Dr. Terrell Tisdale, our own president, is a man who stands distinctively tall in a crowd. He has brought growth and improvement to the campus, and students feel that his administration is actively engaged in achieving the Best for Jones County Junior College. Dr. Tisdale and His Family Just before Christmas the student photographer for the Lair visited the Tisdales to make these portraits of our presi- dent and his family for the yearbook. Dr. and Mrs. Tisdale are gracious, friendly hosts at any time, and their home provides a beautiful setting for various school activities. At Christmas this year faculty and friends of the college were guests at a lovely tea sponsored by Mrs. Mary Dillard and the Home Economics Department. At this time students enjoyed preparing the delicious refreshments and serving them in the delightful holiday atmosphere of the Tisdale's home. - Terrell Tisdale, president of Jones County Junior College. L. Neill Student Center to the cafeteria or grill. Besides the grill which serves hamburgers, hot dogs and sandwiches, there is the cafeteria facility CMorrison'sD where one can enjoy dining in the large student dining room or the faculty dining area. There are also private rooms where clubs and groups may have special meetings. Many organizations have banquets arranged by the staff of Vernon Andrews, Manager. Mr. Andrews and his staff endeavor to provide a varied menu for the students. During the year, in order to break the usual meal routine, they have included steak nights, outdoor barbeques, wiener roasts, sandwich nights for the students to make their own, a pancake supper and a special birthday night with candle lighted cakes. A food committee, consisting of members of the student body, meets each month to hear complaints and suggestions in order that the staff may learn the students' likes and dislikes in the food line and be able to adiust the menus accordingly. Early in the year Andrews sponsored a Name the Muffin contest for a new dish and a ten-speed bike was given as prize. Don Sellers, the winner of the Name the Muffin contest, is shown here with Vernon Andrews. FEATURES 1 sq. r v. s qv- wg x y v q,X -'L . g -. x v n n .r 'e -r .4 'i1f'2-'wE.:.+- . For this marathon, fans kept the ball going around the field throughout the afternoon, night, and the following morning. Dr. Tisdale made the first lap and then presented the ball to lVlr. D. O. Thoms, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, who ran the second lap. Some ran for hours, others only half a lap, but enthusiasm remained high and they kept up its restless tour around the field until kick-off time. The longest run was made by Wil- liam Kelly, who ran eight miles non-stop. The BSU were the most spirited and the Law Enforcement group made it a family affair. ik H+' - .X I V' , ! 4' Rx k GROUPS R O U P S Y ff-vw! . From this group the students cast their votes for three girls. This gave the Student Council the top twelve girls who are pictured in our features section. The large crowd attending the pageant was enteretainecl by Southern Exposure, the song and dance team from USM. Jamie McAlpin, Editor of the Lair, was moderator of the pageant. From the Top Twelve girls, judges selected Jencie Moss as Most Beautiful and four other girls as runners-up. The Lair presented all the girls with a gold pendant and roses were given to the girls chosen by thejudges. Also during quarter break, Mrs. Colleen Ford and Miss Lona Bassett, with four students on the Lair staff, Jamie McAlpin, Lair Editor, Teresa Boleware, Fred Britton, and Neil Flussell traveled to Dallas as guests of Taylor Publishing Co., who prints the JCJC yearbook. The group stayed at the Registry which is in the heart of Dallas. A representative of the Public Fielations Dept. conducted a tour of the plant tracing all the different steps and phases that go into the making and printing of a yearbook from the time the pictures and layout pages arrive at the plant until they are a finished page in the book and the book is sewn together. The delicate and expensive computerized machines, many of which were set apart by enclosed glass to protect them from moisture and dust, were fascinating to see. Working with the Art Director, the Lair staff designed the cover for the i978 Lair, and the group was entertained at several elegant and quaint restaurants. One day was spent shopping and sightseeing also. Among the new things the RADlONlAN has added since it expanded to 12 pages an issue are a faculty news section, two advice columns, and better sports coverage. The better sports coverage is the work of Editor Rebecca Batcliff, who travels with the band during football season and is the official score keeper for the basketball teams. Also this year coverage of intramural sports was wider. One of the advice columns, What To Do When, written by Karen Hin- ton, offers advice on practical topics like dating and living with single par- ents. The other column is Dear Clabigailf' a satirical collection of letters pertaining to life at JCJC. The writer is a ghost writer for Clabigail Ann Turen Calso known as C.A,T.J a model after Abigail Van Buren, whose Dear Abby column is nationally known. Can man as we know him survive? What must he forfeit and change, and how can sci- ence and technology comply with the demands of ethics. We are told that this is :ivilization's greatest challenge ever. ls it too late to change? A radically different world may be science and technology's answer to these questions, can life remain i eaningful in it, and can man cope with its possibly unpleasant alternatives? Will an at last learn that he must live harmoniously with his environment? 5 Science and technology will control man in whatever the future's world will be. l'oday's man, foreseeing a dire world without energy, food, water and other vital resources, hopes the benefits of science and technology will be wisely chosen. Regardless of one's pursuit, these will directly effect man's moral, ethical, social, and financial decisions. This year's Phi Theta Kappa honors program is studying issues governing man's coping with the future. This theme was chosen to make Phi Theta Kappans aware of the beauty of science and technology, and their awesome potentials for good and ill already present with man. Throughout the year chapters will explore this theme in interdisciplinanary programs and assess future science's effects on man. There is training for you through Vocation Technical Programs. Vocational education provides more return for dollar invested than any other form of education. This return is good for the economy as well as the student. It often takes the handicapped person off the welfare roll and places him on the tax roll. Vocational education has grown rapidly to provide more work-relevant education to more students to progress at their own pace. This is especially true of programs geared to training the handicapped. More career information is needed for the public as well as for high school students, what a career entails, the kind of life it offers, the preparation and skills needed to enter the field, and projected employment opportunities. Providing such career information is iust one of the purposes of the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, VICA, a national organization for secondary, and post secondary students enrolled in Vocational programs. Understanding the functions of labor and management organizations, promoting high standards in work ethics, craftmanship, scholarship, safety, and helping stu- dents to develop leadership qualities through civic, educational and vocational activities are among the goals of VICA.
