This year the Jets football team did an exceptional job raising its record from 5-3-2 to 7-3. The strength was in 1 their offensive line along with their storming defense. There were five players elected to the All Conference team: Craig Wood, Blake Siler, Kenny Price, Charles Poston, and Larry Johnson. The Senior Jets have left a lot of respectable memories in the minds of the under- classmen. This year they gained admirable qualities of leadership, teamwork, and determination. These traits will be valuable next year. David l The JV football team finished the season with an , impressive 8-1 record, the only loss being 14-6 to West Montgomery. This team opened the season with six straight wins and three of those wins were against 3A opponents. One of the most remarkable things about this team was the offensive balance. They gained almost as many yards passing as they did running. Also the first string defense gave up only six touchdowns in nine games. Against Northwood the defense held Northwood to a -14 yards total offense. 28 JV Football Gray - 3rd Row - Mike Bowers, Norris Lee, Chris Moffitt, James Taylor, Jeff Brady, Vernon Clark, Greg Fields, Ronnie Brady, David Milligan, Larry Marsh - 4th Row -Jimmy Far- rish, Jeff Snipes, Steve Robinson, Lou Sadler, Greg Brown, Aaron Goldston, Joel Mitchell, Wayne Carnes, Chip Ferguson, Everett Price. They won ribbons in competition at the camp. The seven JV's sold doughnuts and programs to raise money for new gold uniforms they purchased. The JV's made spirit-buttons and victory hoops for all home games. They assisted the Varsity Cheerleaders during Homecoming, at pep rallies, and during basketball season. The JV's were led by chief Pam Williams. JV's Hkeep on keeping on. ! Jordan-Matthews Varsity Cheerleaders practiced all through June preparing for cheerleading camp. They at- tended camp at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, bringing home ribbons each night, second place over- all at the camp, and the most prized honor, the congeniality award - a spirit bell, voted on by each squad at the 250 girl camp. The Cheerleaders sold all sorts of products to raise money for new shoes, pom- poms, and sweaters. They sponsored the Homecoming Dance, the bonfire, freethrow and poster contests, besides many Lick 'Em Days during basketball season. They ac- cented Pep Rallies with skits and dances. They also used male cheerleaders for half-time exhibitions at a few home bas- ketball games. Through many meals to- gether, program sales, prac- tice, and exceptional school spirit, the cheerleaders worked, compromised, and screamed for school support. In the end, four Seniors, and five Juniors completed the most successful, spirited, and victorious year ever. Being a cheerleader means placing personal needs and problems behind. It is solely a squad ef- fort for bringing together the individuals that compose JM's student body to promote suc- cess in athletics. What followed were months of hard prac- tices and good times, everything from running the mile to eating at Darryl's . The hard work paid off by producing the most successful year ever in JM girl's tennis history: Co-Champions of the CTH Conference. Several events highlighted the 1977 tennis season. We defeated arch rival Union Pines 15-43. Five girls were selected to the All- Conference Team. They were: Lisa Brooks, Joan Smith, Ann Boling-Capt., Shawn White, and Sylvia Buckner. Joan Smith winning the Singles Championship over Gwen Wal- lace CUPJ and ending up with a 12-O season. Lisa Brooks and Joan Smith claimed the doubles title and the Lady Jets won the Conference Tournament. This set the stage for the season. The Jets have run up a 15 and 7 record overall and 9 and 2 in the tough Central Tar Heel Conference. In between that first win and the current record, the Jets finished fourth in the Bur- lington Classic and raced to 8 consecutive wins be- fore a loss. This is the first time the JV Girls have ever finished in First Place. The teams success can be attributed to hardwork and good leadership by the captains, Jenny Buckner and Sherrie Gilliland, and to the fine basketball talent possessed by each member of the team. This team has posted the highest average scoring and has given up fewer points than any team in the past seven seasons. Leading scorers were Sandra Fox, Sandra Jordan, Jenny Buckner, and Sherrie Gilliland. Leading re- bounders were Sandra Fox, Sandra Jordan, Robin Brooks, and Jenny Buckner. Each member should be commended for their effort and success. Varsity Baseball '77 13 Wins - 5 Losses After losing seven starters for the 1976 squad and finishing in a strong 2nd place in the conference, no one expected the '77 team to be a powerhouse. The JM players worked hard and finished with a good 13 wins and 5 losses and at one time threatened first place. Keith Horton led the hitting with a .370 batting average and was followed closely by Whitey Poe and Larry Johnson. Return- ing are: Catcher, Scott Perry, Outfielders, Wes Kennedy, Dennis Johnson, and Mark Baldwin, and lnfielders, Jerry Phillips and