), 2nd row: Elizabeth Scott (co-editor). They are always available in a snap to meet the needs of the student academically as well as personally. The process is never an easy task, but with sincere dedication they have created perfect prints.” Beverly Anderson Edmund Ball Louise Barnhart Bonnie Bella Will Bennet Caroline Blair Bryan Blitch Susan Brimmer Betsy Burton Rick Burton Charlene Caid Darlene Cantey Robert Carlton 30 Lee Chapman Lee Child Alice Clark Robbie Cobb Gail Cooper Murray Craft MOTO MOT AVAIL Attf Caryn Feldman Dottie Fullerton Mike Gainey Diane Gaskins Louise Grant Nancy Harmon Wayne Holden 31 Patricia Reed William Ruckman Cookie Sprouse Darren Sweet Sherry Sweet Nancy Teddy Margaret Thomas Mary Thompson Thelma Warren Linda Webb Lynn Welborne Ella Wells Andrew Williams 33 Miniatures The Camden Montessori School is a program which strives to cultivate each child’s own natural desire to learn as he she explores information from the prepared environment. The staff all hold Masters degrees in education and all classes are on the self-contained format with class size usually limited to 8 pupils. Though reading and math are the usual main subject areas that are remediated at Springdale, the areas of language arts, social studies, spelling, science, writing and speech are also remediated where weaknesses occur. Any student who is on grade level in any subject area will receive regular class instruction(be mainstreamed) in that area at Joseph Kershaw School while also receiving remediation in weak areas at Springdale. The new abilities learned will enable the student to better make up missed subject matter and academic skills and more easily learn new skills on a higher level. Each student’s academic program is carefully geared to fit that student’s individual needs. The children not only gained much valuable knowledge, but also many happy memories. The field trips have included visits to Historic Camden, the Columbia Musem, and the Planetarium. Many projects allowed the students to actually build and view Indian and Pilgrim villages and plantations. Despite their many antics, these special grades have worked together to create a lower student body in which each child is ... a unique individual . 1st Grade Issac Ball Andy Beckman Shawn Bryan Kelly Burroughs Sara Catherine Clyburn Dennis Fullerton Benjamin Gunter Stephen Kelly Richard Parker Elliot Schwartz Kelli West Nealy West Katie Winkel 2nd Grade Burwell Boykin Matthew Chidley Nicole Horton Ken Kelly 42 4th Grade Hamilton Boykin Johnny Buckley Doug Kirkland Quentin Watts Shannon Webb 5th Grade Chris Beckman Tina Fields Melody Hinson Mandy James Kirk Kirkland Kevin Miles Kelly Webb 43 6th Grade Chan Alexander Margaret Barnhart Patrick Gamble Robert Hayes Jon Mears Chris Rabon Janet Smith 7th grade Chris Dixon Ann Marie Illingworth Geoffrey Threat 8th grade William R. Yet, through all of their strenuous labors they managed to have a good time too. Noted for their great energy, these students have become a positive force in our school. They were also recognized as our local fashion experts, sporting everything from boots to designer jeans; and their venacular has become notorious with such popular expressions as'Man, you're a do-wrong!” Chris Gamble William Rodgers Amanda Stahl Bryan Young 10th grade Javier Guerra Keith Hodge Spencer McDonald Patti Reinert Paul Rogers Quent Rokusek Alyssa Stahl Tracey Thomas Cricket Thompson 11th grade Joe Conder Stephanie Lamphier Anonymous 45 Photo Finish Seniors All right, spread 'em boys! Seven unique individuals compose the 1984 Senior class, a group of students who are noted for their mischief as well as their earnestness. Despite their diversity, the nine brief months together have created a bond which is shared through the quarrels and jokes, laughter and tears. Seniors '84 may not be picture perfect,” but they are truly an original. It began one quiet morning ... 46 They never believed we would actually do it. Julie Anderson Although this is Julie's first year at JKS she has quickly become an integral part of the Senior class. At first glance she may seem quiet and shy, yet it is soon apparent that she is anything but. Julie has been a member of the Epaulet Staff and even though this is her first year, she has done a terrific job. Randy Ash Randy served faithfully this year as our '84 Epaulet Staff photo-editor. Since his arrival last year he has been widely noted for his interest in photography and computers. Randy, always ready to lend a hand, has repaired everything from typewriters to Christmas lights. For now Randy's plans include broadening his computer skills at technical school. 47 Merri James This being Merri’s thirteenth year at JKS, she one of the longest-time members of the Senior class. As the class' informant, she keeps everyone up to date on the local news. Although her job has kept her busy, Merri has managed to be involved in many activities and to remain a top student. Despite this busy schedule, she still finds time to watch Knot’s Landing”, her favorite show, and to listen to the Doc”. Alan Levitz A-L-A-N has been a special part of the Senior class. Upon his arrival last winter, the high school has been constantly entertained by his dry sense of humor and numerous tales of Miami. Alan enjoys a number of diverse interests ranging from skiing to computers. 48 Philip has been the Senior class' all- round-jock, excelling in both soccer and basketball. His friendly personality and witty remarks have made him a favorite of everyone. Having many interests, ranging from hunting to skiing, Philip has been a true asset to the class of '84. Elizabeth Scott Elizabeth is best known for her straight A average and sweet disposition. “Rockin Liz,” as her best friends affectionately call her, served as co-editor of this year's Epaulet. Although she appears to be quiet and serene, all of her classmates know the TRUE Elizabeth. 49 Sharon Young Having been here since kindergarten, Sharon is one of our “oldest students. She has been co-editor of the Epaulet as well as being involved in many other community activities. Sharon is famous for her well crafted hobby of talking and her amusing ancedotes have been source of lecture- relief”.
