M0 TESSCDRI What is Montessori? Montessori is the name given to the dis- coveries and educational method devised by Dr. Maria Montessori back in the early 1900's. In a montessori class, the child learns through observation and discovery, and is aided in his work by the wide variety of montessori mate- rials in such areas as reading, writing, math, biologyfhistory, geography, science, art and music. For the very small children there are also exercises for increasing spoken vocabu- lary, improving coordination and concentra- tion and developing each of the five senses. The montessori is an open classroom, and each child works at his own rate and is never under pressure to compete with other chil- dren. Each child is directed by a montessori teacher who is always ready to support and encourage the child in his task of self-develop- ment. During the 1986-87 school year, Jonesco en- rolled 80 children in the montessori program. The eight teachers were Sandra Cochran, Ei- leen Floyd, Lori Hulett, Carla Jackson, Allyson Mclilheney, Peggy Myers, Sandra Pace, and Martha Sellers. Graduation was held May 27, 1987 and twenty graduates received their di- plomas.
