Two of the biggest and most popular fund raisers were geared to Valentine ' s Day. Students were able to send cookies to their favorite people. These cookies, distributed during 10th period, appeared to be a major fun and fund raiser. Also, a com- puter dating service was organized during Valentine ' s Day. Students filled out surveys which were then put into the computer. The lucky students were then matched with their perfect dates. Although most students were happy, some others did not approve of the computer ' s choices! Another fund raiser was the famous battle of the bands. Local groups, some with Dayton students and graduates, battled it out on the stage of Halsey Hall. The winning group was selected by the audience and an eventful night was had by all. Mrs. Cusumano, the faculty advisor, was aided this year by officers Kathy Meixner, Michelle Coddington, )im Lee and Alan Souza. STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS - President Kathy Meixner, Vice President Alan Souza, Secretary ]im Lee, Treasurer Michelle Coddington Barry and Donna wait to find out if the computer will match them up Lucky officer |im Lee is happy with the computer ' s choice 34 The National Honor Society ' s symbols. The National Honor Society consists of the academically superior students of Jonathan Dayton. Students are selected for membership on the basis of the following four criteria: Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service. Scholarship consists of maintaining an excellent grade point average. Character is in relation to a student ' s maturity level. Leadership is indicative of a student ' s ability to influence others toward a positive goal, and service represents a student ' s in- volvement in an activity(s) outside the classroom. Students must also be recommended by teachers in order to enter the group. The Dayton Key Club was again busy serving the school and surrounding community. Officers, Rochelle Smith, Pete VonDerLinn, Jay Mishkin, and Anne Marie Cochia combined both new and old projects to make 1984-85 quite a successful year. The annual bowl-a-thon to fight Leukemia was a success, while a Trivial Pursuit night challenged the minds of many students. Around Valentine ' s Day, the Key Club teamed up with the Student Council to provide Dayton with its first computer dating service. The club combatted heart disease through a radiothon with station WERA which raised over 7,000 dollars. The year culminated with the district convention held at Mount Aires Lodge in the Poconos. Through its ser- vice the Key Club not only helped its members to be better citizens but aided the school and community. This photo courtesy of GQ. The journal is con- tinually building a strong foundation for the future by teaching underclassmen to write in proper jurnalistic style. Journalism students use the paper as a medium to practice and show their reporting skills. The journal, advised by Mrs. Julia Latzer and led by editor-in-chief Kipp Levinson and Leslie Meskin, covered and presented various topics. Page editors Thea Winarsky, Pete VonDerLinn, Jay Mishkin, and Margaret Taylor assigned numerous articles. Often the pieces were entertaining, infor- mative, provocative, and even controversial. In any event, they and the rest of the hard working staff produced many fine issues which were widely read. ATTENTION ALL COMRADES OF OCEANIA! PREPARE YOURSELVES FOR A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXAL TED LEADER BIG BROTHER. Good Morning, comrades. This morning I have glorious news to report. Last night while you were sleeping our armed forces in Eastasia captured all of India! The end of the war finally seems to be within our grasp! We have taken over 35,360 In- dian prisoners, who will, of course, be on public display tomorrow for the Routine Riducuie Ritual. Oceania has suffered only 346 casualties. This is our best war effort ever! (The mandatory mourn- ing for our brave soldiers who gave their lives for the sake of Oceania will be tomorrow morning at 0900 hours.) I would also like to announce that Oceania has won the battle for production! Last year we had a surplus of 24,347 razor blades, 11,934 pairs of shoes, and 103,769 tomatoes. Therefore, the chocolate ration has been raised to two kilograms for this month You need not thank, me, com- rades, you earned it. I have a special treat for you at the public hangings this afternoon. Yesterday the Thought Police discovered the infamous Brotherhood leader Joseph Trinity directing a despicable band of young Brotherhood traitors in a dramatic pro- duction that actually has the audacity to question and demoralize the power and existence of the Party! This is an act of treachery completely un- foreseen in the history of Oceania. In compensa- tion, each traitor involved will be hanged twice this afternoon in a public square near you. That is all for now. This has been a message from our exalted leader Big Brother. Everyone back to work! We will keep you posted for any further developments. ALL HAIL BIG BROTHER! Here he ventures into the arts of note-reading, basic tonal quality, har- monic acclimation, and general rehearsal and performance techniques. After a year of such musical introduction the student may either enter the Concert Choir and continue his pursuit of vocal instruction, or audtion for the Chorale, the Competitive singing group that serves as the upper echelon of the Vocal Music Department. The Department undertakes various ac- tivities throughout the year. Students engage themselves in endless fund-raising so that they can cover the expenses of the numerous department activities such as vocal concerts, student scholarships, anc group trips. Each holiday season the Chorale and Chorale Alumni perforrr Handel ' s MESSIAH at the Presbyteriar Church in Mountainside. Faced with the problem of decreased enrollment within the band program, leadership became the major