As graduation approaches we reminisce about the ups and downs of high school and wonder where time has gone. Images of the dreaded first day cloud our minds but are quickly replaced by fond memories of pep rallies, football games, the senior prom and the homecoming dance. We try to forget our years of final exams but we will never forget the faculty that so enriched our lives by sharing knowledge and a part of themselves. We endured four years of worrying about our futures but have made promises to always remember special friendships. For the rest of our lives we will carry with us memories of lonathan Dayton, that red brick roller- coaster which has greatly affected our lives. JONArt DA?TON REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL ' 6 FACULTY AND CURRICULUM 17 ADMINISTRATION Mr. Manuel Pereira Big Man on Campus is definitely an ac- curate description of Dayton ' s vice-principal, Mr. Manuel Periera. Through the years, though, the students have learned not to be petrified by his imposing stature since he is a fair and understanding man. Nevertheless, few students cherish the opportunity to be sent to Periera ' s office. The Saturday school potential is often a strong deterrent to tar- diness and misbehavior. Many students have attested that Mr. Periera is actually a vv cool guy and that his punishments are fair. Miss Anne Romano This year Miss Anne Romano, our principal, celebrates her 40th year at Jonathan Dayton. Beginning as a student, returning as a teacher and finally assuming the job of principal, she stands firmly as the backbone of the high school. Her many years of service have earned her the respect of one and all. The class of 84 is grateful for her dedication, and for the faith and pride she holds in us. We are certain she will enrich the lives of many students to come. 18 BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr Stephen A Marcinak President Mr Joseph R Vaughn β President Mr John E Conlin Mr Harold E. Despite their difficult schedule they finished the year with a respectable 9-5 record and a 4th place finish in both the Union County Tournament and the Bulldog Invitational Meet. Unfortunately Linda Anagnos and Carol Carpenter, the team ' s co-captains, and senior )oanne Fusco, missed part of the season due to injuries; however, they provided the team with the leadership and enthusiasm need- ed for a successful season. The majority of the team ' s scor- ing came from the all-around per- formers, Carmela Carpenter, Gina Pashaian, and Karen Rose. EARL HENDLER Jonathan Dayton suffered a great loss when a respected member of our faculty, Mr. Earl Hendier, passed away on December 18, 1983. Mr. Hendier was born on December 17, 1917. His mother was a Hebrew teacher. Mr. Hendler ' s diverse interests developed from his love of education. Devouring knowledge, Mr. Hendier received his Bachelor ' s Degree from Rutgers and his Master ' s from Columbia. He continued his education by completing all the academic work for a PhD in English at Rutgers. El A In addition to Mr. Hendler ' s passion for teaching and his involvement with the American Federation of eachers, he had many other diverse interests. As a youngster he played in the New Jersey All State Or- chestra and carried his talent and love of the violin through his entire life. As a man he was a classical music and jazz enthusiast. Art, politics and science were Mr. Hendler ' s passions and he had quite an affinity for them. Beginning his teaching career in Newark, Mr. Hendier came to Dayton and taught Effective Writing, Shakespeare and Tragedy and English Literature. Mr. Hendier was also a published poet. Literature magazines such as The Minnesota Review, Commentary and Prairie Schooner published his works. Mr. Hendier will be remembered for his love of education and for his devotion to his students.
