Text from Pages 1 - 224 of the 1988 volume:

OPENING 3 ‘A community is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm.’’ HENRIE IBSEN “Dear Editor, We, the proud students of JCHS are very much interested in the support of a school bond referendum for im- proving the educational opportuni- ties for the children of Jones County and hope that our citizens are as well. We feel though that most of the adults of Jones County who do not go to the school everyday cannot vi- sualize the problems of the school and therefore, we need to bring this forward so that we may get the sup- port of both young and old adults.” This paragraph from a letter by Ke- cia M. Woods, senior, to the editor of the Jones County News illustrates the presence of a strong student- community bond. The resulting YES vote to a new high school further strengthened that bond. 4 OPENING 1. Cecil Patterson shows patri- otism and dedication in voting yes for the bond issue. 2. Jones County parent takes time out of a busy schedule to show support. 3. Local citizens line up to vote in the school gym. 4. September 29, 1987 is a busy day for the voting machine. DILIGENCE “Diligence is the mother of good fortune.’ MI- GUEL DE CERVANTES To be diligent is to work hard. To work hard is to be successful. Suc- cess and diligence go hand in hand in every step of life, whether you teach or are taught. Sometimes we are required to do more than we think we are able. That extra effort after class, at the playing field, and on the job reap emotional and financial benefits. The effect of diligence spreads out- ward like the ripple in a lake. That first small effort grows and grows into a big accomplishment, and the one who strives often, influences oth- ers to work harder, too. 1. Tiffany Harrelson keeps on working diligently after En- glish class. 2. Lunchroom personnel work hard to fill youthful appetites. 3. Linton Jordan takes time out to entertain at a Spirit club meeting. 4. 1988 sees that watches serve not only as time-pieces, but also as fashion statements. 6 OPENING SPIRIT “IT see you stand like greyhounds in the slips ... Follow your spirit. ...”’ WIL- LIA M 1. Bryan Tompkins, JCHS quarterback, finally takes a SHAKESPEARE break from his busy schedule. 2. LaJuana Daniel and Tracy An aura that exudes even to the out- Bloodworth smile with pride er most limits of the school, spirit is with the regional victory be- like a contagious fever for which hind them. there is no cure. This undying spirit touches all, making us one. The school becomes a massive chain, and every person contributes to form a link. The soul of the school is bared when the Greyhounds of any sport come onto the field or court. From the noisy bleachers, to the quietness of an empty classroom, the spirit is there. Spirit is something that cannot be touched but is like a burning wild- fire that enraptures the student body and even the administration. Spirit reaches beyond race, color, creed, or religion, pulling people of different backgrounds together. Yes, long after the craziness of Spirit Week fades and after winter’s chill becomes a sweet kiss of the summer sun, the spirit of Jones County High School lives on. 8 OPENING = |. Keith Bartlett gives a helpful = lift to a fellow freshman. 2. Mindy Moore, senior, tries to get it together before graduation. 3. Art teacher Deborah McMahon continues to support JCHS spirit through her artwork. OPENING 9 RELATIONSHIPS “She saw every per- sonal relationship as a pair of intersecting circles. ...” JAN STRUTHER High school is the time when stu- dents begin to sense the value of rela- tionships with friends, teachers, and members of the opposite sex. There are times when you need to confide in someone. Everyone has a teacher that he can trust, because teachers can be friends also. Best friends are the ones you tell your innermost secrets without fear of everyone finding out. With these friends, we can laugh, cry, fight, and make-up, and our true personalities can shine through. Have you ever had a day when you just needed a hug? A friend or teach- er can say just the right thing to make everything all right. There is always someone to confide in at JCHS. 10 OPENING 1. Mr. Rogers and the softball team plan their strategy against Perry. 2. Mrs. Abbott, Mrs. Perry, Mrs. Jernigan, and Ms. Stew- art make plans for the new school. 