Peterson, Superintendent of lordan Schools , . we X i if A N5 LET FREEDOM RING Ni X X X, A As your teachers and administrators, we have made hour Declaration of Freedom by attempting to preserve the implications of freedom in all our planning, teach- ing, and organization of schoolwork during the year. We express an implicit belief in the necessity of freedom in the perpetuation of a social order like ours, and we have not been unaware of the obligations such a belief has imposed upon us. We believe in the importance of the individual in a democracy. We think each one of you is worthy and should be given a dignity befitting you as a human be- . 3, without regard to race, creed, financial status, or color. Consequently, we have used the development of your individuality as a basis of our school activities. We believe each of you is different from your class- mates and that you learn at your own rate and pattern. ln recognition of this belief we have tried to adapt our school activities to your needs and for your individual welfare. ln a democracy, people must learn to get along well with others. Freedom implies that all must obey rules and regulations set up for the welfare of each and all. Page twelve Outside the realm of the rules and regulations each student must have the right to create the alternatives of choice in his daily living, each must have the right of his own conscience, his own belief, and his own mind, and each his free agency as long as he does not infringe upon or interfere with the rights and dignity of others. We have attempted training in these fields this year. We can see from your behavior that we have been em- inently successful. The values mentioned we hold basic to freedom and are fundamental in our form of government. We have tried to imbue you students with the thought that freedom is basically the cause of man, that its perpetua- tion is certain if all of us are willing to practice the prin- ciples of freedom mentioned, and to protect them as well. Our lives, liberties, and our happiness are expres- sions of our freedom. Without freedom as we now in- terpret it, we become a doomed people. As our graduates enter life's serious activities, we ask them not to be unmindful of the issues of freedom they have enjoyed in school, but to express them out in life in a tangible way, so they too can say, Let Free- dom Ring!
