Parents enjoy meeting the teachers that they ' ve heard so much about. Teachers try to guess which parents match up with which students. Back to school night is a great night for everyone. 28 CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES 29 — THE STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBERS — HARD AT WORK TO PROMOTE SCHOOL SPIRIT This year the Student Council revitalized Dayton spirit by bringing back the cherished November Fall Festival. During this fun-filled week, the Student Council sponsored a very successful hall decorating contest and pep rally. In February, the Student Council also ran a Valentine ' s Day Lip-Synch Dance. In addition, the Student Council also brought a proposal before the Board of Education calling for reinstatement of senior exemptions from final exams, and spearheaded a pro- gram which would provide photo identification cards for all students of the regional district. The Student Council is also planning to hold a talent show for its spring function. In order to be a member of this distinguished group, students must achieve at least a 3.5 grade point average, and must demonstrate leadrship, character, scholarship, and service to others. Under the leadership of President Nathaniel Zoneraich, Vice-President Janet Wilson, Secretary Gregory Saliceti, and Treasurer Monica Magee, the club works to uphold the tradition of academic excellence. Ms. Anita Tedesco and Mrs. (Jna Mellon aid in the selection of the students and serve as advisors for the club. 31 WHAT IS MELOPOEIA? STUDENT WRITERS HAVE THE ANSWER! Each year a select group of interested students produce Dayton ' s annual literary magazine, Melopoeia. The staff opens its doors to any submissions that students wish to contribute to Dayton ' s most prestigious literary journal. Careful consideration is taken in the evaluation of student writings. All genres are usually represented in the myriad of submissions the magazine staffers are compelled to review. Ultimately, a literary masterpiece of student writ- ings is completed — and another Melopoeia hits the Top Right: Alison Dorlen is shocked to read that Buckwheat is dead! This year ' s officers were: President Charlotte Jaffe; Vice President Preeti Singh; Treasurer Jason Poindexter; and Secretary Richard Hausman. The club participated in many activities to benefit others. Such activities included Food Banks, a Bowl-a-Thon for Leukemia, library clean-ups, and volleyball games to raise money for a girl dying of a liver disorder. All Key Club members should be proud of their success in aiding the community and proving true this year ' s theme For Friendship ' s Sake. 33 EXECUTIVE SEARCH CLUB SHARPENS STUDENTS FOR BUSINESS Mr. Rossi ' s Executive Search Club is composed of students from the Accounting II class. During the year, the club takes field trips to observe financial operations of businesses. The activities include visits to the New York Stock Exchange, com- munity services, fund raisers, and school displays. The course enables students to learn about successful and effective business techniques and, at the same time, have fun. 34 KEY CLUBBERS AID LIBRARY In an effort to send Mrs. Ruffley home ear- ly one night, Key Club- bers took time out to put time into the I.M.C. 35 DAYTON JOURNAL PRINTS A HOT FRONT PAGE. Things have changed, but the Journal still puts out informative, en- tertaining articles, photos, editorials and surveys. The Supreme Court decision to allow administrative monitoring and editing of possibly harmful material did not put a damper on the Journal ' s pro- duction. Under the direction of Mrs. Kendler, chief editor Eric Weinstein and other editors Matt Zucker, Andrea Stein, Jeff Sumner, Matt Swarts, Thorn Karamus, Greg Saliciti, Carl-Christian Jackson, Lynne Dahmen and Business manager Josh Brinen, the Journal has produced many interesting articles this year. On Wednesdays after school in GR$, interested artists meet and cultivate their talents in drawing and painting. Many of the art club members desire to con- tinue on with their talents and ma- jor in some aspect of art in college. Through the club, students, along with their advisor, Mr. Brodman, discuss each others works and supply constructive criticism. All artists and students who are in- terested in Art are invited to at- tend the meetings and improve on their artistic abilities. 