EPAULET 1983 Joseph Kershaw— Springdale Schools 50 Springdale Dr. Camden. SC. 29020 k £1 Together We Are Something 2 3 Dedication Each year, a member of the faculty or administration is singled out for having made a significant contribution to our school. Because she has shared her philosophy, knowledge, love, and warmth with us all, we lovingly dedicate our annual to Mrs. Joyce Matthews. Her own life-sytle and philsophy reflect what we would like to strive for: “A philosophy of life is easier to EXPERIENCE than to express. 1 feel I have a definite philosophy, but it is open-ended: it changes as one grows older and wiser. One very important work in my philosophy is “joy.” To have each day possess its particular joy implies a basis of faith, love, and laughter. These are things that are nourished with-in and dominate over circumstances.” 4 Together We All Go Forward Seniors Stan Williams Stan the Man ... always up to something ... crazy ... Standard ... loves to party ... Johnnie Walker's little buddy ... Rick Shoolbred Ricky Ticky ... loves that yellow Mazda ... tunes are the max ... “Oh, shutup, Billy!” ... Randy Ash Megahurt . .. never drives under 70 mph ... Well, Mrs. Martineau, in answer to your question” ...” The Alabama Bum” ... 6 High School If one were to walk into the boisterous classrooms of the High School, one would be greeted by ... “Wake up, George Satterfield! ... How you doin’. Little Phil? ... True, man, true ... Well ... Hey, Jo Bo Kokomo ... Shut up, Wobak ... ” Though mischievous now, these eager students do have greater plans for the future. 7 Eighth Seventh The combining of the seventh and eight grades this year was an exciting experience for each class, and rumor has it that some life- long friendships have been made. Love and humor express what these young people are all about. Conversation ranges from the latest rock to the “Craft Age”. These independent scholars are being prepared for laborious duties in high school, and their response to exams was, “Like barf me out the door. 8 Chris Gamble Jennifer Goff April Kennington Kris Kilpatrick Kelly Lewis William Rogers Alyssa Stahl Amanda Stahl Tracey Thomas Frank Thompson Bryan Young 9 Sixth Fifth Even though the fifth and sixth grade is a very small class, it is a very special one. The children in Mrs. Matthews’ class are often referred to as the “little angels,” although the rest of us do NOT understand why ... J 10 Chris Rabon Trey Thomas Geoffrey Threatt Brian Kirkland II Fourth Third Mrs. Quick definitely enjoys her work with the children even though they are very talkative. Needless to say, they are very bright children- especially when it comes to discussions! The themes of the first and second graders are: Who Am I? Where Am I going? And What Am I Doing? They have done a great deal of creative writing and a number of science experiments. 15 Sringdale School Bo Edens Brian High Keith Hodge Byron Wilde William Arthur Warren Brooks Jeff Chester Sometimes called the “oldest class, Mr. Blitch's group presently consists of high school age young men in various stages of development and academic levels. Most of the students have different goals, such as attaining a G.E.D. certificate, entering J.K.S., their hometown high school or another boarding school. All in all, they arc a “mixed bag which is constantly changing. 16 Although an easy atmosphere settles upon the Krolewicz classroom, much work gets accomplished there. Mornings are a time of seriousness, for this is when “Krolo” reads his paper and passes out everyone’s folders which contains the work for the day. The thing Mr. Krolewicz most enjoys about teaching is watching a student understand a concept for the first time. 17 The atmosphere in Mr. Ball’s classroom reflects his philosophy: “If you come to my class, be prepared to work hard ... I'll push you to your limit and beyond. I’ll challenge you to make accomplishments you never dreamed possible ... I care about you and know what you are going to have to face in life. That is why I make you work and demand so much of you now ... to make it easier for you later.”