3. Mr. Trimnell is concerned about the welfare of the stu- dents at J.C.H.S. 4. Wayne Stevenson, Charlie Smith, Charles Adams and Bill Perry wait for the outcome of the bond issue. SPORTS _ From the crowd comes a loud cry, “GREYHOUNDS!” But, for which of the many sports at JCHS is the crowd cheering? Could it be basketball, softball, football, or even tennis or track?? No matter which sport is on the field or court, the fans always cheer their team onward. Behind all of this glory, sweat, and hard work, there is a team united. They must all take a mo- ment of silence for the concentra- tion that is necessary for the big game ahead. The individual looks to the coaches for guidance so that he can perform to his ability. Through sports, the students and faculty unite. The days were filled with work and fun, from classes in the morning to activities planned for the evening. After camp, the rest of July and August was devoted to practice. During football season practices were held everyday, with games each Friday and an occasional pep-rally. We also twirled for several parades, including JCHS homecoming parade, the Macon Christ- mas Parade and a Christmas parade in Gordon. After a few short weeks of rest, they began twirling again at home basketball games. As the year winds down they prepare for tryouts once more. SPORTS 39 LADY HOUNDS 1987 REGION CHAMPS The Jones County High School Lady Hounds had a tremendous season in the fall of 1987. The Varsity team lost only two games during the regular season, but neither of the losses effected their region record. In the region, the team went 16-0. For the first time, JCHS also had a Junior Varsity team. Since there were no other Junior Varsity teams in the area, the JV Lady Hounds played other Varsity teams. Their record was 11-1. On October 10, 1987, the Lady Hounds won the region tournament in Dublin. Also for the first time, the softball team was supported by a Booster’s Club. The Booster’s Club planned fundraisers to raise money to buy a team jacket for every player. On September 17, 1987, a 30-0-6 Remington Automatic rifle was raffled off after a month of ticket sales. Numerous carwashes and yard sales were also held. The success of the fundraisers, the support from the Booster’s Club, and the team’s winning season helped to make 1987 a year to remember. ee meee ett | ee so ——— Row | — Tonya Gandy, Tiffini Poole, Mindy Moore, Wendy Brown, Tracy Bloodworth, Margie Stokes, Marquita Lamb, Taras Cherry, Tammy Skinner, Jan Pace, Karen Meadows, and Teresa Hulett. None of us could wait until we had what the seniors had, popularity, cars, and special privi- leges. Our sophomore year passed by slow- ly, but our junior year flew. Sudden- ly, with no warning, we became the seniors. Now, as we reflect on our stay here, we feel happy to be leaving, but somewhat sad because of what we will be leaving behind. An important part of our lives has drawn to a close. We've lived, laughed, loved, and learned at Jones County High School. We've made our closest friends, and some of us may have found our future spouses. We've been prepared to face the challenges of life, but not without help. We'll never really be alone. You see, we'll always have each oth- er, because we are united, together, forever as the graduating class of 1988. 1. Dianne Beasley takes a moment from her computer to smile at the camera. 2. You were always there with a smile, Kind word, or helping hand. My Lord, this is so very hard to understand. Hard to understand why You would take someone. One whose life had just begun. The gentle giant who stood so tall. There was no mistaking; that’s John Paul. A friend through the years, just like a brother. Someone as unique as you; there could be no other. And oh what a future; so, so bright. My Lord, I know he saw Your light. He was so perfect, honest, and true. There wasn’t a thing he wouldn’t see through. So really what I’m trying to say is ... John, you’re the one we salute this day, But forever in our heart your memory will stay. Memories have a special meaning in our lives. You can either share them with a friend or lock them as a keepsake in the back of your mind. Students, remember the time when everything was quiet in class and your stomach started growl- ing? Teachers, remember the student who would just never stop talk- ing? Students, remember the friends you lost and new friends you gained? Teachers, remember that special student who stole your heart? Remember that messy locker you were afraid to open? Remember the bitter-sweet times here at school? Believe it or not, we all make the memories of Jones County High. 1. Mark and Greg try to keep the decorations on the tree. 2. Posing for pictures is a tough job and I don’t want to do it. 214 CLOSING ay ® 1. Shannon! Sheila! Goofing-off is not in the curriculum. 2. Emanuel, aren’t you ever quiet? 3. See what happens when the teacher turns her back? CLOSING 215 The yearbook not only represents the student body of Jones County High School, but it is also a collection of memories and ever-lasting friendship that will always be remembered. As we make these memories, we form that “UNISON OF SPIRIT” that is greatly needed. I wish the class of 1988 the best of luck in all that you do. We’ve been together for years and for the first time, we will be going our separate ways. I hope you achieve your goals in life. I would like to thank the members of the yearbook staff for your support. All of your hard work has paid off, and you have a book to be proud of. oe YYL. Atulette
