He exemplified the best qualities of teacher, administrator, and leader in the community. His involvement in Ju- nior Civitan. the supervision of voca- tional training, and the invaluable knowledge in computers was appreci- ated by students, colleagues, and par- tents. Opening Section 3 ft ■ i 86 Rocks The State This year brought to the state of Georgia many changes that will be long remembered. From the establishment of Martin Luther King Jrs.’ birthday as a state and national holiday to the tre- mendously important passage of the Quality Basic Education Act. The lin- gering memory of the seven heroes that perished aboard the Spaceshuttle Challenger will serve as a constant re- minder of the courage and spirit of our American Heritage. Top: Governor Joe Frank Harris has strongly support- ed the QBE for many years. Bottom Right: Representative Calvin Smyre is a leading business man. civic leader, and repre tentative. 4 Opening Section TOP LEFT: District Representative Mary Jane Galor has served our community in many ways such as helping retired mill workers and support- ing QBE. BOTTOM: One of Georgia’s outstanding poli- ticians and Senators is Richard Ray of Perry. Georgia. His interests include better education and national defense. Opening Section 5 86 ROCKS THE COMMUNITY Many changes were wrought in the Columbus area. From the facelift of Columbus Square Mall to the building of Harmony Place to the addition of Parisians to Peachtree Mall, this explo- sion of retail industry in 1986 has made for a consumers' paradise. The addi- tional bridge linking the Twin Cities along with the ongoing construction of the Fall Line highway will help Colum- bus to attract new and diverse indus- try thereby providing new and ex- panded job opportunities. Top Right: One of Columbus’ most outstanding accomplishments was the facelift of Columbus Square Mall. Bottom Right: The completed 185 Bypass joins the Twin Cities. Rather than fear the future, we should anticipate tomorrow with unbridled enthusiasm for the many and varied opportunities that lie with the dawn. Jackets chose from punk rock to prep to express their individ- uality. By adding their own personal touch, students further revealed their personality. This concept serves to earn an income and to help in choosing a ca- reer. On-the-job-training, provides the student with a sense of pride and of responsibility. Student Life I 5 Recreation Students and teachers look forward to the weekends and to vacations. This time provides them an opportunity to unwind and relax. Student Life I 7 Religion In the community, religion plays a major role in the lives of Jackets. In their religious activities, they find that inner peace and serenity. Student Life I 9 Spirit week Spirit week, a long tradition of Jor- dan, fills the air with electricity} for the whole school and community come alive. The whole week is a hum of ac- tivity. Monday was Punk Rock; Tues- day was Hats. Shades, and Buttons and Bows; Wednesday was Disney; Thurs- day was College Football; and Friday was Carmine and Grey Day. Muscogee County, and all schools throughout Georgia. QBE affected the curriculum drastically. Administrative responsi- bilities. teacher loads, academic courses, vocational subjects, and ex- tra-curricular activities were altered to meet policy guidelines, the newspa- per. the yearbook, and drivers educa- tion were no longer included in the regular class hours. Sports 10 I Jackets Have a 3-7 Season Starting the season, the Jackets lost their first two games to nonregion teams-, but when region 2AAAA play started, they got tough winning their next three games. The first win came against Shaw 2601. Going into the next region game, the Jackets were tied with Baker for first place. Defeating Baker 8-7, they remained in first place. In the next game, the Jackets beat Spencer 1-0 in overtime. Throughout the remainder of the season, plagued with injuries, the Jacket Tenaciously held on, ending with a 3-7 record. Basketball 109 LADY JACKETS TAKE SECOND IN STATE The Lady Jackets entered the sea- son as the team to beat. Losing only five games in the regular season, the Jackets placed second in the region. In the first round of the state play- offs. the Lady Jackets defeated the number one team in the state, Glynn Academy. They then defeated Low- dens County in the quarter finals to advance to the final four in the state. In the semi-finals the Lady Jackets de- feated the numer two team in the state, Fayette County. This advanced them to the state championship game in which they lost a hard fought game to Baldwin County. Although the Lady Jackets did not win the state cham- pionship, they became the first girls’ basketball team from Columbus to play for a state championship.
