STANFIELD MAY MEMORIAL LIBRARY 342 S. Spring Street Burlington, NO 27215 MAY MEMORIAL LIBRAK1 Burlington , M. GU FOREWORD We all have cherished memories of our high school years which will always remain with us. They have been a time in which we developed many skills, made friends, and participated in varied school activities. As time moves on we may look back upon this school year as the time when the darkness of ignorance suddenly became bright with the gleam of knowledge. As a way of preserving these memories, we present THE TIGER for 1965. The class of 1965 hopes the annual will help you remember some of the memories of sorrow and happiness th at our school has given us. With a firm beginning we leave our Alma Mater treading down life ' s highways standing proud. George Byrd, Jr. Editor TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration Faculty Seniors Classes Organizations and Activities Athletics Patrons Ads Dr. Brank Proffitt Superintendent It is a pleasure for me to accept the invitation of THE TIGER staff and extend greetings to all who are interested in Jordan Sellars school and the school’s yearbook. In many ways the yearbook is representative of the life of Jordan Sellars and symbolic of the pride which students take in their school. On behalf of the Board of Education and the superintendent ' s staff, I offer best wishes to students and faculty. We especially offer our continuing best wishes to members of the senior class who will graduate this year. Newlin Assistant Superintendent 5 s. % i mrr-F‘ uv W. E. Hall W. E. Hall Mrs. Carolyn W. Greene -- Secretary PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE DAILY ARRIVAL IS THE KEY TO GREATER SUCCESSES High School graduation should not be a final destination, nor should graduation be a cheap defense for any single educational goal. Many writers have set forth ideas which depict human beings on the road to educational attainment, but few have really struck at the real benefits of an education, since it is different in effect for each living soul. Eliza Cook hit at the heart of the matter in the following words: What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the soul. Better build schoolrooms for the boy, than cells and gibbets for the man. I only wish to convey the idea of a progress that is continuous, since the future of any people or nation is its schools. Those who try to implement patterns of culture and education are fully aware of the fact that any educated man, is an educated individual; it must also be recognized that when a woman is truly educated, a whole family has been so educated. Daily we should keep arriving, because we are always arriving somewhere. As Tagore has so beautifully put it, Even the road over which we travel is in itself a part of our destination. Time at all stages of life marches on and we anxiously look forward to the meeting of one much loved whom we have not seen for a long time. How their arrival at some destination thrills us with joy, and how we are thrilled when someone noted and we know not comes into the picture. The same is true as we look forward to the close of each day, its lengthening shadows, its sunset, its stars. Happiness is brought when we have made someone else happy. Many have watched an audience of the first arrival of a great person, actor or actress, as he acts his part in the play. How great it is to add luster to virtue, exchange beauty and build altars where the worship of true values may have honest expression every time one determines to make his arrival, no matter where, a happy event. Now that you are about to close a twelve year educational adventure, please accept my sincere congratulations, and remember, you are always arriving at some stage of life at some time and certainly somewhere. To -- Mrs. Marion W. Maynard, senior advisor since 1959, this 1965 edition of the Tiger is dedicated. Through the years Mrs. Maynard has proved to be the back bone of inspiration, consolation, benevolence, and moral support for the many students with whom she has had association. Definitely a credit to her profession, Mrs. Maynard assumes her role as teacher with the utmost dignity. She performs her work with high efficiency, never forgetting the warmth, of understanding, friend¬ liness, and human kindness, which are all important to her profession. Yes, a true friend and advisor, Mrs. Maynard has captured the respect and admiration of many. For these reasons the Senior Class of 1965 dedicates this issue of the Tiger to her. 7 Jt t ?
