Outstanding play by Walls, Cargile, and Brock has kept up the team spirit in spite of disappoint- ing losses. As this page goes to p ress. Coach Har- ris and the team still are working for victories in the games yet to be played . Working very hard to accomplish this are our coaches shown to the right: Jerry Partridge, Joe Sexton, Robert Harris, Robert Herring. Brownies shine with victory over Gophers ENSLEY In the season opener, the inexperienced Valley team had to face a tough Ensley op- ponent. The first half was an even battle with both teams ' quarterbacks scoring in the second quarter. The Brownies ' offense could not get roll- ing as it only had control of the football for ten plays in the second half. The de- cisive play came in the fourth quarter when Ensley scored their second touchdown to win the ballgame 14-7. HUEYTOWN Brownies, with only one loss behind them, went to Hueytown to win. Huey- town scored first, bu t the night belonged to Valley. Ralph Brock ran for a touchdown and connected with Jerry Cargile on a 38-yard touchdown pass. Hassel Walls had his disappointments when a 75-yard punt return and a 50-yard race to the end zone were called back on penalties. With Max Harbuck adding two PATs, the Brownies happily left the field with a 14-7 victory. HUFFMAN Jones Valley overcame many mistakes and beat the Vikings by a score of 19-6. Walls led the scoring with two touchdowns, scoring on a 92-yard punt return and a 62- yard run from scrimmage. The final scoring play was a Brock-to- Croxton pass covering four yards. FAIRFIELD Brownies went to Fairfield to meet a team averaging 43 points per game and bound for the State Play -Off. J. V. ' s defence stopped the high scor- ing, and the offense seemed to be rolling. At half-time the Brownies possessed a lead that was established early. The game was very close, but Fairfield picked up a fourth- quarter touchdown to win 19-14. 81 Valley wins two and loses two by score of 1 4-7 An improved group of West End Lions came to Legion Field in hopes of spoiling J. V. ' s homecoming. Ralph Brock had a fantastic night as he completed 11 of 12 passes for 133 yards. Brock also scored the only Brownie touchdown on a thrilling 72- yard scramble. West End ' s quarter- back pulled them through as the Brownie defense allowed 281 yards rushing. The final score was 14-7. WOODLAWN Jerry Cargile, Valley ' s All- Meuo and All -City end, led the Brownies against Woodlawn for our third victory of the season. In the 14-7 thriller at Legion Field, the Brownies scored early when Andy Morris recovered a Woodlawn fumble on their 29-Yaid line. The final touchdown came on a Brock-to-Cargile pass. 82 PHILLIPS Although Ralph Brock and Hassel Wall ' had an outstanding night, they met dis- appointment. Brownie defense let the Red Raiders of Phillips score a touchdown to end the ballgame in a tie with just 28 seconds left. For Valley, Brock swept the airlanes for 241 yards passing and two touchdowns on ten completions out of 13 attempts. Walls netted 147 yards rushing in 19 carries, including the final Brownie touchdown. 4)i RAMSAY J. V. Brownies had hopes of a winning season as they played host to Ramsay at Fair Park. Five times the suong Ramsay offense pushed deep into Valley territory only to be defeated in their efforts by an equally strong Brownie defense. Although Brock passed for 229 yards, the rushing game left much to be desired. In the latter part of the last quarter, Ramsay scored; and the game concluded with a score of 6-0. Season ends in proud but disappointing defeat BANKS Jones Valley and Banks have a full-scale foot- ball rivalry in the making. For the past two years, this game has had a State Play-Off berth riding on its shoulders. This year no berth was at stake, but for the Jets there was an opportunity for a City Championship on the line. 84 Walls unanimously voted Most Inspirational Player § « O Q . © 9.
