However, that must be the goal of each of us as we go through life. I’m not sure that we have totally reached the goal, but we have grown closer to accomplishing the goal of being the best. We have achieved this by each individual involved with the school striving to do his personal best each day of the year. The question each of us must ask ourselves at the end of every day is, “Did I do my best today?” As 1 look through this yearbook, 1 think those who put it together did their best. NHS is a selective group of students chosen for membership based on scholarship, leadership, character, and service. These students are also required to maintain a 3.5 cumulative GPA. They provide services such as working for open house, stuffing Christmas stockings for needy children, and reading the daily announcements and flag salute over the intercom each morning. To start off the year the officers went to the state leadership conference in Tulsa. For community service, there was a food drive and also teacher ap- preciation. At Christmas we had a party and ex- changed gifts. Through- out the year the students go to contests such as the Enterprise Square com- petition and compete in various areas of business. To end the year the stu- dents go to the State FBLA Convention for three days in the spring. 38 Kim Holland proudly displays her first place award she received in Business Law at the state FBLA Convention in April, 1987. Karmen Gray FHA had a very busy year this year. Mrs. Bar- rington tripled the membership and it is now the largest group we’ve ever had. Some of the many activities that they were involved in include sponsor- ing Football Homecoming Week, the Tinsel Ball, and National FHA Week. They attended Sub-Dis- trict Convention in which they won 2nd place in the sweepstakes competition and also the State FHA Convention in which they won many awards. FHA also held a Spring Banquet where awards and recog- nition were given to outstanding members. Our FFA Chapter has enjoyed a busy, successful year. We attended several livestock shows winning sever- al breed and reserve champion awards. Members attended the P.I. Leadership Conference in Oklahoma City. Wayne Gipson placed first, and Mark Abel fifth in the Greenhand Quiz contest. The chapter also at- tended the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. Our group was chosen for the National Courtsey Corps. We are proud of our accom- plishments, and wish to thank Mr. Cox for helping us to reach our goals. Spanish Club Spanish Club is an organization for any students who are presently taking Spanish or have had it in the past. The club activities lend interest to the cultural study of the Spanish language. Club members love to plan fiestas and to eat at various Mexican restaurants. During the year the club members do assorted activities such as making pinatas, making “spirit activities” for the teams and making treats for the teachers during teacher appreciation week. Science Club is an organization which mixes the learning of science with lots of fun. Yes. we had science projects to expand our knowledge, but they weren't hard. In fact, they were fun. This past year we attended the Engineering Fair at the Omniplex, sponsored the annual Brain Bowl, and put on a Health Fair. Monies raised were used to buy equipment for the Science Department. We also played games, had a Navajo Taco Dinner, and much more. As you can see. The Speech and Drama Department is brand new, and an exciting program is developing. An uproarious com- edy, “Here Come the Brides , was produced in the fall. All students in the classes were either in the cast or the crew. Several students competed in forensic tournaments and qualified for regional competition. Troy Kroft qualified for regionals in monologue, while Rochelle McIntosh qualified in dramatic interpretation, and Raina Rose qualified in domestic extemporaneous speaking. A lot was lear- ned from the team’s experiences at var- ious speech contests. Regional Qualifi- ers included Rodney Wilcox and Raina Rose in Lincoln-Douglas debate, and Ben Reynolds and Troy Kroft in cross- examination debate. Rodney Wilcox placed second at the Byng Contest and made the semi-final round at regionals. Raina Rose placed fourth at Luther, third at Jenks, and first at Byng. Troy Kroft and Ben Reyn- olds took second in cross-ex at Jenks. The team also competed at Mustang and Meeker. Newspaper was a new elective offered this year. The class was devoted to the study, organization, and production of a school paper. Their goal was to produce a paper that complied with the procedu- res of a professional newspaper staff. The LONGHORN LIFESTYLE was selected as the official title, and work began on gathering information that would be interesting, informative, and would be quality journalism. As with all new programs, the production of the LONGHORN LIFESTYLE met with difficulties. Without proper equipment, cost of production was expensive, but class members worked to earn money and kept the paper going. The “Teens Against Drugs” organization was started in October of 1987. Student leaders attended an Oklahoma Alliance Against Drugs symposium and saw the need for a group of this type. Members must sign a pledge stating that they will be free from drugs and alcohol. The year’s activities included a movie party, lock-ins, attendance at a positive self-image seminar conducted by Lenise Bias, and speaking to elementary children about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. The Steering Committee was chosen by Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Roman. The girls’ basketball team had a winning season. They fin- ished 18-8. They placed first in the Cashion Tournament, be- ating Cashion 50-42. They came in second in the Pawnee Tournament, losing to Pawnee 43-49. They won their first district game against Mount St. Mary’s. They went on to Re- gionals, losing the first round to Pioneer 63-73, but winning the next two against Washington and Hennessey. These wins earned them the Consolation Championship Trophy. Three team members received special recognition. Shan Tate was selected to the All-City Basketball Team and was most valu- able player on the All Conference Team. Penni Kime and Tammi Farmer were named to the All Conference Team and were honorable mention on the All-City Team. The boys' basketball team was a young team consisting of four sophomore starters. Up against older, more experienced teams, they finished with a losing record.
