The work is done during a regular class, which runs for the first semester only. The students are divided into groups and each group is given a special project. The projects consist of designing a certain number of pages, selecting and cropping the pic- tures and finally, transcribing the pages on special sheets. The projects are grad- ed o n their overall appearance and originality. This year a new face was added to the Vocal Music Department when Ms. Brenda Kay took over the job of director. She provides to the students of our school with vocal and musical in- terests, an opportunity to improve upon their skills and to develop a deeper appreciation of all types of music. The vocal department is divided into three groups: Vocal Workshop, Concert Choir, and Chorale. These groups have the op- portunity to exhibit their talents through many concerts given throughout the year. This year the Club ordered a Rugger type shirt for those members who had not received a varsity jacket. Consisting of about 25 students involved in a business course, this club helps them to learn more about the business world. Although the club hasn ' t been active enough to participate in business competitions, Mrs. Wendroff hopes this year ' s members will initiate more enthusiasm for next year ' s members. This year ' s plans include: a day trip to a business company, to see what is expected of you in the business world; a cookie sale, to raise money for the treasury; and in honor of secretary ' s day, refreshments for all secretaries of the school; and much more. The Fall Festival this year really exemplified the school spirit of the freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The Halloween Pep Rally kicked off the Fall Festival, where each class was judged on their spirit and enthusiasm. Next came the banner painting contest, in which the sophomores won. Highlighting the Fall Festival was the hall decorating contest, whereby the seniors showed the most talent and creativity and took first place. Following this exciting week was the annual Homecoming Dance which was held on November 19th. The finalists were introduced early in the evening and at 10:30 p.m. the winners were announced. Kyle Hudgins was crowned Mr. Regional, while the other Mr. Regional finalists were Pat Esemplare, Joe Roessner, Ron Fusco, Henry Largey, and Dan Connolly. The Homecoming Queen finalists included Karen Flynn, Barbara Petitti, Yael Rubanenko, Terri Scelfo, and Linda Seymour. Joanne Ellenberger was crowned Homecoming Queen and her court was Karen Apicella (84), Carmella Carpenter (85), Joanne Centimore (86), and not to forget the senior court jester, Charlie Colline. The following Wednesday, November 24, Dayton ' s annual Thanksgiving Day Pep Rally took place. Each class was allowed five minutes to present a skit. Once again the students showed their enthusiasm and school spirit. Unfortunately there can only be one winner and the fall competition ended with the seniors in first place. Miss Duke and her cheerleaders spent many hours organizing and preparing for this fall competition. All their hard work and effort paid off as the Fall Festival was enjoyed by all. This year the girls tennis team had a successful season, with a 13-7 record and placing third in the county tournament. The team had a very strong starting line-up with freshman Liz Schramm, who led the team with very strong play. Also, Junior Linda Hockstein at second singles had an excellent season being undefeated in dual match play. Linda and Liz both placed second in the Union County Tour- nament. The remaining line-up consisted of Alison Keehn at third singles who later rotated with Barbara Petitti at first doubles. Junior Janie Ginsberg held down the other first doubles spot with consistent play. A rotating system was used for se- cond doubles this year with Alisa Seigal, Vicki Anderson, and Sharon Kutsop. Cheerleading not only consists of cheering, but also the attempt of bringing high spirit into the halls of J.D.R.H.S. It all began with the long hard practices and preparation for the spirit building activities. With the help of our advisors, Miss Linda Duke, Miss Sandy Earl, and Miss Vicky Novak, the fall festival was once again a success. Cheerleading became a six day a week activity. Before the season started no one relaized how much time and dedication were needed to keep the spirit alive. We all anxiously awaited the Thanksgiving day game, despite the fact that it would end the fall season, and for the seniors it would end their football, soccer, and cheerleading experiences. Unlike previous seasons the team consisted of eleven squad members and seven alternates. Also with a cut across the board, a number of games were eliminated, easing the hectic sports schedule. Instead of cheering six nights per week, the cheerleaders cheered three nights per week and an occasional Saturday game. The secret success of the 1982 Winter season was a close knit bond that has formed between squad members. Through hard work and dedication the cheerleaders have excelled in their strengths and con- quered their weaknesses. The moments were temporary but the memories will last forever . . . The team is led by Dan Freedman, who is returning after a fabulous season last year. Coach Swedish began the season in an optimistic fashion because of the number of experienced bowlers who have returned. The team hopes to be a contender in the Union County Tournament with aspirations of get- ting a Lite Beer commercial. Still arising around 5 a.m. each day, both teams travel to the Union Boy ' s Club for long workouts, returning just in time to start school. Cinder the direction of head coach Howard Cushnir, the team members made up for their lack of experience through their determina- tion. Captains Lisa Jackson, Dominick Giovannone, and John Alder guided the teams to a respectable season. The key to success for Dayton swimmers has been a total commitment by senior swim- mers as well as several promising underclassmen. First Row: David Luckenbach, Dominick Giovannone, John Alder. 2nd Row: Ann Rybicki (mgr), John Fischer, Hal Levine, Wayne Hattenbach, George Markos, John Simon, Karen Flynn (mgr). 3rd Row: Peter Jaffe, Bob Alder, Bill Cieri, John Seaman. 1st Row: Ann Rybicki, Karen Flynn (managers), Lisa Jackson, Carol Heymann, Maureen Barisonek, Fran Boraczek. 2nd Row: Liz Tromp, Noreen Rothfuss, Racheal Gural, Jill Sciocia, Donna Keller, Mindy Zitomer. 98 GIRLS ' SOFTBALL The 1983 Girls ' Softball Team, led by Coach Howard Cushnir, had a strong team this year because of the dynamic returning players. Other upcom- ing players include Matt Dooley, Drew Greeley, Tony Millin, and Gary Schlager who will also help with this years ' season. Despite last years over-whelming success Coach Cowden looks forward to much im- pressive play along with many victories. Mike Berliner takes time out for a joke. A smashing serve by Kip Levinson. Pete Sommer ready for action. 101 UP AT BAT! Coming off a very successful 14-8 season, Coach Robert Lowe is very hopeful about the 1983 season. Solid team unity is the team ' s strong point along with a great desire and attitude. Returning letter- man, Torborg, Policastro, Fusco, Roessner and Esemplare should form a good nucleus and lead the team throughout the season. Good pitching, solid defense and a fine team attitude should make up for the lack of solid hitting. If the 1983 Baseball Bulldogs get off to a good start, experience and confidence will come quickly and it could be a very successful and rewarding season.
