l d e ana ady jets rack up two more for ferguson the jordan matthews girls’ varsity basketball team, under their newboy’s rules, did not acquire the winning record that they had hoped for. the shortness of the girls and inexperi- ence of these rules hindered their way to victory. with only two seniors on the team their work and experience from this year should help them in their games next year. returning next year from the varsity squad are 4 juniors, 5 sophomores, and 1 freshman. we hope the student body will support the girls next year. the war dance is on 37 ® swish! the 1970-71 jm track season proved to be most outstanding with many honors awarded to individual team members as well as the jets as a team. among the outstanding individuals on the team were sprinter jerry siler, state champion in the 100 yd. aaah, and 220 yd. dash. siler is the current school record holder in the 100 yd. dash at 9.9 seconds, and the 220 yd. dash with a time of 21.8 seconds. other standouts breaking existing school records were keith jeffries in the high jump at 61” and dennis brooks in the mile run with a time of 4:59.6. in addition, the 880 relay team consisting of robert newby, jackie cheek, bunky graves, and jerry siler are current record holders and state champions with a time of 1:30.1. the list of team honors going to the jet tracksters was long. among them were: first place — mid-south relays first place — duke-durham relays first place — nchsaa_ sectional meet second place — central tarheel conference meet third place — nchsaa regional meet third place — nchsaa state meet with ten lettermen returning for the 1971-72 season, jet fans can expect another outstanding season in track. and who knows — the team might even have a track to practice on this year. what a figure faster than the speed of sound . . . more powerful than a locomotive . 45 the golf pros at jm last year were sydney allred, ben howard, bill brady, dwight beane, buddy reece, lee gilliland, twig wood, ronnie carter. 46 coach sonny wilburn tee time the 1971 golf season was a rebuilding year for jm. the previous team had brought the central tarheel trophy to the jm gym, and all the members graduated that year. all members of the 1971 team were in- experienced, as far as being lettermen. we still managed to be 4th in a seven team conference. our won-loss record was also better than .500. the valuable experience gained by this team will undoubtedly help the 1972 golf team to a better finish, since most players return. kathy out runs them all tough defense by jm don’t just stay there, run!