38 STUDENT AUXILIARY GREETS ALL WITH A SMILE - ' Wti 1  (i I i 1 l T ! The league is comprised of students in Bi- ology, Chemistry and Physics classes who all compete in area science tests. Mrs. Shanahan, Science supervisor, is the advisor of the club and is responsible for arranging the different competitions and tests. Every month Dayton students get together with other schools and compete in their specific area of sci- ence. In this league, students are able to sharpen their skills and apply their in- terests and abilities. The members of the Science League have proven them- selves to be Daytons top students. 40 DAYTON STUDENTS STAR ON TELEVISION Traditionally, interested Dayton students have participated in the TV-3 affiliated Challenge contest — and traditionally, Dayton Challenge teams have done exceptionally well in the heat of competition. This year, however, the trivia wheel took a turn in the opposite direction, as Dayton was chosen to compete in the select New Jersey Rutgers Bowl — an elite contest for educated youths. Dayton ' Bowlers ' Greg Saliceti, Mike VonDerLinn, Ted Roth, Scott Oliver, and Richard Houseman fared well for our grand old school. In the preliminary round of competition, our enthusiastic squad beat fiercesome Whippany Park by a margin of 505 to 285. In the next round, Dayton proved itself again, romping obviously-inferior Point Pleasant Beach with a fortuitous final score of 540-150. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end — and our Bowlers proved no exception. They were eliminated by a very lucky but motley crew from Scotch Plains in the quarterfinals of the State Championship. Mr. Fox, the faculty-advisor and skipper of the Dayton crew, nonetheless, was extremely pleased with this year ' s fine minds. 41 LE CERCLE FRANCAIS: UNE BONNE ANNEE! This year ' s French Club is a whirlwind of activity. Starting off with a French cooking activity, the club has put a large emphasis on French culture. They took a trip to Rahway Theater th see a production of Mollier ' s L ' Avare in early December and a few of the members went to hew York City to see the Broadway production of Les Miserables. Fundrasers this year include, Crossant and O.J. sales and a Chocolate sale. In the spirit of Foriegn Language Week, The club put up French room signs, Sold croissants, and held a button contest. The winner recieved free passage when the club planned it ' s trip N.Y.C. this spring. Despite the long absense of the club ' s advisor, Miss Carloyn Fahrmann, officers Matt Zucker, Preeti Singh, Stephanie Raulke, and Anne Holester, under the tem- porary direction of Mrs. Tedesco, have kept the club active and vivant all year! 42 SHALOM FROM THE HEBREW CLUB! The 1987-1988 Hebrew Club had an invigorating year. Officers Beth Manes and Robin Mishkin planned a trip to New York to see the acclaimed Off-Broadway presentation, A Shayna-Meklel , with Me- lissa Gilbert. The Hebrew Club also conducted several excellent discussion groups dealing with U.S. Israeli relations and the current situation in the West Bank. Our Hebrew teacher, Mrs. Eckman has also been able to teach Hebrew 3 for the first time in five years. Congratulations to Mrs. Eckman and the rest of the Hebrew Club. In the be- ginning of this school season, many of the club members took a trip to the New York City Town Hall to view a Spanish Flamenco Concert. The students then ate at the authentic Spanish restaurant Meson Botin. The club also visited Brearly High School for a performance by the Spanish musical group Las Tunas. Dayton was represented by the Spanish Club President Pamela Nadzan who acted as madrina. Pamela presented the singer with ribbons of orange and blue. The final trip for the club mem- bers who were the top candy sellers of the Spanish Club Gertrude Hawke Candy Sale was to the United Na- tions. This trip took many of the students to New York for a unique opportunity to view the inside of the CJ.N. As an addition to the club ac- tivities, the Trivia Bowl was the most exciting and successful activity of the year. The game was conducted by Senor Farrell, Senor Ortiz, and Mrs. Levy. The trivia game was spo- ken in Spanish in which two teams of twelve attempted to answer ques- tions pertaining to Spanish history, culture, vocabulary, grammar, geog- raphy, and food. Each of the twenty- four participants received Spanish notecards and an invitation to a cat- ered reception which was the grande finale of the competition. This has been one of the most entertaining and eventful years for the Dayton Spanish Club. Thanks given to Pres- ident Pamela Nadzen, Vice-President Steven Dorlen, Treasurer Mark Ben- jamin, and Secretary Dayla Rubanenko. 