On March 12, 1937, Jordan Vocational High School was dedicated. In 1938 its first graduating class was honored. To those students and to the thousands of Red Jackets who have been Jordan graduates and students during the last fifty years, and to all the future Jordan students . . . we proudly dedicate this very special annual. History Jordan Vocational High School has the distinc- tion of being the first of its kind to be operated by a municipality in the United States. In 1906 Mr. Gunby Jordan gave a tract of land and ten thou- sand dollars for the erection of a high school that was known as Industrial High School. Mr. George Peabody and many other public-spirited citizens of Columbus also gave to the fund necessary in order to build the school. In 1906 mechanical and textile shops were add- ed, and in 1930 a gymnasium and auditorium and several classrooms were added. By 1936 the school had grown so that an entire- ly new plant was needed, and bonds were floated for a new building. When the Old Industrial School moved into its new home, it became known as Jordan Vocational High School, in hon- or of the man who made its existence possible. In 1939 an auditorium and a gymnasium were added. In 1965 a new addition was completed, adding sixteen modern classrooms, an air-condi- tioned library, offices and storage rooms. Jordan now ranks among the best schools in the state and is a member of the Southern Associ- ation of Schools and Colleges. Top left. Frank P. Students, teachers, counselors, and administrators plan classes and schedules beginning in the spring of one year to be ready for the following fall. Students sign up for their needed and wished for classes in the spring, getting ad- vice from teachers, counselors, and parents. During the summer many people work to arrange classes so that as many students as possible get the classes they desire. In the fall, the students come to a special fall registration to get their schedules and check in with their homeroom teachers, as Sandy Peters does here. Juniors Rhonda Johnson and Michelle Lagrand are doing what many students did in the fall clipping, glueing, drawing, color- ing. It was a special time at Jordan — Homecoming Week. Dress-up days, pep rallies, a special dance, a caravan to the game, and deco- rations all represented the spirit of homecoming. School was a lot of work — studying verbals and theories and formulas and recipes but it was also a lot of fun. Students ex- plored foreign countries, hosted fancy dinners, attended plays and heard Miss Georgia sing. Sports eased the academic pains for many who escaped into the world of physical competition, and groups such as Model U.N. and Head to Head competed intellec- tually. Having seen Kristi growing intellectually was to all of us at Jordan High School a wonder- ful experience, an experience which could never be forgotten. Kristi will be remembered as a most sensitive human being. Her acute- ness of feeling had no limit. As we all know, no one ever respected life as she did. She always knew that the world was a stage on which she had to play her role. Her role was nothing but a simple smile, which when drawn on her face, would bring happiness to a friend, a teacher, and even a stranger. Her naturalism cannot be compared to any of her peers. Her conduct and thought were always prompted by natural desire. Her attitude toward every- thing she attempted exemplified her moral values and character. Every step she took, every word she articulated, every time she smiled, was a constant reminder of life, its freshness and its flavor. Sophomores Must Decide To Go Vocational, College Prep, Regular, State Dept. As all sophomores in Muscogee Coun- ty public schools must do, Larry Rob- erts, Travis Lewis, and Rodney Moore are deciding which type diploma they should seek. Their class schedules will then be determined by the choices they make. The sophomore year is especially im- portant at J.V.H.S. because as sopho- mores, the students decide their diplo- ma choice. Diploma choices in Muscogee County public schools are the Regular Diploma, the Muscogee County School District College Prep Diploma, the Diploma with State Department En- dorsement, and the Diploma with Voca- tional Endorsement. 61 Carmen Holman Wendy hood Brian Mouchens Tommy Hussey Marion Hutchison Daffina Jackson Sherikei Jenkins Lisa Johnson Rita Johnson Tasha Johnson Tonia Johnson Charles Jones Nathan Kidwell Kyong Rim Darrell Kirkland norma Pritchett with sophomore Al- iena Stonebraker de- termines blood types in Mrs. Folmar's biol- ogy class. Movies such as Star Trek and Ruthless Peo- ple., ranked high on the lists of things to do. Bowling and horseback-riding were also popular activities. Dirt-bike Vickey Biggers learned the hard way about dirt-biking dangers. Go- ing around a curve on a BMX dirt bike racer, she had an accident that left her hobbling around cam- pus with a broken leg. racing and mud riding in jeeps and trucks also were hits this year. Jordan students were in- volved in some new extra- curricular activities this year. One of the biggest newcomers to the after- hours scene was the re- modeled Bradley Teen Cen- ter. Located downtown on Broadway, the Bradley was once a fancy, beautiful the- atre palace. I thought of you yesterday, and will tomorrow, too. I think of you in silence and make no outward show, Tor what it meant to lose you no one will ever know. You wished no one a last farewell or even said goodbye. You were gone before I knew it and only Qod knows why. Your tender heart stopped beating, your golden heart at rest, Qod broke MY HEART to prove to me he only takes the best. It's lonely here without you I miss you more each day. Life's not the same for me since Qod took you away. Each time I see your picture You seem to smile and say, ' Don't cry, I'm only sleeping, and we ll be together again someday.'' So if you have a friend, MO, a sister as I did, treasure her with care. Because you'll never know the heartache and loneliness Until she's not here. I love and miss you so, Kristi. SPECIAL EVENTS For fifty years Jordan students and staff have worked hard to have special, innovative, and unique events. This year was no different. On these two pages we highlight three of those events: the winter mock wedding, presented by members of the Family Living class; the blood drive, sponsored by the Student Council, and the foreign foods luncheon, sponsored by the Foreign Language Clubs and held for the faculty and staff. Special thanks to Gloria Elzworth and Marianne Jemigan for furnish- ing photographs. Thanks to Gerry Dykes for artwork. This year has been a hectic one for those involved with the Red Jacket. With a new advisor and a new staff, new ideas and experiments arose, but there were still the same old problems and deadlines. The staff worked hard trying to represent the total school community, trying to create an all-new look for the yearbook, trying to express our love for Jordan High, trying to raise the $13,000 that the book cost, and trying — really trying — to create a book you will all enjoy. To those who made this year easier for me, 1 say a BIG thank you. I had a wonderful staff, led by the ever-willing-to-work Jennifer and Aimy; Mr. Screws was always cooperative and encouraging; Mr. Zeigler and Shelia Maddox of Josten's never grew impatient with my many questions; Bubba Newell somehow managed to work his schedule around mine. I also want to thank Karen Gerlach for volunteering to sell ads and Jeff Hardin, who worked MANY afternoons helping the staff. I especially want to thank the teachers, who stopped OFTEN in mid- sentence during class discussions because I needed help in copy or captions. Without you, this book would not exist. You are all really fantastic people, and you are what makes J.V.H.S. such a special place. We feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to produce this special fiftieth edition of the Red Jacket; this book is our effort to show why fifty years of Jordan Vocational High School graduates can still feel pride and love for their alma mater. Happy anniversary, Jordan! 204 Mrs. Spano, advisor SNUISOl wmM
