Deck the halls with boughs of hollyil And who was on hand to deck those halls with holly? Right!! The Special Service Club. Un- der the guidance of Miss Bzduch, this group made Christmas of 1949 one of the most cheer- ful, most decorative Christrnases lones has ever been fortunate enough to enjoy. A giant, col- orful Christmas tree in the first floor corridor greeted everyone as he entered fones. Holly, set off with perky red bows, was displayed on every landing. Colorful Christmas pictures re- minded us that Christmas was not far off. All this combined made Iones students realize how fortunate they were to have the Special Service Club. This club is always ready when there's work to be done, its members are reliable and trustworthy and deserve, indeed, the highest respect for their know-how and willingness to work. Five Kraft points are awarded to each student for every forty- minute period on duty, One can easily see how valuable member- ship in this organization is to a student. Expe- rience, above all, is gained by the workers on their special assignments. ln addition, they are developing pleasing personalities, always fine assets in business. Yes, you can depend on a Special Service Club worker. Shes always on hand when there's work to be done!!! .IUNICR BOARD 0F DIRECTCRS The Iunior Board of Directors acts as a clearing house for Tones student-activities. This board consists of the four officers from each class with the president of the 4A class presiding over all meetings. The sessions are held every other Monday during the ninth pe- nod. The general topic of discussion at these meetings concerns ways and means of im- provement. The class officers obtain questions, criticisms, and suggestions from any student and give their reports at each meeting. The board members go over each report and try to work out an answer or solution to each probe- lem. Some of the specific topics taken up at re- cent meetings were: promoting cleanliness in the school building, organizing more music classes, planning future social activities, and gaining the cooperation of the lones girls in the matter of wearing hats. Mr. Carey is the faculty sponsor of the lun- ior Board of Directors, l-le helps the students with problems and questions and is very fair in all of his decisions. The student body is very fortunate to have such able direction as it has. First Row: Ioan Petruitis. Irma Dittmer. Betty Illig. Charlene Mcxrquardt, Sally Gill. Owls are students who have worked hard for the marks they have received, and in so doing, have be- come outstanding young people, well prepared for the business world they are soon to enter. The officers are as follows: Darlene Rodell, president, Patricia Wulf, vicevpresident, and Betty Lou Swanson, secretary- treasurer. The Owls had one very successful flower sale in mid-semester. The profits of this sale were divided in two ways: a part of it was used for a well deserved party, the rest was put into the Owls' fund to be used in the purchase of a glass display-case, Miss Doyle is their excellent sponsor. A beautiful gold-plated pin is given to each mem- ber to wear the entire semester showing that he or she has achieved the honor of membership. After being in the club two consecutive semesters, the pin is perma- nently awarded to the student. RECEPTIONISTS Qualifications tor receptionists are very high. All girls who become receptionists must wear hats to school every day regardless ot weather, A receptionist must maintain a G average throughout the semester in which she is a member ot this club. She must be neat and prepared to be called on at c moments no-- tice to offer her services to the school. The right step towards being a member starts in the individuals lirst semester at Iones. At that time her qualifications are weighed. lt she is a bobby-soxer or a sweaterflover, the scale will dip in a downward direction, thus rating her low. On the other hand, if she is well groomed, has a business-like appearance at all times, and acquires the daily routine ot wearinct a hat, the scale will indzcate that here is a new receptionist. This 'iweighingu goes on tor an individuals 3B and 3A semester and the climax comes in her 4B semester, Some make the grade in their 4B semester, others in their 4A semester. The Receptionists' Club this semester, conf sists: ot 34 students ot the 4B and 4A classes combined. The officers of the club are: Kath- leen Barnas, president, Catherine Uccello, vice' president, Shirley Harrington, secretary, and lrma Dittmer, treasurer. The girls and boys Worked together to complete these articles by Christmas. lt took quite a bit of Work, but when everything was finished we felt it was worth all the time and effort Because of our unity and our combined co-operation we are doing as much and even more than some of the larger schools. The only