Q . From being handed a map' of J.M. as a timid Freshman, to being handed a diploma as a jubil- ant Senior, Students' lives are molded by life at J.M. Jordan Matthews does have a life of its own, shaped by hands of those who are there to teach, and those who are there to learn. Hands belonging to faculty tirelessly write notes on the board, check homework, grade papers, and pass out report cards. They help us grasp new concepts and ideas and guide us in important decisions. Hands continually push us towards higher goals and demand that we put forth our best efforts. Freshmen hands receive maps and clean yel- low P.E, shirts. As Sophomores, they hesitantely take the N.E.D.T. and proudly flash licenses. Ju- niors mark S.A.T. and Competency sheets, fill out magazine forms and decorate the prom with hands displaying a class ring on one finger. Se- niors' hands anxiously prepare college or iob ap- plications and finally are allowed to move the gold tassels to the left side of their caps. All hands encourage J.M. teams in a variety of sports. The Jets are winners not only because of teamwork and coaches, but because of en- thusiastic participation of players and fans. In- tense rivalry over the coveted spirit stick includes screaming, stomping, yelling and clapping that finally peaks into a deafening roar. Hands ea- gerly grab the spirit stick and hold it tauntingly before losing classes. Hands reach out to friends. They offer sup- port, love and fellowship. Hands mend hurt feel- ings and produce kleenex to mop tears. They share food, save places in the lunch line and ac- cidently toss a tomato slice at an enemy. Their hands write notes and tell secrets about hopeful dates, honors, or worries about failed tests. They help open a stubborn locker. Hands stand by, ever ready to help and assist in growth and changes. Hands as extensions of personalities form a special way of high school life. While attending and after leaving and facing new challenges, we will remember those at J.M. who touched our lives, and those whose lives we touched. We hold the future in our hands. 3 Words from the wise. if The 1976-1977 student council helped to beautify the courtyard between A ond B halls. ,V ,fi , S! rf ' Q ,f . w gift' - H 'win ' ESG so at 1 7 ' tQbd coumig X 94, tttt ' ftiwst A rw? I thought it was Algebra I! With brand new prestige you came back again, '6Now, it's my turn to drive the freshmen insane! You could dissect a frog, and drivgitg ,, s ,family car, With that under your belt, you thought you'd go far. Doors closed in your face as you sold magazines, And for Christmas that year, you all got class rings. The prom was terrific, but the SA'I s - oh Lord! uAnd I still can't figure what's on Mr. Spoon's board! You laugh how the freshmen all look up in awe, But you still can t decide between 'mailman' or 4law'? Many tears fell and hearts broke on graduation night, Whoever said 6'They'll be the best years of your life, , w right! - Lori Sadler HS I6 Classes v ,U SE IORS - CLASS OF 1979 S tene Watts - President johnny Price - Vice-President Celia I-Ianeorh - Treafnrer Nell Glasser - Secretary Outstanding in academics, sports and extracurricular activities, the seniors provide leadership for j.M.The class of '79 enjoys the senior privileges of going to lunch five minutes ahead of the school, initiating freshmen and having an optional sixth period. As they arrive and leave the middle reserved section seniors relish the prestige of having the underclassmen stand for them. Seniors enjoy College Day, where they attend Chatham Central to talk with representatives from various col- leges. Seniors also have Senior Day, where they practice marching in for graduation and eating cake from the prom which was held in their honor. As graduation approaches, seniors anticipate the turning of their tassels. Suddenly it's all over. Everyone has mixed emotions. During the four years we attended .l.M. we were taught o variety of lessons. Besides academic courses we learned a few lessons about life. The lessons were about cooperationg winning or losing gracefullyg motivation and competitiong acceptance of different opinionsg leadership and fellowship. Four years at J.M. leaves an indeliable mark upon us. Knowing one's post is os important as planning one's future. Our future lives can take so many directions! The signposts and mental maps are there, but the choices and their consequences are left entirely to each individual. What does the future hold? l There are many decisions. Each of us will choose according to individual needs and goals: recognition, fame, richesg love, trust or security. There are many paths from which to choose. Some of us will race down smoothly with the end clearly in view. 162 T illiii 5 W f ' 'i', i 'Eff-lv 73 'zififi 'ii' lfE:Qff i- EY 'i Some of us will follow a wandering path, unsure, constantly seeking better trails. Some will follow seldom-used paths, but will perhaps find rewards in spite of hardships. The bold will cut new paths, seeking better directions and daring others to follow. Gthers will follow no path, but sit in the shade and contemplate Iife's meaning. So, we will travel busy highways, dusty country roads, noisy city streets, quiet paths, crowded sidewalks and lonely new-cut trails. Our paces will differ, from skipping merrily, to running swiftly to sauntering slowly to ma rching steadily to tiptoeing. Our feet will lead us towards our destinies. Feet not only will take us along our chosen paths but also will uphold our decisions. Feet are our foundations and they give us direction. Feet leap over obstacles or grip the soil stubbornly and stand their ground. Feet bravely push forwa rd, hesitantingly linger and stall, or shuffle in the dust. Our feet can take very small steps or giant ones. Their mark, footprints, will reveal where one has been and what one has accomplished. fi, r Y .tgsc p.N'MATs Already, footprints lead to .l.M.
