Ready and able to help her manly charges in any subject, she still sees that they get their lessons. Understanding, loyal, helpful-there is no teacher in all JHS who com- mands more respect from her students. We cfecficafe this 1947 edition of the J oplimo to our beloved Study Hall teachers, Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Chestnut. We Wish to ness, in this small gesture, our ap preciation for their untiring efforts ' half. Mrs. Chestnut is the patient little lady who has charge of the large brood of girls who are forever breezing in and out of Study B. We love her for her cheerfulness and de- votedness to us. We'll all agree that her post is one of the hardest in. the school, and we admire her faithfulness to it. MRS. EDNA CHESTNUT Page 4 Some snooze - some dream-some even study in our Hall of Learn- ing. In later years, as you look at the pictures, records, and Write-ups, We hope you will remember not only the activities portrayed, but also that intangible something, that, no matter how hard we try, We cannot put into Words. That is the spirit which made these activities successful. We, the staff, hope you will like this, our contribution to your library of memories. pawfifm Efmcffeq fa, fjemflefan Co-Editors fafm Zamfap Business Manager Mu. lam Whicz Sponsor C I ts xenw ,ll an ' ,P M uit, an , o an 'D I 1 142, Q O C -X su fi U 105 Sch L I 11, all XM .C t , SW .. They sit at home Sunday evening polishing buttons, shining shoes, and brushing uniforms for all they're worth. One man in every company wins the striking red and green orderly braid for one Week -if he is absolutely spotless in- spection hour. Next Monday every- body gets a new chance. Every Monday the stu- dent Council, u n d e r Francis' guiding hand, hatches plans to keep us in line. These include the sponsoring of assemblies, locker-checking, and oth- er helpful but unobtru- sive jobs. With an elected representative f r o m every home room, our Student Council is a real sample of young democ- racy at Work. LQTMYNNRT R L SMCKYUMHF BWKMS Y . Just ask anyone in the Music Department and they will tell you about all the fun and hard work they had preparing for the assemblies, games, concerts and the trips to Enid and Columbia. The Music Festival on March 20, 21, and 22 was one that could never be excelled. We all gained some val- uable experience from it. Another big event was the orchestrals concert celebrating twenty-five years of ser- vice to the school. But what really topped the year off were the out-of- town trips. All the music organiza- tions Were outstanding-even if we do say so. And it's no Wonder we came back singing Hail Columbia. This year is one that will be remem- bered for many years to come. hbkefffzioegafncf Violins--Ralph De Goche, Delores Dilworth, Jeanette Elliott. Shirley Schug M155 Lam, John Dlx 'fWe, the Seniors of 1947 -Those words hold a Wonderful meaning for us. They hold the memory not only of our happy, action-packed senior year, but also of all the years leading up to those words. Remember when-We came to J.H.S. for the first time as trembling sopho- mores? - We filed out of the auditorium to home rooms, we received our first Joplimos, and saw the first class day program? Remember? When we came as know-it-all juniors, and pulled the same jokes on the little sophomores, and looked forward to the time We could go out of the auditorium first? Then, last September, We were seasoned seniors. Seniors--with all the rights and privileges for which We had waited so long. We'll not only take memories with us, we'll be leaving them behind, for in our rank of 305 strong, are many who have forever left their mark in all the school activities. We Want you to remember that this is not the end of our class history, but merely the first page of one that promises to be long and successful. Every hour on the hour our R.O.T.C. performs its neat and efficient drills with ever-increasing fervor. From orderly Mondays with shined-up shoes and insignia to Fridays with no uniforms, they are our pride and joy. Honor ratings in every phase were awarded our deserving cadets. Honorable mention for our marching band that came back from Enid with flying colors. As to the social aspect, the Military Ball hit a new high in fun and entertainment. They are certainly a most meritorious department. Page 58 Diamond and Disc Last Row: Danny Vochran. Billy Wasson, Howard El- rod, Bill Freer, David Korn, Bill Dumas, Roy Harper. Dear Diary-At the beginning of the year we were deeply saddened by the death of our sponsor, Miss Haswell, who had patiently helped us toward our ideals of courage, loyalty, and co-operation. Our new sponsor has followed in her footsteps Very capably. We look back with pleasure to our mixer and programs. You need not be an expert to participate in your society . . Dear Diary--Do you remember that famous mixer we had Oct. 2? And those interesting discussions and debates we had on the current events of the year? Let's keep up the good work. Rah! Diary! Yes, Rah! Rah! Rah! We're all cheer- ing for our colorful football banquet. A mixer of brawn and beauty, if we do say so. That most thrilling Fling of the Spring was our dance which ended the memorable events on our social register. Could we have had a better year? Not in our estimation. . . . Abilities discovered through avocations . . . Dear Diary-This has been one of our most pro- gressive years. We started off with a mixer at t'The Dunlop's Oct. 3. Page 98 Sitting in the auditorium as Seniors for the last time at the Baccalaureate Service on Sunday, We are consciously or uncon- sciously saying good-bye to the things We knew and loved about Joplin High School . . . to all the traditions that have now become a part of us - Monday evening as We gather at Memorial Hall for Commencement Exercises, a small realization of the things We are leaving breaks upon us. Looking at the familiar faces of our classmates sitting about us, We know that this will probably be the last time that we, the Class of '47, will sit together as a body. As we think of this, We Wish that We had something more tangible than memories of these years to carry with us into the future. All of us have memories of Work and play, of people and experiences met during our high school days that We Want to preserve. That is the real purpose of this Joplimo . . . to be truly a Dear Diary of the happenings of this past year. As We of the staff close these last pages of this book, We hope that it will provide you With a means of returning in thought to the days just past.