pay we receive for our efforts is the personal sat- isfaction that comes from being able to give aid to the others who are less fortunate than ourselves, The lunior Red Cross is an important branch of the regular Red Cross organization and the lonesites show that they real- ize this by their all-'round support. Every student at Iones is welcome to join this wonderful club. They learn to express their thoughts and points of view, listen to both sides of a story, and respect the opinions of other people, The club members meet once a Week in the library during division to air their opinions about current events. Some of the topics discussed this year were: Education, Taxes, Preju- dices, CTA, UNIT, and Communism. The pros were usually led by Carol Erickson and Eileen Schmidt, the cons were led by Lyle Marquiss and Don Mierendorl. Mary Mortis, Lois Ann Pavlik, Charlotte Ochs, Don lordan, and loe Zapatka were in the club tour semesters, The girls will remember the Discussion Club as the only one whose membership boasted more boys than girls. The president of the club in the fall semester was Charlotte Ochs and the secretary was Iune Meyer, GRANT PARK IS OUR CAMPUS 270 CPEN HOUSE Gay crowds milled through the school at our annual Open House, and the atmosphere was filled with the ever-present air of friendli- ness, which is always a must at Iones. As our parents and friends began their tour of the school, the center ot attraction was the sign that hangs below the clock in the first floor cor ridor, which we all know reads SMILE Many ol our parents were delighted with special programs during the personality divif sion period. They were also pleased to find lones a place where their children can discuss problems that bother them. do--qw--N X The Ionesites' Parents Begin Their Tour A Pause For Needed Refreshment An Assorted Class Is Most Attentive The Seniors Display A Skeleton Outside The Closet 028s i fy.. HFASHIONS AND FUTURES The stars of Iones have scored an- other hit, this time in the lones eighth an' nual style show given on October 28, 1949, at the Fair Store Auditorium. Every year Iones has a fashion show--not only to display the glamourous Iones models and gorgeous clothes, but also to dem- onstrate the dramatic ability of the lonesites, Fashions and Futures, the name of the show, got under Way with a musical directed by Miss Veronica Hyde. Songs and dances added a special touch to the fashion show that followed. A skit rep- resented sorne high school students thinking of what they would like to be in the future and, at the end of the show, seeing their dreams come true. Next came the main event of the evening: the lones girls modeling fash- ions from the Fair, Under the direction of Miss Foley, the girls were able to show oft the clothes to good advantage, par- ticularly since each student at lones receives special posture training in her regular gym classes. We owe our appreciation and grati- tude to Miss Gifford and her staff of the Fair Store, also to Miss O'Brien, Miss Fo- ley, Miss Gorman, Miss Murphy, Miss Hyde, and Miss White, who all helped make the evening the big success it was. Then we meet new division teachers, namely: Maiden-Peaceful Sullivan, Brave Balance-Sheet Franklin, Flying- Maiden O'Shea, Medicine-Man Acres Baker, and Maiden Transcrib-em-fast Bzduch. Soon we learn-um new trails to knowl- edge, trade moccasins for shoes, throw away war paint and buckskins. We quickly dis- cover that we have among us smart, stenogra- phers like-um Fostera Dittrich and Dolores Bentley, super-accountants like-um Cathie Uc- cello, and machine-majors like-um Norine Man- thie, master-mind, As 3B's we learn-um still more-work hard doing push-ups for Maiden Walk-em-right Gor- man, we learn how to walk graceful like deer- only with book on head. During first twelve moons we hold-um big pow-wow called by name of November Noc- turne at C.V.S., and sell-um real roses with fughll real smell. Teachers tell us to speak-um Howl properly when we meet Big Chief. After peaceful summer we again attack school books for last year. Now as full-fledged warriors and maid- ens we not afraid to travel to wilderness of Big Machines Boom, 204. We are confident, nay, even some of us, talented. Lena-Little-Blos- som-Flower Di Cianni make 'all-um braves swoon when she sing Indian Love Call, and everyone want blood when Maiden-No-Smoke- Pipe-That's-My-Nose Gunnesch beat out war dance on ukelele and sing. At Fashion Show, Fashions and Futures, we see some of our model maidens like Shir- ley Pearson, Lorraine Hendry, Mary Pat Hester and Nancy Iohnson put on-um new style blan- kets and robes, then run gauntlet of admiring glances from audience. At end of first moon of 1950, we bid fare- well to class sponsor Maiden O'Shea. She journey to Hyde Park High on the South Side. We now 4A's. Ah! fMe never think me