PRESENTS THE Sleigh School MINNESOTA 04t Qorokvb Mr. Olsen, the fourth principal at Jordan, was appointed in September 1955. His keen judg- ment and understanding inspire in us respect and confidence. MELVIN A. OLSEN Principal Mr. Vakos, first assistant principal at Jordan, was appointed September 1957. He is a patient arbitrator of our disputes, a strict disciplinarian and a staunch friend to all. HARRY N. VAKOS Assistant Principal To begin with-$Jordan Junior High School holds a unique position as it is the first building in the Minneapolis school system to be built expressly for junior high grades. Since 1922 many students have passed through its halls and gone on to higher education. Graduates look back with affection and hope we, too, will carry on because the rich heritage they left will inspire us to think clearly and act wisely. We now join the hundreds of boys and girls who have gone before us, leaving our alma mater richer because of our presence here in 1957, 1958 and 1959. Queryone met and knew In these pages we, the ninth graders of 1959, pay tribute to the courage, integrity and forbearance the teachers showed while teach- ing and guiding us through English, social studies, mathematics, music, art, home econo- mics, science, physical education and indus- trial arts. INGISON G. ANDRUSKO S. CROW Secretary President Vice president Treasurer and qxoe $inally We flnally made it! As last we were on top with our noses in the air. Three long years ago Jordan was a new and ex- citing experience. We were the little, insignificant seventh graders looking up to the ninth graders with their noses in the air. We were in a daze and ready prey for ttsure fire answer booksii and elevator passes that were never honored. That was in 1957. In 1958 we were the eighth graders, the messy, naughty in-betweeners. We did, however, have a Talent Show; a History Contest; a trip to the Cen- tennial train; the choir, to which we could now belong, sang at Nokomis; and the band played at Ramsey. We also participated in the Minneapolis Song Festival. We sold the passes and the answer books to unsus- pecting seventh graders. Seriously, though, this has been our best year at Jordan, and we loved every minute of it. We elected our own council to work out our ninth grade activities under the counseling of individual ninth grade teachers. We had Book Week when favorite characters paraded the halls; Costume Day when a few zany characters gave out with boisterous gaiety and Iive oiclock motorists gazed bewilderingly at a ghoulish collection of images, tired but happy, on their way home. ttA Night to Rememberi, was really great! Paper sales were tops! We yelled ourselves hoarse at the Ninth Grade Cabinet ROW l: M. Dvorak. M. Lundbohm. S. Crow. G. Andrusko. S. Smith. B. Ingison. ROW 2: D. Bergersen. K. Sorensen. L. Nel- son. Ribbons came next and what a scramble to get signatures! Then, Excelsior Day was a ttday to re- member? June 8 brought us our own yearbook, the 1959 Jordanian, and the newspaper which several rowdy urchins tthe stafD sold during home room period. What fun! Senior H onor Society Next came the end-Finishing Dayeand we are off on a new adventure, senior high. There were tears as well as happy smiles. We thank everyone for making our three years so much fun! Forty-eight students were inducted, Thursday, April 23, into the Jordan Chapter of the National Honor Society. Scholarship, service, character and leadership won for these students the honor and the privilege to wear the pin. ROW l: C. Lawrence. J. Brandvold. B. Lee. C. Rydeen. P. Carlson. B. Grisco. K. Under the direction of Mr. Martens, strains of the old, beloved carols from 111 voices of the Mixed Choir and 70 voices of the Girls, Choir mingled in harmony and filled Jordants halls at Christmas time with melody. Under the leadership of Mr. J arnstrom the orchestra supplemented the singing with stringed ensemble in the lower hall. The effect was one of quiet and beauty. Activities during the winter included apparatus work and swimming. In basketball the boys divided into odds and evens, each putting its teams into the league. Winners were the Ninth Grade Rams, the Eighth Grade Bullheads and the Seventh Grade Orioles. The teachers outplayed the 9A boys, 45:38, in the annual classic. A short volleyball season preceded softball, horseshoe and tether ball; softball leagues played off in championship rounds. Jordan girls guided by Mrs. Katzung and Miss Robin followed a varied program of sports and gymnastics. Bad- minton champ was J oanne Saporito. Volleyball followed with rooms 206, 205 and 229 taking top honors. Folk dancing, swimming, softball and apparatus work preceded Play Day at the University of Minnesota and a second Play Day at Northeast Junior High. Youth Fitness tests, prescribed by the Federal Government, were used for the hrst time at Jordan this year. Long before most of the ninth graders were seriously think- ing of June 11, the staff of eager-beavers set out tgreem to plan for the 1959 yearbook. How could we make it indi- vidual and not leave anything out? That was a Herculean project! We met second periods, but most of the work was done in the mornings at the unearthly hour of 7:30. Sleepy eyed until the Muses roused us to activity there were anxious moments and lazy moments. Don,t let anyone tell you it isnit work but the result is a joy to us and we hope to you also. We leave you our brain child with all the wishes we can think of. A most happy time with your memories. SEATED in Front: K. Anderson. SEATED: C. Eggert, K. Sorensen. D. Morgan. P. Rollin. K. Flodeen.