46 ACTORS TAKE THE STAGE BY STORM The Drama Club had a very exciting and sucessful year. This year ' s members tried out and showed their wonderful acting abilities for the school ' s play Enter Laughing and musical Once Gpon A Mattress. Many members of the club became involved in the play by either performing or helping backstage with scenery, lighting, and many other jobs. The best actors and actresses became elegible for membership in the National Thespian Society, with recommendations from Mr. Trinity, the club ' s advisor. President Robby Hilliard, Vice President Jay Jellinek, and Secretary Lauren Sueskind, wish continued success with the future Drama Clubs. With lots of hard work and long hours of it, the band once again enjoyed a successful year. Gnder the direction of Mr. Martin Friedman, the Bulldog band triumphed over obstacles of a large freshman pop- ulation and a small band front — boasting five girls — to compete in many competitions around New Jersey. For Halloween, the band got into the spirit by dressing as Bulldog football players. They also performed for the Thanksgiving Fall Festival pep rally and bonfire. Officers this year include: Robin Goodman, Drum Ma- jorette; Irina Shlafman, Guard Captain; Stephanie Ruelke, Guard Co-Captain; Suzanne Vadas and Rachel Cutler, Wind Leaders; and Tom Balke, Percussion Cap- tain. In addition, the concert band is providing the music for Dayton ' s fiftieth anniversary celebration. The band is also involved with the two junior highs, traveling to both of them to give dem- onstration performances and offering eigth grade musicians the opportunity to learn about the band by participating in the winter concert. Besides a wide selection of different types of music, the band ' s concert program also features several chamber ensembles of brass, flutes, and saxophones. In spite of its small size, Dayton ' s concert band is deter- mined to make music together. 56 JAZZ BAND GETS DOWN! This year the Dayton Jazz Band is getting down to the business of playing lots and lots of jazz. In addition to performing at the annual winter and spring concerts in the school auditorium, the jazz band is scheduled to compete in Maryland on the spring trip, as well as in several local competitions. This year the jazz band is continuing the popular tradition that began last year, by losting another jazz exposition at Dayton, featuring bands from the four regional schools and from the Manhattan School of Music. The Dayton jazz band is directed by Mr. Martin Friedman, and this year ' s soloists are Rachel Cutler, Mike Shapiro, Gwen Thompson, and Suzanne Vadas. With a full schedule of performances, the band is always kept busy playing wing, blues, and all that jazz! The 1987 DAWGS were faced with a tough task even before the season began. Any time a team must play under a new head coach, hard times could be expected. Unfortunately, such was the case for John LeDonne ' s squad this year. Yet despite playing a rugged schedule consisting of four state playoff teams, the DAWGS finished 3- 6. After opening the season with consecutive losses to Clark and Hillside, the team pulled off a major upset over Roselle. Sparked by a Jeff Stoffer touchdown run and a stunning 60 yard touchdown pass from Gregg Walsh to William Lee late in the game, the DAWGS won 15-12. The following week, in a game televised on TV-3, the team beat Berkeley Heights 20-3. Highlighting the victory was a touchdown run by Jeff Debbie along with two touchdown runs by Walsh. The Bulldogs ' final victory came against Parsippany Hills by a margin of 23-7. In the game, touchdowns were scored by Stoffer, Lee, and Walsh and Glen Miske added a field goal. In summarizing the year Co-Captain Gregg Walsh led the team with 900 total yards, while adding 4 rushing touchdowns and 2 touchdown passes. Co-Captain Jeff Stoffer led the team with 38 points, including 6 touchdowns. William Lee led the team in receiving yards while Glen Miske added 2 field goals and 10 extra points. Defensively, Danny Francis, Chris Kisch, and Walsh led the team in tackles. Other stellar contributors included linemen Mike Elson and Dave Koenigsberg as well as end John Saraka. In recognition of their fine performances, Walsh and Francis were selected First-Team All-Conference while Stoffer and Kisch received honorable mention. In addition, Walsh and Francis were named Second — Team All County, All-Metro, and All-Suburban. Walsh was also selected First Team All County Leader and 2nd Team Group-2 All State. The Dawgs won 4-2 in a tight shootout, defeating their arch rivals in the process. The season came to an end with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Millburn, in the sectional semi-finals.