make-um, but me doll. We celebrate St. Pat- rick's Day in-um grand style, with sale of green prairie flower Ccarnationsl, big war dance fShamrock Hopl, and selection of Irish-Indian Queen Barbara O'Connell, Then we have Senior Prom, great feast, our class day lunch- eon, and then we hit-um up Graduation Trail. Now we leave Iones, our hearts heavy, for we would like to whoop it up for another year. But, warriors and maidens, the time comes for us to join the council fires of many Chicago tribes like Acme Steel and Kraft Food Company. Treasurer Ruth Koch, President Sally Gill, Secretary Mrs. Florence Gillen. Sponsor SENIOR CLASS-JANUARY 1950 Well, here we ore ot Iones, where we un- dergo the chonge from bobby soxers to busi- nessmen ond women. When we first orrived, we were greeted by our Big Sisters ond Brothers, who showed us how to get ground the school ond helped us to become ctcguolinted with the customs of tones. The first importont thing we did wgs elect officers, which gove us orll cz chonce to choose the people best suited for the job. The officers 600 were os follows: Rolph Riley, president, Iune Meyer, vice-president, Moirilyn Elkin, secretory, ond Shirley I-lorrington, treosurer. Mrs. Fcigon wos our sponsor during our first semester. We took on interest in one olnother, ond thot meolnt our teachers, too. We learned what the meanings of Smilel ond Thinkl were. From then on, we were on the rood to success spelled with g coipitcll -IANET CAMPELL ond SHHQLEY MICHELINI SENIOR ls it possible? . . . We've passed to SA. It was hard work, but the most of us are still here. Elections were held during' the last few weeks of the preceding semester and our new officers are: President Esther Sumerdon, Vice- President Eileen Schmidt, Secretary Mary Ellen Harman, and Treasurer Dorothy Andrews. A broken leg! A skinned knee! Perhaps you were lucky and just got shaken up, These things could only have happened if you at- tended the Autumn Fantasy, a skating party held at the Armory, October ll, l948. It ended with a bang. Not hard, of course . . . Models, models, and more models! Al- though all the girls in All Business and Bustle Too were not 3A's we were proud of those who were . . . Wearing a hat these days? Of course, you're never without hose and heels or a big Iones SMILE. The Personality Committee has promised that if we live up to all these require- ments we'll have a chance to be a member of the Receptionists' Club-next semester . . . and studying for finals makes that seem pretty close. Iust think, we'll be SENIORS. -LOIS ANN PAVLIK I believe that our 4B semester has been one of the very nicest of our two years at Iones Commercial. In this semester we've all become Big Sisters. In 4B, too, several of us have been given the honor of becoming Iones Receptionists. Our 4B officers are Rita Purcell, presidentg Palma Matise, vice-presidentg Lucille Egan, sec- retary, Barbara Knippen, treasurer. And remember how excited we all were the day our rings arrived! Every 4B walked around with her hand in the air! Our outstanding sale in the 4B semester was our Bow Sale! Darlene Rodell certainly did look cute as Bow Queen-what you could see of her, that is. She was really covered with bows! PARADE As the end of the semester approaches, we've elected new officers for our 4A semester. They are: President Ruth Koch, Vice-President Ioan Shannon, Secretary Sally Gill, Treasurer Charlene Marquardt. And with such wonder- ful officers as these, the outlook for our 4A se- mester seems very bright. ' -RAMONA IENSEN How nice it feels to walk down the halls and think, At last I'm 'top man' around here. Things are beginning to pop now that we've finally become 4A's. So many things to think about: Prom, 4A Luncheon, Graduation Day and, of course, THE FUTURE. Recruiting at the other high schools with Mr. O'Neill really brings back memories. We all remember when Mr. O'Neill visited our lor- mer schools and told us about Iones. Our Senior dance at Lane, The Turkey Strut, Was really a social success. One of our own 4A's, Dorothy Andrews, was elected Queen. Our 4A Christmas Card Sale was certainly a help in reducing our graduation expenses. Only 2U more days until graduation. Day after tomorrow will be our Prom. Sure is fun preparing for that all-important event. Can't wait until that guy rings the bell and I'm waltzing 'midst my friends who have worked with me and laughed with me for two years. Only two more days and we graduate. Graduation!!! Now that it's finally here, I don't want to graduate, I'm going to miss this warm, friendly school, these always-busy halls, and the cheerful, friendly kids that go to Iones. I'm going to be sure to come to the Alumni Meet- ings so that l can see all my friends from time to time. It certainly was a privilege to be G Ionesite!!! -DOROTHY DUKELOW 610 we .szniom ABRAMOVICH.