Drex Roberts, plus a host of newcomers. Last year's team records were good with a team batting average of .292 while our fielding was down slightly at 89070. The pitching department had an earned run average of 2.70 giving up 67 runs as the Jets scored 129. The last five games were very close. All track meets were easy wins for the team ending with an 8-0 record for the season. Each athlete took pride in him- self to do his best and to win not only for self glory, but for his team. Merle Baines broke the old 880 record and finished first in the mile run except losing twice to Huston QNWJ. Bringing up the end of this race was the only female runner Grace Emerson. Breaking old records in the long and triple jump helped James Siler score the most points during the year. Ray Stout usually led the 2-mile run and also contributed to pole vaulting. Mark Williams excelled in sprints and Larry Sales ran hurdles and placed in A jumps. All members did their best to help the team win. With this determination and togetherness the team traveled to the Clayton Relays and placed very high among the 3-A and 4-A schools. 'YL Exuberant faces and conference trophy tell it all! These students are selected on the basis of academic achievement, leadership ability, and extracur- ricular activities. Each nominee of this award must be in- terviewed by the county's Morehead Selection Commit- tee. The winners from each county must go on to a district interview and then on to state competition. JM was hon- ored this year by having Joe Buckner selected as the Chatham County Morehead Nominee. This year fifteen thousand National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists were chosen out of fifty thousand students throughtout the United States who took the PSAT-NMSQT in October, 1976. They were chosen on the basis of their superior scores on this test. Out of the fifteen thousand semifinalists, about four thousand will be chosen as finalists, based on academic activities, leadership poten- tial, extracurricular activities, and equivalent SAT scores. 92 Honors , iv, 4 f'a7 f- . .,,..z ,. Boys' State is held at Wake Forest Univesity in Winston-Salem, and Girls' State at UNC-G. Each person is a citizen in a town, a voter in a precinct, a member of a political party, and a participant in a deliberative legislative body. The main purpose is to give an understanding of the structure of our state government. Delegates assemble from all over the state of North Carolina. Honors 93 it is not a place or a building Ricky Allred . . . Class of '79 Wa1tS to become Semors We are the middle men. Our world consists of class rings, preparing for the prom, and selling magazines. The PSAT arouses our anxiety about the SAT looming ahead. We pack centuries of American History into nine months. The problem of being a junior is the tremendous amount of apathy that seems to engulf the whole class. But most of all, the Class of '79 anticipates the last year of being labeled underclassmen. 49' Class of '79 Andra Burgess - Secretary Miles Siler - President Ann Smith - Treasurer Julie Poe - Vice-President 2 Juniors concentrate on a test in English lll. 96 Juniors Something distracts the attention of Mark Lewallen and Mike Clark from their library research. Time in classrooms is an example of time that is long. It is so long that instructors have found themselves compelled to cut up an hour into sixty parts, further divisible into sixty small segments. This also gives the instructors the time to devise nasty, intricate problems that have no practical application whatsoever to a man's daily life. - Doisneau C5 Beverly O. Atwood - Mathematics O. We never believed them when they told us how many headaches, ulcers and worries we'd have. We didn't believe them when they tried to tell us how much time we'd spend, how many Sunday afternoons and how many red pencils we'd use. We didn't believe them when they told us how many things would go wrong, how angry we'd get, how impossible things would sometimes get, how there would never be enough money. But we found out. We found out how much we love JMHS and the peo- ple who always held us up, filling in our weak spots, supporting us when the bottom seemed to drop out. We learned about ourselves and more about compromise. We learned that dreams are al- ways trimmed and shaped, some- times battered and bruised in the process of reality. We learned that ideas are communicated, then filtered, redefined and exe- cuted through the talents of others. To try to write all the things that we wanted to say through this book which we have given a year of our lives is impossible. We are afraid of leaving something out, something that will be wrongly translated or misunderstood. We want to give you something of yourselves to keep forever, for as you change and grow you may lose the uniqueness of this single year at Jordan-Matthews High School. Though no one, perhaps, can touch or recreate your expe- riences directly, we have tried to reach into your year with both hands and bring you the tiny bit that recreates those special memories.
