E. E. DEWEY RNEST EVERETT DEWEY was born in Derby, England, in The year O oT I867. l-le passed away aT his home in Sandy on OcTober 28, I933. During his early boyhood, Mr. Dewey aTTended The elemenTary schools in his naTive land: and aT The age oT TourTeen, im- migraTed To America. l-le immediaTely crossed The conTinenT To make his home in Ogden, UTah. LaTer he moved To SalT Lake CiTy, where he lived Tor several years, and Then To Draper, UTah, Tor Three years more. While living aT Draper, Mr. Dewey was TirsT inTroduced To ianiTorial service in The Jordan School DisTricT, where he spenT The remainder of a serviceable life. T-le became ianiTor oT The Draper schools, where he served Tor Two years. l-Te was Then TransTerred To The newly erecTed Jordan l-ligh School, where he served as cusTodian Tor The remaining eighTeen years oT his life. lvlr. Dewey early endeared himselT To The hearTs oT The sTudenTs of Jordan. His cheery smile, hearTy handshake, and pleasing personaliTy soon became known as a parT of Jordan iTselTg and, as Time passed on, Mr. Dewey became an almosT permanenT TixTure aT The school. Q Always he could be Tound in The various rooms or around The campus, Trying his uTmosT To make The school a more comTorTable and pleasanT place in which To sTudy. Even during The worsT oT weaTher The sTudenTs could be assured oT a warm, cozy building, To which They could come and laugh aT The blizzard. l-le was never happier Than when he was doing someThing To lighTen The burden oT oThers. , BuT Mr. Dewey was more Than a mere careTaker oT The school prop- erTy. Though he did noT know every sTudenT personally, he was inTeresTed ,in The enTerprises oT each individual. l-lis TavoriTe joke was To slap some funsuspecTing sTudenT on 'The back, and Then, aTTer The unlucky one had recovered, oTTer To shake hands. Mr. Dewey's handshake, as nearly everyone knew, was bone-crushing and was The Tear oT every person in The school. There was never a more loyal supporTer oT Jordan l-ligh School acTiviTies Than Mr. Dewey. l-le was presenT aT every baskeTball and TooTball game, unless some physical ailmenT kepT him away. Always he could be Tound in The TronT row, cheering his boys on To vicTory. - And now, Though Mr. Dewey has passed inTo The GreaT Beyond, his memory will linger wiTh us. Jordan's loss oT This beloved friend is irreparable: he leaves behind him a spiriT ThaT will never die. We are indeed sorry To lose him, and his passing Tills our hearTs wiTh sorrow. l-lowever, we are graTeTul Tor The privilege we have had oT associaTing wiTh This ouTsTanding characTer. Ten
