IT'S A CELEBRATION! On March 12, 1937, Jordan Vocational High School was dedicated. In 1938 its first graduating class was honored. To those students and to the thousands of Red Jackets who have been Jordan graduates and students during the last fifty years, and to all the future Jordan students . . . we proudly dedicate this very special annual. History Jordan Vocational High School has the distinc- tion of being the first of its kind to be operated by a municipality in the United States. In 1906 Mr. Gunby Jordan gave a tract of land and ten thou- sand dollars for the erection of a high school that was known as Industrial High School. Mr. George Peabody and many other public-spirited citizens of Columbus also gave to the fund necessary in order to build the school. In 1906 mechanical and textile shops were add- ed, and in 1930 a gymnasium and auditorium and several classrooms were added. By 1936 the school had grown so that an entire- ly new plant was needed, and bonds were floated for a new building. When the Old Industrial School moved into its new home, it became known as Jordan Vocational High School, in hon- or of the man who made its existence possible. In 1939 an auditorium and a gymnasium were added. In 1965 a new addition was completed, adding sixteen modern classrooms, an air-condi- tioned library, offices and storage rooms. Jordan now ranks among the best schools in the state and is a member of the Southern Associ- ation of Schools and Colleges. Top left. Frank P.
