Coming here unknown to us three years ago, Mr. lngle soon won the respect and love of not only the students but the whole community. ln him we had a friend who con- sidered our problems his own. His greatest concern was for our welfare and success, and he was never too busy to offer encouragement and guidance. As principal of Jonesville High School, Mr. lngle worked untiringly for the improve- ment of the school and of the community in general. He had a high regard for athletics and promoted both local and state-wide programs. Having participated actively in base- ball and football and served as a coach, he considered good sportsmanship of prime importance and always tried to impress his students with his philosophy, which is aptly expressed in the quotation: We do not want men who will lie down bravely to die, but men who will fight valiantly to live. Winning is not everything, it is far better to play the game squarely and lose than to win at the sacrifice of an ideal. We shall sorely miss the cheerful informal visits Mr. lngle made to our classrooms, the friendly chats in his office, and the kindly advice which was ours for the asking. ln tribute to him we shall endeavor to keep alive the spirit he brought to Jonesville High School. N HISTORY As we the Seniors of 1953-54 look back upon our past school life we can look upon it as a four act play, titled, The Fight For Knowledge. Even though we became discouraged at times there are still many thoughts of the good times. The rehearsal began in September, 1942. We were a group of scared, excited, and happy youngsters. lt was an exciting time the first day of school each year for eight years finding out who our teacher would be-the person who would guide us through the rehearsal from year to year. ln the winter of the eighth year the eighth grade boys' and girls' basketball teams won the P. T. A. Tournament which was held at the Elkin Gym. The teams were coached by Mrs. Edna Reece and Mr. Reid Lowder. In the spring of the eighth year the class enjoyed a trip to Chapel Hill. There they visited the Planetarium and the Football Stadium. The curtain opened for the first act in September, 1949, as we, 67 strong, began our studies in high school. We were so scared of initiation that we spent many sleepless nights and the promise of a party to follow didn't help at all. We can now look back upon that day and night and see what fun it was. As it came time for the second act we found we had a cast of 59. With the help of our new principal, Mr. George Z. Ingle, the activity bus, which Jonesville needed very much, was coming into view. It was up to the students to raise enough money to pay for it. The idea of each home room paying fifty dollars was decided upon. With the help of Mrs. Ola Hendren the girls gave a supper which paid for their part of the bus. We began to think of the Junior-Senior Banquet during this act because we knew the burden of paying for it would be upon us during our next act. Curtain time was called for the third act. We found we now had a cast of 56. Our first thought was How can we raise enough money for the Junior-Senior Banquet. With success in our money raising proiects we gave the Little Holland Bonket, May 8, 1953 at the Gilvin Roth Y. M. C. A. The Junior Play, Bound to Marry, was a great success. The thought of ordering our class rings lingered in our minds until the day we ordered them. Then we could hardly wait until the day for them to arrive. When the long awaited day came, we were a happy class showing off our new rings. We were the staff of the school paper, The Jonesville Hi Bugle. We were very proud of Tommye Cheek who made the All-State Basketball Team. Proud- ness also filled our hearts as the football team had an undefeated season, and our class furnished two excellent cheerleaders. As the curtain opens on the last act we are thinking about the annual, which is put out by the seniors each year. The initiating of the Freshmen was carried out in the theme of a Zoo. There was a party that night for the freshmen who had had so much to go through with that day. The Seniors seem to get excited every time Washington is mentioned for we are planning to go in April. The Christmas Queen was started this year to help raise money for that trip. The queen is elected like the Halloween Queen. Linda Reece was Jonesville High's first Christ- mas Queen. As thoughts of graduation come to our mind it makes us happy, but sad, too, when we think it may be the last time we will all be together. As we finish our play we now have a cast of 50. The other day I received a letter from one of my old friends, Dr. Linda Reece, who is teaching English at Columbia Uni- versity. She asked me about the Seniors of '54 and what they are doing these days. I took time off from my position as editor of the Jonesville Enterprise and wrote her a brief report about her former classmates and the vocations that they had chosen. This is what I wrote: My Dear Dr. Reece: In answer to your request I am sending you the latest dope on our classmates. I'm sure you will agree that most of them have turned out to be very successful. James Holleman is assistant basketball coach at Appalachian State. Cecil Ireson and Dizz Gilliam are the stars of the Los Angeles Rams. Jimi Mathis has filled the shoes left vacant by Charlie Justice of the Washington Redskins. Tommye Cheek and David Vestal are directors of sports at the local Y, Pauline Gilliam is the private secretary to the President of Chatham Mfg. Co. Alfred Wagoner is a member of Wally Fowler's Oak Ridge Quartet. Michael Eskridge and Donnie Triplett are Iieutenants in the Army. Walter DeHart is happily married . . . he has seven young 'uns, and 5,000 pheasants. Sherrill Groce finally married her French pen pal and they are now the proud parents of six little Frenchmen. Phyllis Lashmit and her husband, Marvin, live up in Wilkes where they are getting rich off Moonshine. Their neighbors, Sue Myers and her husband, Ted, are in the chicken business. Shirley Winters is manager of Roses 5 and IO. Loretta Gentry is driving a truck for McLean Trucking Co. Hilda Dowell is private secretary to J. Edgar Hoover. Mary Ann Hagwood is Gov- ernor of North Carolina, she is the first lady to hold this position. Colene Kimmer recently returned from New Jersey, where she was a finalist in the Miss America contest. Nurses Louise Hicks, Carol Vestal, and Sue Haynes of Morganton are caring for one of my old friends, Tip Hemric, a teacher at Reynolds High, who recently became ill. I. W. Macy, Donald Mann, and Gayle Macy are teaching at State College. Believe it or not, Bonnie Pardue is still single, although she has really been chased since she was in the Miss North Carolina contest in '58. Skerby Jo Evans has made history by swimming the English Channel both ways-without stopping. Jim Pinnix owns a huge cattle ranch in Texas. Dewitt Shaffner is Yadkin County's largest tobacco producer. Ollie Mae Ves- tal is manager of the Yadkin Bloomer Factory. Maybert Martin has finally captured Fred and is living in Atlanta where she is teaching French. Several of our class mates are TV stars. Ed Evans and Earl Campbell are panelists on What's My Line. Thomas Stroud is a little Godfrey. Donnie Nelson and Glenda Vestal are two of Jackie GIeason's pretty girls. Inez Simmons is seen and heard regularly over the Voice of Firestone. Shirley Temple has won a Pulitzer Prize for her novel, The Vase. Frances Anderson is in the cast of a current Broadway hit. Landy Weatherman is flying a plane for Piedmont Air- lines. His co-pilot is Gene Pardue. Bill Haynes has a daily program over WBTV where he is director of sports. Charles Bryant is a professor of mechanical engineering at State College. Eugene Ferguson is owner of the largest apple orchard east of the Mississippi. His manager, J. D. Weath- erman, told me that Eugene is worth over a million nowadays. R. J. Pardue is the owner of the largest furniture store in western North Carolina. Charles Holcomb is peddling frog legs. I really must close now. I have to catch a plane for Hollywood to attend the wedding of a friend. You probably have learned from the newspapers that Marilyn Monroe has announced her engagement to movie star Glen Roberts.