part of the success. Part of this student leadership was Senior Drum Majorette Kim Fisher, junior Drum Majorette Deneen Martino, Captain of the Guard Denise Campion and Co-Captains of percussion Stephen Agey and Larry Cohen. Soloists were Sue Miiske, Alan Talarsky, David Dietz and Mark Shanaman. Of course, with Mr. Jeffrey Anderson in charge, the band had to be good! The band traveled to various areas of New jersey and Penn- sylvania to compete and placed within the top five bands. The Band is very proud of their accomplishments and have gained respect within their communities. The Jersey Devil Indoor Guard is in action again for the eighth consecutive year! Under the instruction of Mr. Jeff Anderson and Ed Do scher, the guard has in- vited other students to par- ticipate, who are not band members. After a shaky beginning, the guard has improved greatly. Also adding excite- ment to this year ' s show, is the use of a gigantic Cen- tipede, which is also the ti- tle of their opening song. All members fit under the Cen- tipede until they suddenly appear. The Indoor Guard requires students to dance, as well as twirl to a choreo- graphed routine. Student Leadership this year involves Seniors: Denise Campion, Kim Fisher, and Beth McLaughlan, and Juniors: Lori Hagey, Kelly Stewart, and Deneen Martino. The students are required to play an instrument and practice the daily lesson. Music varies from jazz, current hits and classical. Most students improve and broaden their personal musical abilities. To be the best that they can is a definite goal. The Concert Band can be seen performing at the Winter Concert, marathon Spring Concert, and graduation. This year the Concert Band in- tends to compete for the first time during the Spring Trip. Best of luck in what they do. The high jumping team of senior Karen Wenek and junior Kathy Biber did very well. The shot putters were Lauren Arnold, Anne Marie Lissy and Lisa Gleicher. The team will depend upon a number of promising underclassmen. Highly recruited 1st baseman pitcher Dan Klinger hit .380 for the Bulldogs last year. Greg Torborg, the starting centerfielder for the team, will be counted on again this year to provide strong hitting as well as solid defense Gallaro and laione, who last year split the catching chores, will add power to the Bulldog lineup. Could there by any sport better suited to the average Daytonite? O.K., realistically there are only a select few who par- ticipate on the Dayton golf team. These fine athletes are truly privileged in more than one way. First, they are able to benefit from the good coaching and infinite ex- perience of Mr. Ray Yanchus. He has always been willing to lend his vast knowledge of the game to his players. Largely due to Coach Yan- chus, Dayton Golf has been and will be a success. Golfers at Dayton are furthur privileged as they have Baltustol, a P.G.A. championship golf course, as their home links. The fact the the course has been the sight of various professional tournaments adds extra excitement for the golfers who tackle its rolling greens and monster Par 5 ' s. The challenge of such a tough course provides the team with great experience and allows them to sharpen their skills. This gives the edge to the Bulldogs, especially at most away matches, where public golf holes often seem simple as compared to those of The Roll. Dayton Golf certainly has a strong foundation with the coaching of Mr. Yanchus. More and more students are trying for the few spots open for match play every year. It looks as if we may one day have another Jack Nicklaus as a product of Bulldog Golf. THE BULLDOG GOLF TEAM - Back Row. L to R: Adam Cohen, Tom Salibene. Doug Maher. Mike Tomko, Mitch Cohen. The team is lead by the strong distance crew that constantly wins the half mile, mile, and two mile races. Also excellent are the 100 meter, 200 meter, and 400 meter sprint teams. The team also has girls doing the 100 and 400 (intermediate) hurdle events and a weight crew that participates in the shot put, discus, and javelin throws. The Fall Festival began on Nov. 1st and ran until Thanksgiv- ing. It began with banner painting. Three fun-filled days for each class to make a banner along with decorations for their respective hallways. The hall decorating was creative and unique this year. The seniors went with the theme of J. D. Bulldog for President since this was an elec- tion year. The Juniors went with a haunted house decor, and the Sophomores with a New York City skyline. The Freshmen came up with the idea of Bulldog conquers the world. Points were awarded for ban- ners, hall decoration, support for class and court voting. The spectacular judging was done by Mr. Falzarano, Mr. Pereirra, and Ms. Romano. The climax came at the Thanksgiving Pep rally when the winner was announced. The Seniors arose the vic- tors with juniors close behind. Now it was time to party! At the Homecoming dance, the end of the festival, Kipp Levinson, and Margaret Taylor were crowned Mr. Regional and Homecoming queen. We need not worry about how to remember Kipp as we reflect upon our wild younger days of which he was such a major part. For Kipp remains more than just the fond memory of a smiling face and a quick witticism. To us, Kipp represents the unflagging heart and soul of a class, of a school, of a community. And his gift to us goes far beyond his unselfish and uncompromising companionship. He gave us happiness through laughter, life through love, sanity through insanity. A hearty chortle was the only recompense he sought — and he would travel to the deepest humility and humiliation in its quest. To you, Kipp, who shared with us our most carefree years, who helped launch us into maturity without reaping any of its benefits yourself, whom we will undeniably miss and longingly wish to be alongside us partaking in all of our future joy, we offer our most sincere efforts, combined and individual.
