To Milton Though plunged in darkness with no hope at all Ever to see again the light of day, You triumphed even against the hand of fate And placed within the halls of fame, to stay Your name. It lives and offers succor now To those who cherish hopes to give the world Some finer thing so that it may be said The world is better, finer now because They livedg and now though numbered with the dead They, too, may live and nourish budding hopes Of some generation to come-And all Because you would not, could not, ever rest Until 'twas built that which will never die. If you can give in chains, then free, what I? To Wordsworth VVhen the weather is bleak and flowers are hid 'Neath carpets of mouldering leaves And the birds are gone farther south Where the flowers nod, 'neath the green foliage of trees Then I may turn to you, the hours to dispel And you lead me through each shadowy dell, Each field-carpeted with daisies blue- And you thrill me anew with thought of Spring Then the lonely hours are few- From your pen I feel the throb That comes from sod and shrubbery green And the mocking birds come again to trill Though it's only in my dreams, And then I thank God that he let you live And I feel it a goal for which mortal may strive Though the path be rough and lights often dim You are an uplifting star and a guiding gem! NANCY Louisa SMITH. Twenty sux