. Mrs. Barnhart’s class is “A very consistent and structured environment where my students have a complete understanding from the beginning what is expected of them in order to progress at an adequate pace. My students arc my special family in that I care so much about their needs indivdually. Their progress, academically and emotionally, is of utmost importance to me. 4 19 Miss Welborn's most oft repeated word? Work, Work, W'ork! Which We Do—and which is paying off— I'm awfully proud of my class. The second most repeated word? Love It! 20 Mrs. Reed is a teacher who is very sensitive to her students’ needs. Every minute of the day is spent towards enriching each child's academic level and emotional growth. One blessing experienced by Mrs. Reed everyday is the smile on a child's face after sucess has been achieved. David Beard Jay Burris Robert Igar Chris Kulis Brian Patric May Maribcl Parras Patti Rogers Herman Weiss 21 “Our class is full of personalities; for instance we have “Captain America,”“The Bird, Tig Pen,' and many others. Each has his own style. They are all special and have become very special to me. I wish for them success and the many rewards hard work can bring. 22 James Ball Trey Bragdon Curl Hill James Mattmiller Hard work is the keynote in Miss DcKay's room. The children, however, don't mind because they learn and know how much Miss DeKay loves them. 23 The transitional first grade of Mrs. Sternberg and Mrs. Quigley is a new class for Springdale School. Mornings with Mrs. Sternberg are spent learning the “Three R's.” Afternoons with Mrs. Quigley are devoted to language and speech development and learning to get along better with others. The man who has devoted his energy and undivided attention to this task is widely known for his generosity and friendly disposition, qualities greatly appreciated by students and faculty alike in an administrator. He is always available to help others in any way possible. Despite the time he exerts in bettering our school, he still finds time to enjoy his hobbies which range from ballooning and stained glass to skiing. Dr. Mears, thank you for your time. We love you. 34 Mr. Ball, a native of Nashville, Tennessee, enjoys sailing and backpacking. Seeing his students achieve success is the one aspect of teaching he enjoys most. Mr. Ray Krolewicz Univ. of South Florida, USC Mr. Krolewicz appreciates the lights flashing in a student’s eyes when he understands something for the first time. In addition to his career as a teacher, “Krolo” is an extremely talented runner holding a position in the world’s top twenty runners. d ■ 1. 36 Mrs. Kendall McLeod Columbia College Mrs. McLeod, a Special Education major, likes outdoor activities, particularly sailing. To Mrs. McLeod, the best part of her teaching career is the children. And after all the paperwork, she relaxes watching “Quincy” and “Hill Street Blues.” Mrs. Anne Quigley Marygrove College A teacher for five years, Mrs. Quigley has a Master’s in speech pathology. Her biggest joy teaching the transitional first grade at Springdale is to see children discover new ideas. Mrs. Barbara Quick Lawrence College, Bay State This is Mrs. Quick’s first year at JKS where she loves teaching the third and fourth grade classes. Having been brought up in the North, she had always wanted to live in the South and is happy to be doing it here in Camden. Her desire is to have each child work to his fullest potential, and in her capable hands each child does just that. Miss Lyn Welborn Wesleyan College This is Miss Welborn’s first year at Springdale. She enjoys running and horseback riding, but her favorite thing is being with her kids. 39 Mrs. Jenna Knoizer Furman Univ., Converse College Good health, good friends, and peace are three of Mrs. Konizer’s wishes. She loves teaching at the Montessori and believes everyone should have a good education. Perhaps this is why, if Mrs. Konizer could be presdient she would spend less money on defense weapons and more on educational purposes. Mrs. Sherry Sweet University of California Mrs. Sweet’s outlook on life is one of concern, and the phrase, “Be all that you can be, seems to sum it up for her. 40 Mrs. Joyce Matthews Columbia College and USC Mrs. Matthews teaches science and math to our middle school. She most enjoys seeing her students get along and feel good about themselves. Ms. Gloria Martineau U. of Alberta, Sorbonne, Rice U. Though Mrs. Martineau loves teaching, she wishes that Alyssa and Tracey would stop chewing gum, that Billy W. would hand in his homework, and that Merri, Elizabeth, and Sharon would stop picking on her.
