From being handed a map' of J.M. as a timid Freshman, to being handed a diploma as a jubil- ant Senior, Students' lives are molded by life at J.M. Jordan Matthews does have a life of its own, shaped by hands of those who are there to teach, and those who are there to learn. Hands belonging to faculty tirelessly write notes on the board, check homework, grade papers, and pass out report cards. They help us grasp new concepts and ideas and guide us in important decisions. Hands continually push us towards higher goals and demand that we put forth our best efforts. Freshmen hands receive maps and clean yel- low P.E, shirts. As Sophomores, they hesitantely take the N.E.D.T. and proudly flash licenses. Ju- niors mark S.A.T. and Competency sheets, fill out magazine forms and decorate the prom with hands displaying a class ring on one finger. Se- niors' hands anxiously prepare college or iob ap- plications and finally are allowed to move the gold tassels to the left side of their caps. All hands encourage J.M. teams in a variety of sports. The Jets are winners not only because of teamwork and coaches, but because of en- thusiastic participation of players and fans. In- tense rivalry over the coveted spirit stick includes screaming, stomping, yelling and clapping that finally peaks into a deafening roar. Hands ea- gerly grab the spirit stick and hold it tauntingly before losing classes. Hands reach out to friends. They offer sup- port, love and fellowship. Hands mend hurt feel- ings and produce kleenex to mop tears. They share food, save places in the lunch line and ac- cidently toss a tomato slice at an enemy. Their hands write notes and tell secrets about hopeful dates, honors, or worries about failed tests. They help open a stubborn locker. Hands stand by, ever ready to help and assist in growth and changes. Hands as extensions of personalities form a special way of high school life. While attending and after leaving and facing new challenges, we will remember those at J.M. who touched our lives, and those whose lives we touched. We hold the future in our hands. 3
